In this paper we present a general formulation that unifies the probabilistic characterisation of Hermitian random matrices with a specific structure. Based on a unified expression for the joint pdf, we obtain (i) the joint cdf, (ii) the marginal cdf's, and (iii) the marginal pdf's of the ordered eigenvalues, where (ii) and (iii) follow as simple particularizations of (i). Our formulation is shown to include the distribution of some common MIMO channel models such as the uncorrelated and semicorrelated Rayleigh, and the uncorrelated Rician fading MIMO channel, although it is not restricted only to these. Hence, we provide a solid framework for the simultaneous analytical performance analysis of MIMO systems under different channel models. As an example of application, we obtain the exact outage probability of a spatial multiplexing MIMO system transmitting through the strongest channel eigenmodes.

In this paper, we propose a novel architecture of photo core transform (PCT) which is used as transformation of image data into frequency domain in HD Photo, an emerging image coding system developed by Microsoft. In order to support various memory bus bandwidths used in system-on-a-chip (SoC) design, an implementation for each bandwidth can be derived based on our architecture. In addition, in order to reduce the local memory size and the traffic between the main and local memories, we propose a novel data transfer and storing scheme for PCT. The experimental results show that hardware modules corresponding to the given bus bandwidths can be reasonably derived from the proposed architecture.

This paper deals with an optical switching problem concerning an architecture represented by input-output request matrix. New algorithms such as LS, Q-family and J-family are presented and thoroughly studied. J-family algorithms are some modifications of the well known Double algorithm. The study focuses on comparison between the considered algorithms and known algorithms such as Double and Exact. The local comparison criteria consist of the number of decomposed matrices, the number of empty slots, the total time of decomposition and excess. As the global index of performance the weighted penalty is introduced, which comprises local criteria. The properties of the proposed algorithms are shown on examples, where matrices with various elements are decomposed into permutation matrices (switch configurations). An idea of experimentation system and some results of investigations are presented. The properties of the considered algorithms are discussed, especially significant results for LS algorithm are described.

This paper deals with the joint estimation of time-delay and spatial (direction-of-arrival, DOA) parameters of several replicas of a known signal in an unknown spatially correlated field. Unstructured and structured models have been proposed for maximum likelihood (ML) estimators in the literature. The former suffers from a severe performance degradation in some scenarios, whereas the latter involves huge complexity. It is shown how the extended invariance principle (EXIP) can be applied to obtain estimates with the quality of those of the structured model, but with the complexity of the unstructured one. We present a method to improve the quality of the time-delay estimates obtained with an unstructured spatial model when an estimate of the DOAs is available. Exemplarily, simulation results for time-delay estimation for GPS (Global Positioning System) are included and confirm that our proposal approaches the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of the structured model even when suboptimal DOA estimates obtained by ESPRIT are introduced.

Rain attenuation characteristics of up- and down-link radio waves of Ku-band satellite communications in both Japan and Indonesia are presented for the past three years of 2003-2005, using Japan fs domestic communication satellite Superbird C (14°4 E in orbit) that connects Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere of Kyoto university (RISH) to Equatorial Atmosphere Radar Observatory (EAR;0.2° S, 100.3° E). The yearly cumulative time percentages of the observed rain attenuation are in good agreement with the ITU-R (International Telecommunication Union. Radiocommunication Sector) predictions for both locations in Japan and Indonesia. At EAR in Indonesia, however, the time percentages of both up- and down-link attenuation become much smaller than the ITU-R predictions in the range of larger than 10 dB. This indicates the reduction of equivalent path length down to about 2 km, as also revealed by the X-band radar observations along the same propagating path. This equivalent path length seems rather short compared with those obtained in other tropical observation sites, being attributed to unique features of the EAR site that is located in a highland basin and has a comparatively low elevation angle of 39°even in the tropics.
