Automatic reading comprehension (RC) systems can analyze a given passage and generate/extract answers in response to questions about the passage. The RC passages are often constrained in their lengths and the target answer sentence usually occurs very few times. In order to generate/extract a specific precise answer, this paper proposes the integration of two types of "deep" linguistic features, namely word dependencies and grammatical relations, in a maximum entropy (ME) framework to handle the RC task. The proposed approach achieves 44.7% and 73.2% HumSent accuracy on the Remedia and ChungHwa corpora respectively. This result is competitive with other results reported thus far. © 2006 Association for Computational Linguistics

A new low-dimensional feature representation technique is presented in this paper. Linear discriminant analysis is a popular feature extraction method. However, in the case of high dimensional data, the computational difficulty and the small sample size problem are often encountered. In order to solve these problems, we propose two dimensional direct LDA algorithm named 2D-DLDA, which directly extracts the image scatter matrix from 2D image and uses direct LDA algorithm for face recognition. The ORL face database is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results indicate that the performance of the proposed method is superior to DLDA

Two versions of a preconditioning procedure are described for a class of two-dimensional scattering problems, when the latter are solved via the Method of Auxiliary Sources (MAS). The method is useful for the case of shrinking auxiliary surfaces, i.e. when the linear system may become ill-conditioned. If the cross sectional boundary can be regarded as a deformation of a circle, the MAS matrix is shown to be quasi-circulant, as expected intuitively. By utilizing the circulant properties of the matrix pertaining to the original circular configuration, the perturbed system is transformed to a quasi-diagonal one, whose inversion is a numerically stable operation.

Embedded digital signal processors for software defined radio have stringent design constraints including high computational bandwidth, low power consumption, and low interrupt latency. Furthermore, due to rapidly evolving communication standards with increasing code complexity, these processors must be compiler-friendly, so that code for them can quickly be developed in a high-level language. In this paper, we present the design of the Sandblaster Processor, a low-power multithreaded digital signal processor for software defined radio. The processor uses a unique combination of token triggered threading, powerful compound instructions, and SIMD vector operations to provide real-time baseband processing capabilities with very low power consumption. We describe the processor's architecture and microarchitecture, along with various techniques for achieving high performance and low power dissipation. We also describe the processor's programming environment and the SB3010 platform, a complete system-on-chip solution for software defined radio. Using a super-computer class vectorizing compiler, the SB3010 achieves real-time performance in software on a variety of communication protocols including 802.11b, GPS, AM/FM radio, Bluetooth, GPRS, and WCDMA. In addition to providing a programmable platform for SDR, the processor also provides efficient support for a wide variety of digital signal processing and multimedia applications. © 2006 Springer Science + Business Media, LLC.

In this work, we present an event-based simulator for wireless networks using the Java programming language. Special focus has been placed on scalability and modularity of the implementation. Indeed, the new test-bed can support easily up to 10000 nodes;at the same time the different components interact with each other with well-defined interfaces permitting separate and independent modification. Even though the simulator can be used for any ad hoc wireless network, we have concentrated on the more energy-limited and constrained sensor networks. The supported physical model includes the use of directional antennas, enabling the switching of the antennas' lobe at will and the finding of direction of arrival (DoA) of the signal. Two variants of Aloha and one CSMA are the major MAC protocols implemented. At the network layer, emphasis was given on SPEED [1] and its enhancements. Finally, the user is provided with a configuration file to set its inputs, an excel output file holding all the statistics of the simulation and an interactive GUI showing the flow of information across the sensor nodes. Finally, the simulator was tested in terms of speed and memory demands, and the results of our simulations were compared against those of other research groups.

A new fast time synchronization technique is proposed for DVB-H receiver in this paper. Only one DVB-H OFDM symbol is needed to achieve accurate time synchronization by using the correlation function of the received signal and four timedomain local references generated from the DVB-H scattered pilots. The computation complexity of the new algorithm is further reduced by limiting the range of correlation function, which is realized by exploiting the cyclic property of the OFDIVI signal. © 2006 IEEE.

In survivable wavelength-division multilplexing (WDM) networks, when a link failure occurs, the upstream node of this link creates a protection-switching procedure such that traffic through this link is rerouted by way of multi-backup paths. In this paper, for the first time, we employ the concept of bifurcation, that is, the use of multiple disjoint backup paths to protect a single link failure to achieve load balancing and enhance survivability. We extend the Lagrangean relaxation scheme proposed in [1] and propose a bifurcate method based on the protected working capacity envelope (PWCE) concept for link protection in WDM networks. This strategy simultaneously addresses the problems of routing working traffic and of determining multi-backup paths for each single link failure. From the computational experiments, the solution quality of our proposed bifurcate approach is superior to the non-bifurcate heuristic. Numerical results demonstrate that the bifurcate approach outperforms the single-link protection approach in accuracy in all traffic distribution, particularly for networks with non-uniform demand distribution.

Ferroelectric materials have been gaining much interest over the last decades due to the unique operational characteristics they demonstrate, when a dc electric field is applied. This paper investigates the scattering analysis of electromagnetic waves from materials with high permittivity that follows a linear spatial variation along one axis. The Surface Integral Equation (SIE) and Volume Integral Equation (VIE) methods are invoked to compute the currents and the radar cross section (RCS). The number of unknowns for the VIE is, as expected, larger than for the SIE method. The RCS and the induced current are associated in such a way that one can approximate the linear variation with relatively few elements (unknowns).

In this paper we report the effects on both forward current and light output in ultraviolet (UV) III-nitride light emitting diodes (LEDs) optically pumped with mid-IR radiation. Furthermore, we demonstrate an enhanced UV light emission in the ultraviolet LEDs optically pumped at low bias in the mid-IR range, and we investigate their emission, and optoelectronic behavior at low temperature. © 2005 The Electrochemical Society.
