In the process industry, engineering functions for the administration and optimization of devices are gaining importance in comparison with process control functions. Thus, the term 'asset optimization' is often used to describe techniques that exploit the full potential of plant assets. This applies in particular to field devices used in production processes. This paper presents the asset management box (AMBOX) which is an open, configuration-free and manufacturer-independent access to field device functionality for the Profibus-PA Fieldbus, creating an additional information channel between field and plant control level.

The degree of machine automation is continuously increasing, because computer technology, control software, telecommunication technology and visualization systems are also continuously improved. This makes the use of new multimedia techniques for reading, communication and presentation of machine or process data possible, even over far distances. Multimedia communication is becoming a technology of growing importance for user interfaces in automation and process control. Think of acoustic and visual data obtained from microphones or cameras applied to a certain automated system. They can be simply used and understood as a new brand of sensors or actuators that are part of a process control unit. Supervising and monitoring of certain process states is simplified, if the operator can "see" and "hear" the real process. Technical aspects concerning types, quality and speed of multimedia data communication will be discussed and especially viewed for an implementation in automated systems. © 2002 IEEE.

Developing a treatment of neurologic Lower Urinary Tract (LUT) dysfunction which is a disease that affects the LUT function has received a special attention by the medical society. Among other treatment approaches, open loop electrical-stimulatory therapies have been widely used for treating patients with LUT dysfunction. This paper introduces a new close-loop controller using Model Predictive control (MPC) to treat this disease. A nonlinear LUT model has been developed and Recursive Least Square (RLS) has been used to develop linearized models covering the whole operating region; representing the nonlinear dynamics of the LUT. The proposed technique has a switching mechanism that allows the exploration of three different sub-models that represent the interaction between different operating ranges in the LUT model. The proposed controller shows a significant ability in controlling the micturition process and bringing the bladder behavior to its normal function pattern. The obtained results demonstrate the controller robustness to system uncertainties. © 2017

control systems that prevent the development of riser slugging in pipeline-riser systems have in recent years been introduced on several offshore processing facilities. These control systems are based on active use of the topside choke valve to keep a pressure measured somewhere upstream of the riser constant. These control systems have been a great success, and are emerging as the standard method to avoid riser slugging in multiphase production pipelines. The active use of the topside choke valve for control purposes opens the door for several other interesting applications as there are other multiphase phenomena occurring in a pipeline-riser system that can cause operational problems for the downstream production facilities. Among these are surge waves. When the production rate in a gas-condensate pipeline is increased, the liquid holdup in the pipeline will go down. This means that during the transition period, an excess amount of liquid needs to be transported out of the pipeline before a new steady state can be reached. The excess liquid can cause the liquid rate out of the pipeline to exceed the liquid handling capacity of the receiving facilities. Start-up slugs occur when the pipeline is started up from shut-in conditions. These slugs are similar to surge waves as they are caused by an increase in the production rate. However, start-up slugs can be even more violent as they potentially can initiate riser slugs and thereby cause even larger peaks in the liquid production. In this paper we introduce a novel control structure that extends the scope of pipeline control by including suppression of surge waves and start-up slugs. The control system consists of a slug controller and individual flow controllers for each phase combined seamlessly through a minimum select function. The performance of the control system is illustrated with simulations from an industrial case study. © BHR Group 2005 Multiphase Production Technology 12.

An approximation procedure is presented for a class of hybrid systems in which switching occurs only when the continuous state trajectory crosses thresholds defined by a rectangular partitioning of the state space. The result of the approximation are rectangular automata, a class of hybrid automata for which a numerically robust approximative analysis algorithm exists. Thus, the approximation procedure can be applied when we are interested in the reachability set of a switched continuous system for which a direct analysis is infeasible. The approach is illustrated by application to a simple physical example. As an extension, an algorithm is presented to adjust the accuracy of the approximation to the continuous dynamics by choosing a state space partitioning according to the variation of the vector field. © 1999 EUCA.

Energy management system (EMS) is important for the planning and operation of power system as the power generation must supply enough energy for load with the minimum operating cost. This paper presents nonlinear MPC to dispatch power generation within the limitation of the power system. The objectives are to improve EMS by considering AC optimal power flow and provide a dispatch strategy to reduce total operating cost (TOC). To realize the proposed nonlinear MPC, we consider the power plant model of Mae Hong Son in the northern part of Thailand. Load data and power generation profile are utilized as the inputs to MPC of EMS to minimize TOC for one day ahead. In this work, the optimal power flow is incorporated as the second order cone constraints. It is shown that EMS with optimal power flow can operate within the rated voltage for all buses. When comparing the results in normal mode with one-shot optimization, the proposed MPC can reduce the TOC by 1.72% in the rainy season. © 2021 IEEE.

The use of multimedia techniques for reading, communication and presentation of machine was discussed. The virtual and augmented reality system, was used to achieve intuitive process control and improve operator skills which leads to new paradigm of human computer interaction. The operator can interact with the artificial part of the augmented reality if he wears sensors equipped data gloves. The most sophisticated approach utilizes intelligent communication agent which can interpret and understand time correlated input modalities and able to learn and recognize user interactive strategies and by that modify the basic user model. It is observed that multimedia based control system have importance in automated production and manufacturing industries.

This brief note considers the problem of stabilizing a first-order plant with dead-time using a fractional order Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PIDα) controller. Fractional order controller provides good stability margin than the conventional PID controller. Here, the upper bound of Kd value is estimated first for all permissible value of α which is followed by computing the value of Kc. Further, the graphic results have been provided to clearly show the range of stabilizing PID α parameters [α, Kc, Ki and K d]. An example illustrates the applicability of the procedure. © 2009 IEEE.
