Examination of an independently actuated multi-air pad mattress for preventing pressure ulcers

This study examined the structure of an independently actuated multi-air pad mattress for preventing pressure ulcers, owing to lower body pressure, in specific locations of the body where pressure sores can occur. The contributions of this study are as follows: 1) The parameters were derived and simulations were performed to design air pad units of different sizes with similar heights. 2) The mattress was manufactured by examining the bending of the folding bed, with 36 air pads and three different sizes. 3) Each air pad was independently controlled to inflate, contract, and retain to reduce the pressure on specific body positions. 4) Finally, using the fabricated prototype, the proposed designs were experimentally verified. © ICROS 2021.

robots with machine learning are expanding their application fields, such as serving robots and guiding robots, but applying machine learning to robots has a high labor cost due to human intervention. This paper proposes interactive robot-robot reinforcement learning technology to minimize human intervention in learning tasks that successfully balance objects between two robots. In this proposed technique, the teacher and student robot guide and learn object balancing based on reinforcement learning. Teacher robot teaches knowledge that has not been learned in advance to student robot, and teaches more effectively by providing various positive and negative text feedback on the training results. In virtual simulations, the training results of the student robot converge to the optimal policy as an evaluation result of the proposed method, and the trained student robot performs appropriate actions according to various table states by the teacher’s random action. Through our experimental results, the application possibility of robot-robot learning is verified being as good as human-robot learning. Our proposed method could be utilized to seamlessly transfer the learned knowledge when it is challenging to apply the learning model to a heterogeneous robot or an agent in an IoT environment.

In agriculture, vegetable farming is the most dominating type of farming as it contributes 2.45% to the African GDP growth. It is central to fostering growth reducing poverty and improving food security in south Africa. With more than 70% of rural population depending on agriculture for their livelihoods. However, farmers are facing ongoing challenges over monitoring of farm produce that requires extensive physical interaction within the farm activities. Another challenge, theft and killing cases are increasing in the farming sector due to poor security system involved. The current study proposes the use of GSM sim800 module to communicate with the user. Inconsistent power supply and high energy has greatly affected the agricultural sector. In this paper a cheaper prototype that uses an Arduino microcontroller to control and monitor irrigation by eliminating water waste, and provide maximum security is proposed, it is remotely controlled.

Recently, the PV(Photovoltaic) penetration has increased rapidly in Republic of Korea. And quite a lot of PV systems has been installed in small capacity. And the PV systems have difficult to have its own maintenance planning system due to difficulties in securing economic feasibility. Therefore the maintenance planning method for PV systems that can be generally applied are attracting considerable. Although the age replacement policy, one of the traditional RCM(Reliability Centered Maintenance) methodology, is excellent for determining the replacement cycle of facilities. But It evaluates that the facilities as good as new after maintenance. In this paper, the maintenance planning method for PV system facilities based on RCM has been proposed. To evaluate the failure rate after the imperfective maintenance, hybrid model has been applied. In addition, the economic feasibility of maintenance has been compared by considering investment cost and loss of the implementation for preventive maintenance policy. The aim of this article is to study the effects of Low Code Development Platforms (LCDPs) on contemporary software engineering practices, focusing on the acceleration of application development procedures, reduction of development costs, and democratization of application development. Low-code platforms use visual development environments to allow professional developers and "citizen developers" to build applications with very little coding. The benefits and challenges of LCDPs are highlighted in this research through a review of literature, case studies, and survey analysis. LCDPs can significantly enhance efficiency and reduce costs, achieving up to a 50% reduction in development time for smaller projects. However, their effectiveness diminishes in larger projects where extensive customization and integration are required. Survey results indicate that 85% of professionals agree on efficiency improvements, but challenges related to scalability and integration remain a concern. Moreover, both PSO and NLP optimize feature selection and workflow allocation, further reducing execution time by 16.8%. This provides practical implications and demonstrates the potential of LCDPs in their role in software development going forward. Copyright The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.

Leukemia is a severe form of blood cancer that presents significant challenges in both diagnosis and treatment. Early and accurate detection is crucial for successful patient outcomes, but traditional diagnostic methods relying on pathologist expertise can be subjective and time-consuming. This can lead to delays in identifying the appropriate treatment plan, especially given the complexity of accurately categorizing leukemia subtypes. To address these challenges, a study has been conducted to comprehensively evaluate Deep Learning (DL) techniques for leukemia classification. The study compares the performance of conventional Machine Learning (ML) methods with cutting-edge Transfer Learning (TL) models across multiclass scenarios. The study employed Laplacian of Gaussian-based Modified High-boosting (LoGMH) for image enhancement, along with image augmentation techniques such as brightness and rotation adjustments to expand the dataset. Additionally, feature extraction using the gray-level run length matrix (GLRLM) was applied to improve feature representation. Among the models tested, Inception-ResNet emerged as the top performer, achieving an accuracy of 95.52% and an F1 score of 95.49% in distinguishing five leukemia subtypes. This research underscores the potential of TL models in advancing medical diagnostics, particularly in the early detection and precise classification of leukemia, thereby enhancing patient care in hematology and oncology. The future research will focus on integrating additional clinical data, validating models in diverse clinical environments, and emphasizing model transparency and interpretability. © 2024 IEEE.

Unloading boxes from a container is daily operation in tobacco logistics warehouse which requires intensive manual labors. However, there are no existing proposals characteristic of versatile modules targeted for more general unloading scenarios. We present, in this paper, a more universal robotic manipulation system which can efficiently unload cardboard boxes from containers to subsequent storing cells. There are two novel contributions of our system. On one hand, we proposed an efficient restricted spatial perception framework which can precisely perceive, separate, and locate cartons randomly placed inside a container. A rotatable dual-camera setup provides a wide enough view window which assures our system could adapt to various containers of different internal dimensions. On the other hand, we designed a smart gripper with dual functionalities which can grasp a single or multiple cartons based on a novel reasoning and decision-making strategy. We deployed our system in a tobacco dock and carried out unloading tasks of more than 8000 cartons with no-prior unloading pattern, experiments not only indicated that our perception module could handle real-world scene in a precise way, but also showed a good result of grasping efficiency of more than 800 cases per hour.

In this paper, the matters to be considered by the regenerative inverter according to the low or high-voltage connection plan of the railway were analyzed to utilize the regenerative energy generated by the urban railway DC traction system. Criteria for various considerations such as energy flow, voltage fluctuations, and power quality of regenerative energy were presented when connecting the railway traction system. Power analysis simulations were used to analyze whether criteria were satisfied. The power analysis program PSCAD/EMTDC confirmed that the criteria were satisfied below the international standard IEEE-519 according to the low-voltage and high-voltage connection method. This paper is a research paper on the performance analysis of magnetic gear integrated permanent magnet motor for electric railways considering gear characteristics. In the current industry, the drive system consists of mechanical gear and motor, which reduce or decrease the mechanical output speed of the motor by slowing down the mechanical output speed of the motor. However, mechanical gear have disadvantages such as maintenance costs and noise and vibration due to the wear of contact teeth, and the combined mechanical gear and motor driving systems are very complex in structure. Furthermore, research on contactless magnetic gear is actively underway to compensate for the shortcomings of these mechanical gear, but the driving system still has a complex structure with gear and motor coupling. Therefore, these driving systems need to be simplified, and in high-capacity driving systems, such as commercial and railway vehicles, which require high-torque at low speeds, mechanical gear and motor are integrated and lightweight. In this paper, we propose a magnetic gear integrated permanent magnet motor that can be structurally simplified and lightweight compared to conventional driving systems, and performance analysis on magnetic gear integrated permanent magnet motor considering gear characteristics. In conclusion, we propose a model of a magnetic gear integrated permanent magnet motor with high performance characteristics. © Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers

This study proposed the design of a prosthetic finger that can perform functions, such as motion and gripping, without patients (with amputated fingers) needing an additional actuator. The contributions and contents of this study are as follows: First, the structure of a prosthetic finger, which could be operated by the patient’s own volition without an external actuator, was introduced. Second, the mathematical relationship for effectively designing the proposed structure was explained. In addition, by using this mathematical relationship, the trend of the fingertip trajectory, according to the link length and angle (the design variables) was analyzed. Through this analysis, an optimal design was achieved to determine the link length at which the root mean square error with the target trajectory was minimized. Third, a design method reflecting the finger size and anatomical structure was proposed. Finally, using the fabricated prototype, the proposed design was tested, and the prosthetic finger, having free motion and the ability to grip objects of various sizes, was experimentally verified. © ICROS 2021.
