It is essential to have an accurate prediction of students' future performance in order to properly carry out the necessary pedagogical interventions that are required to assure students will graduate on time and with an acceptable degree. Even though there is a wealth of research on the topic of predicting student performance when it comes to finding solutions to problems or preparing for classes by utilizing datadriven methods, the topic of predicting student performance when it comes to completing degrees (for example, college programs) is much less researched and faces new challenges, there is a large amount of diversity among students in terms of their prior experiences and the courses they choose to take. The students' developing progress should be factored into the prediction. This study proposes a unique machine learning technique for forecasting student success in degree programs. This method may handle these important issues, and it is one of the main contributions of this research. The suggested technique is distinguished primarily by its two components. To begin, a structure with two layers, a bi-layered structure, is constructed for the purpose of creating predictions based on the changing performance states of students. Then, a strategy that is driven by data and is based on latent component models and Ensemble Progressive Prediction (EPP) based matrix factorization is suggested for the purpose of determining the relevance of the course, which is essential for the construction of effective base predictors. The proposed strategy achieves better performance than benchmark methods by conducting extensive simulations using a dataset of UCLA undergraduate student data that was gathered over the course of three years. © 2023 IEEE.

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) that can dynamically control the phase of radio waves and reflect them are attracting attention to realize non line-of-sight communication in the high-frequency band. Channel state information (CSI) is estimated to properly control the phase, however the overhead of the estimation reduces communication efficiency. To reduce the overhead, IRS systems with active elements that perform channel estimation are considered. One approach treats the partial CSI obtained from the active elements as an image and utilizes a super-resolution technique to predict the entire CSI. However, because the active elements are arranged in grid, prediction is difficult when the active elements spacing and the CSI fluctuation period match. In this study, we propose a new arrangement that gathers the active elements in the center of the IRS. Furthermore, we regard prediction as an image-inpainting problem that recovers missing pixels from known pixel values, and we propose applying the U-Net to solve this problem. Numerical experiments show that the proposed method outperforms conventional methods in prediction accuracy and spectral efficiency. © 2024 IEEE.

Amplification by subsampling is one of the main primitives in machine learning with differential privacy (DP): Training a model on random batches instead of complete datasets results in stronger privacy. This is traditionally formalized via mechanism-agnostic subsampling guarantees that express the privacy parameters of a subsampled mechanism as a function of the original mechanism's privacy parameters. We propose the first general framework for deriving mechanism-specific guarantees, which leverage additional information beyond these parameters to more tightly characterize the subsampled mechanism's privacy. Such guarantees are of particular importance for privacy accounting, i.e., tracking privacy over multiple iterations. Overall, our framework based on conditional optimal transport lets us derive existing and novel guarantees for approximate DP, accounting with Rényi DP, and accounting with dominating pairs in a unified, principled manner. As an application, we analyze how subsampling affects the privacy of groups of multiple users. Our tight mechanism-specific bounds outperform tight mechanism-agnostic bounds and classic group privacy results. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. All rights reserved.

The rapid development of computer vision and machine learning in recent years has led to fruitful accomplishments in a variety of tasks, including the classification of objects, the identification of actions, and the recognition of faces, among other things. Nevertheless, identifying human emotions remains one of the most difficult tasks to do. To find a solution to this issue, a significant amount of work has been put in. In order to achieve higher accuracy in this reactivity towards a variety of speeches and vocal -based methods, computer intelligence, natural language modelling systems, and other similar technologies have been used. The examination of the emotions has the potential to be useful in a number of different settings. Cooperation with human computers is one example of such a field. computers can help customers recognize emotions, make wiser decisions, and create more lifelike human-robot interactions. In recent times, there has been a lot of focus placed on the ability to forecast dynamic facial emotion expressions in videos. Therefore, this work proposes a deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) model for emotion prediction from speech samples, facial expression images, and videos with enhanced prediction accuracy and reduced loss. In addition, the speech CNN model also utilizes mel-frequency Cepstrum coefficients (MFCC) as feature extraction from given speech samples. The proposed MFCC-CNN model resulted in superior performance than traditional models. © 2023 IEEE.

The aim of this study is to develop an automatic system that uses deep learning techniques to detect cervical spine fractures from medical images. Using a DICOM (Digital imaging and communications in medicine) images of cervical spine, the system can identify a fracture and specify which vertebrae has a fracture. This process involves first processing provided DICOM images, then applying data augmentation techniques including metadata information, finally designing neural network architecture for feature extraction. We use a method called transfer learning, utilizing a pre-trained model like EfficientNet, which is used for feature extraction, while optimizing network parameters using AdanW optimizer and CosineAnnealingWarmup learning rate scheduler. The results demonstrate the successful training of neural network models to identify fracture and that fractured vertebrae, with commendable performance and accuracy level noted during evaluation on validation data. This study has important implications for medical imaging and healthcare industries, since automated fracture detection can increase diagnostic efficiency and accuracy. Moreover, such a system would provide good support to healthcare professionals, specifically radiologists, to identify cervical spine fracture easily. © 2024 IEEE.

Honeybees are vital for pollination and food production. Among many factors, extreme temperature (e.g., due to climate change) is particularly dangerous for bee health. Anticipating such extremities would allow beekeepers to take early preventive action. Thus, given sensor (temperature) time series data from beehives, how can we find patterns and do forecasting? Forecasting is crucial as it helps spot unexpected behavior and thus issue warnings to the beekeepers. In that case, what are the right models for forecasting? ARIMA, RNNs, or something else? We propose the EBV (Electronic Bee-Veterinarian) method, which has the following desirable properties: (i) principled: it is based on a) diffusion equations from physics and b) control theory for feedback-loop controllers;(ii) effective: it works well on multiple, real-world time sequences, (iii) explainable: it needs only a handful of parameters (e.g., bee strength) that beekeepers can easily understand and trust, and (iv) scalable: it performs linearly in time. We applied our method to multiple real-world time sequences, and found that it yields accurate forecasting (up to 49% improvement in RMSE compared to baselines), and segmentation. Specifically, discontinuities detected by EBV mostly coincide with domain expert's opinions, showcasing our approach's potential and practical feasibility. Moreover, EBV is scalable and fast, taking about 20 minutes on a stock laptop for reconstructing two months of sensor data. Copyright © 2024 by SIAM.

Floods occur when water overflows onto normally dry land and are a destructive natural disaster. In recent times, deep learning models have demonstrated their remarkable capabilities in identifying objects and classifying images. As a result, the utilization of deep learning in remote sensing, especially for the crucial task of flood detection, has become an increasingly prominent and promising area of research and application. This study proposes a lightweight yet powerful feature extraction framework by leveraging a self-attention(SA) based EfficientNetV2. The EfficientNetV2 architecture serves as the backbone of the model and has exhibited effectiveness in image classification tasks. By incorporating self-attention mechanisms, the model can capture spatial relationships within remote sensing images, enhancing its accuracy and efficiency in flood detection. The model was trained and assessed using the SEN12-FLOOD dataset, and the outcomes demonstrate that the suggested framework exhibits enhanced flood detection performance, achieving an accuracy of 95.9%. © 2023 IEEE.

This review encapsulates the comprehensive exploration of LV myocardium analysis, Myocardium segmentation techniques, ranging from traditional methods to contemporary machine learning-driven approaches, are scrutinized for their accuracy and efficiency. The detection and characterization of myocardial fibrosis, crucial in diagnosing various cardiac conditions, are dissected through cutting-edge CMR techniques such as Late Gadolinium Enhancement (LGE) imaging and quantitative mapping methods. Additionally, advanced methods of wall motion estimation, including feature tracking and strain imaging, highlighting their applications in assessing myocardial function. Real-world clinical scenarios underscore the transformation impact of these techniques on diagnosing heart diseases, guiding treatment decisions, and improving patient outcomes. This paper investigates the impact of early reviews on product sales by analyzing the traits of initial reviewers on major e-commerce platforms. It segments product life-cycles into three phases: early, majority, and laggards, focusing on early reviewers who post reviews during the initial stages. The paper introduces an innovative interface for sentiment analysis to identify and predict early reviewers. Quantitative analysis reveals that early reviewers often provide more insightful comments and give higher overall ratings. Their ratings and helpfulness scores significantly affect product popularity. The methodology, tested on extensive datasets from Amazon and Yelp, extracts crucial attributes of early reviewers, including purchasing patterns and social impact. The interface employs a hybrid machine learning approach combining Naive Bayes, margin-based embedding ranking models (MERM), and support vector machines (SVMs) to predict potential early reviewers accurately. This approach balances probabilistic reasoning with robust classification, ensuring comprehensive forecasting. Evaluation metrics such as precision and accuracy demonstrate the effectiveness of the models over baseline methods. Furthermore, the study enhances the understanding of how early reviews influence consumer behavior and product success in e-commerce. The interface aids in refining product marketing strategies by enabling precise targeting of early reviewers, accelerating product adoption, amplifying sales, and optimizing marketing tactics in the competitive e-commerce landscape. © 2024 IEEE.
