Not a day goes by without some organization in the world being victimized by the theft of private data, resulting in heavy losses to both the organization and the owners of the data. For an organization, these losses include large expenditures to resume normal operation and damages to its reputation. For data owners, the losses may be financial, and may include identity theft. Security controls (e.g., encryption) help to secure vulnerabilities, but they are not foolproof. This paper proposes a design approach that minimizes the theft of private data from an organization by limiting as much as possible the quantity of such data that is stored on-premise or in the cloud, preferring instead to let the data remain on the user's computing device. This paper additionally presents an example of applying the approach to e-commerce. © 2022 IEEE.

Capturing images under low light conditions generally results in loss of contrast and difficulty discerning objects for both human observers and machine vision systems. To address this, the gain and exposure time are often increased to brighten the image. This may lead to the images becoming heavily affected by noise or motion blur. The impact of motion blur on image quality is therefore an important consideration. We present a simulation in which the exposure time and motion blur can be simulated and the impact on image quality metrics can be measured. Traditional image quality metrics are investigated, as well as some recently-proposed alternatives. Our simulation incorporates the exposure time, motion blurring, camera setting, ambient lighting, a noise model, and optical blurring. The model allows the blurring of image quality targets and real-world images;in this paper, image quality targets are used. The variation in image quality as a function of motion and exposure time may be useful in system design, in particular, determining the sensitivity to relative motion between object and imaging system. © 2023, Society for Imaging Science and Technology.

Developments in Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) have the potential to revolutionize medical education, especially in the areas of Coronary Angiography and Cardiac Auscultation. By giving medical and nursing students realistic, interactive experiences, the suggested VR and AR settings seek to modernize medical education by addressing the issues regarding the lack of real-world practice. Interactive 3D models, such as a realistic virtual body, rotatable heart models, ECG recordings, and real-life heart sounds, are available in the VR Cardiac Auscultation Environment. With the use of these components, students can practice diagnosing diseases including bradycardia, tachycardia, and cardiac murmurs in a dynamic and risk-free setting, improving their diagnostic skills. Similar to this, the AR Cardiac Auscultation Application combines interactive quizzes, machine learning for diagnostic verification, and real-time ECG scans to provide a powerful tool for teaching students how to recognize and understand various heart diseases and noises, this also can be a verification tool for junior doctors. By giving students firsthand experience with intricate medical procedures, virtual reality and augmented reality platforms offer a compelling and realistic approach to medical education. According to the research, these instruments can greatly enhance diagnostic proficiency, which will ultimately result in better educational outcomes and more qualified healthcare workers. © 2024 IEEE.

Despite the proliferation of educational programmes in Health Informatics (HI) worldwide, there is limited knowledge regarding students' preferences and learning strategies in HI courses. To address this gap, we conducted a study to gather and analyse data from three HI courses. Employing the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) and theories of deep and surface learning, we designed a questionnaire to collect data. The analysis of students' responses indicates that machine learning emerges as one of the most interesting topics, while certain topics such as data wrangling of genomics data were more challenging for students. Students expressed a preference for sequential learning. They exhibited multimodal tendencies regarding the type of learning resources, with tendency to prefer learning resources that have more visual contents. In all three courses, learners reported using deep learning strategy rather than surface learning, yet they appear to struggle with employing organisation, elaboration, and peer learning tactics. This study provides valuable insights into HI education, offering recommendations for educators, learners, and researchers to enhance HI education. © 2024 The Authors.

This paper presents novel sub-harmonic synchronous machines having series or parallel permanent magnet structures on rotors for better performance in terms of greater torque density. The stator of the machines has two sets of three-phase winding, where the additional winding is used to generate sub-harmonic magnetomotive force components for brushless operation. Similar to the stator, the rotor of them uses an additional winding to induce that sub-harmonic component. Rotor also uses a permanent magnet to improve machine performance in series or parallel hybrid structures having conventional or consequent pole permanent magnet structures. In this paper, 4 different rotors, 3 having hybrid excitation, are used and their performance is compared. To validate the performance, a 2D finite element analysis of 8 poles and 48 slots of sub-harmonic synchronous machines is carried out with different rotors. Finally, the wide-speed operation of the proposed machine is discussed. © 2023 IEEE.

The advent of Programmable Wireless Environments (PWEs) has transformed the wireless propagation phenomenon into a software-defined resource, leveraging software-defined metasurfaces (SDMs). These new technologies have shown that wireless waves can be routed within a space, contrary to the regular, chaotic wireless propagation, yielding considerable benefits to communication efficiency, and even completely new applications. A new topic has risen, in the context of modeling these capabilities as network resources, and allocating them to users. In this context, the present paper contributes HERA, a heuristic resource allocator that receives a setup with users and SDMs as input, and produces the necessary configuration of the latter, for efficient shared performance. Simulation results demonstrate considerable efficiency in this task, while the heuristic nature of HERA sets the basis for a flexible definition of complex user objectives in the future. © 2024 IEEE.

For the stable operation of sensitive systems, achieving high-bandwidth control in power converters is critical, as the current and voltage ripple directly reflects the quality of the synthesized waveform. The selection of an appropriate DC-link capacitor, which significantly influences the system’s bandwidth, plays a pivotal role in ensuring performance. This paper explores the intricate relationship between input and output DC-link capacitance and its effect on the system bandwidth in Dual Active Bridge (DAB) converters, a topic that remains relatively unexplored despite numerous research on high-bandwidth control for other power converters. To address the challenges posed by the bulky DC-link capacitor typically required to manage ripple current, the proposed approach integrates a harmonic trap filter to effectively mitigate these limitations. Using state-space modeling and state-variable feedback control, the design and control strategy is validated on a 5 kW DAB converter, demonstrating its ability to enhance system bandwidth without compromising ripple performance.

Emerging applications in healthcare, autonomous vehicles, and wearable assistance require interactive and low-latency data analysis services. Unfortunately, cloud-centric architectures cannot fulfill the low-latency demands of these applications, as user devices are often distant from cloud data centers. Edge computing aims to reduce the latency by enabling processing tasks to be offloaded to resources located at the network's edge. However, determining which tasks must be offloaded to edge servers to reduce the latency of application requests is not trivial, especially if the tasks present dependencies. This paper proposes a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) approach called TPTO, which leverages Transformer Networks and Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) to offload dependent tasks of IoT applications in edge computing. We consider users with various preferences, where devices can offload computation to an edge server via wireless channels. Performance evaluation results demonstrate that under fat application graphs, TPTO is more effective than state-of-the-art methods, such as Greedy, HEFT, and MRLCO, by reducing latency by 30.24%, 29.61%, and 12.41%, respectively. In addition, TPTO presents a training time approximately 2.5 times faster than an existing DRL approach. © 2023 IEEE.

In recent years, the radio frequency (RF) spectrum used by cellular operators has become an expensive resource. Therefore there is a need to develop creative methods for optimizing the use of the RF spectrum. To address this, we propose ST(P)-ENSL, a method consisting of two downlink cognitive radio transmission algorithms (ST-ENSL and STP-ENSL) that allow the secondary user (SU) on a frequency band to both transmit data symbols simultaneously, along with the primary user (PU), and perform MIMO-OFDM channel estimation and tracking, using the PU’s interference level feedback. ST(P)-ENSL can be integrated into existing communication systems, improving the SU’s throughput while inflicting minimal interference on the PU. We examine a scenario consisting of a PU and SU that share the same MIMO-OFDM frequency band. When using ST(P)-ENSL, the SU estimates the interference channel using the interference level feedback received from the PU and projects its transmissions onto the null space of the PU’s interference channel to minimize interference. The PU is unaware of the SU, which only requires the noise level samples sensed by the PU in order to estimate the interference channel. Our method offers a distinct advantage over existing methods by optimizing the utilization of frequency band in next-generation cellular systems. This is particularly beneficial for user equipment (UE) situated at the edge of a cell, ensuring efficient frequency band use. We evaluated our method by simulating an SU that employs our transmission method on a narrowband fading channel model. The results demonstrate ST(P)-ENSL’s ability to accurately estimate and track an interference channel over time and thus reduce the interference inflicted by an SU on a PU when transmitting data symbols to the UE registered on the SU’s base station.

As cyber-physical systems, power networks exchange data to ensure smooth operation. Through communication networks, the exchanged data becomes vulnerable to cyberattacks where malicious entities establish malevolent connections to falsify the data, which exploit the data integrity, leading to network instability. Machine learning-based solutions have been proposed to identify such malevolent actions, including false data injection attacks. This paper aims to (a) enhance the attack detection performance and (b) quantify the performance of non-recurrent and recurrent machine learning-based attack detection systems against multiple replay attacks that involve falsifying data via presenting normal operation patterns from previous timestamps. It turns out that capturing temporal aspects from the data using recurrent models outperforms non-recurrent models by 5-32% in accuracy (ACC). Specifically, we propose a recurrent graph neural network (RGNN) model that captures the temporal and spatial aspects of the network data. The RGNN model outperforms non-recurrent models by 14-32% and other recurrent models by 6-13% in ACC. The experiments are conducted on IEEE 14, 39, and 118-bus power networks where the model performance is enhanced (by up to 8% in ACC) in larger systems due to capturing more spatial and temporal features. © 2024 IEEE.
