Differential Privacy-Based data Collection for Improving data Utility and Reducing Computational Overhead

With the rise of real-time data collection through mobile devices such as smartphones, user-driven decision-making systems in various fields such as transportation and healthcare have advanced significantly. However, increasing concerns about the privacy of sensitive information have emerged, leading to the widespread use of differential privacy (DP) to mitigate these risks. Among DP-based data collection methods, local differential privacy (LDP) and distributed differential privacy (DDP) are prominent. While LDP provides low computational overhead, it compromises data utility, while DDP provides better utility at the cost of higher computational overhead. To address these limitations, this paper introduces a DP-compliant (θ,λ) data collection method. The proposed approach collects a fraction of θ of the total items and a fraction of λ of the total user data, achieving improved data utility compared to LDP while significantly reducing computational overhead compared to DDP, resulting in more efficient data collection. Experimental results on real-world datasets show that the proposed method not only improves data utility over LDP, but also effectively reduces computational overhead over DDP. In the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) landscape, where the Cloud-to-Things Continuum (C2TC) paradigm is now a reality, industrial applications need to cope with highly heterogeneous network and computing resources. Moreover, many industrial applications also involve Mobile Nodes (MNs). Efficient allocation of network and computing resources to meet the stringent requirements of such applications is often a very challenging task. In this paper, we propose J-NECORA (Joint NEtwork and COmputing Resource Allocation), a comprehensive analytical framework to derive the optimal joint allocation of network and computing resources in the C2TC, that guarantees the application requirements, even in the presence of MNs. If the optimal allocation does not exist, J-NECORA provides a best-effort allocation that minimizes the delay. The proposed framework is highly modular and flexible, and can be easily customized to different scenarios. We validated its effectiveness through simulation experiments, focusing on a specific use case. For the considered scenarios, the performance predicted by our framework matches quite closely the simulation results. © 2014 IEEE.

Smart cities have emerged as a response to the fast expansion of metropolitan areas;these places strive to improve the lives of their residents while simultaneously promoting environmentally responsible growth. To maximize urban services, the Internet of Things (IoT) is an essential technology that allows for the seamless integration of sensors, devices, and systems. This allows smart cities to become a reality. With an emphasis on smart transportation, energy management, healthcare, environmental monitoring, and public safety, this paper explores the critical role of IoT in smart cities. data security, privacy, scalability, and interoperability are some of the problems that arise when smart cities use IoT, despite the revolutionary potential it has. These obstacles are thoroughly examined in this work, along with possible solutions to these problems. This study gives a thorough overview of the IoT and its impact on smart city development, innovation, and urban resilience by focusing on the present situation, applications, and unanswered questions. © 2025 IEEE.

Plant diseases have a strong impact on agricultural productivity due to economic factors and a reduction in crop quality. This work focuses on the classification of apple leaves into four classes: healthy, rust-infected, scab-infected, and infected by both diseases, using the Plant Pathology FGVC7-2020 dataset that contains 3,642 images in total. The work involves the analysis of three sophisticated deep learning architectures: ResNet50, MobileNet and *** turned out that MobileN et showed the highest performance, reaching a 92% accuracy rate;it was followed by ResNet50 with 75% accuracy and InceptionV3 at 73%, hence underlining its better generalization capability and efficiency in classifying. We discuss the proposed methodology, which includes data preprocessing techniques, experimental results and final conclusions, is discussed in detail. These results underline the fundamental importance of determining an appropriate neural network architecture for the recognition of plant diseases, which is of prime importance to improve agricultural productivity. © 2025 IEEE.

This study explores the use of Genetic Algorithms (GA) to solve the NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem known as the Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP). The suggested GA, called GA-P, performs better than conventional techniques because it uses a new randomized crossover threshold. According to experimental assessments, GA-P outperforms a normal Genetic Algorithm with fixed crossover (GA-N, 628.6) and approaches the best Branch and Bound solutions (B&B, 560.6) with an average cost of 617.4 for 16-node graphs. With average execution times of 0.1347 seconds for 16 nodes, GA-P also demonstrates constant computational efficiency, outperforming B&B's exponentially growing temporal complexity (169.37 seconds for 16 nodes). In order to balance solution quality and computational cost, hyperparameter tweaking revealed the ideal values of population percentage (pp = 1.1), crossover proportion (cp = 0.8), mutation threshold (mt = 0.3), and exploration probability (ep = 0.2). The results show that GA-P is a scalable and efficient substitute for TSP, with room for improvement via parallelization and exploratory techniques. © 2025 IEEE.

data is often thought of and treated as a non-rival good, which would imply that one person’s use of data does not inherently diminish its availability for others. Building on research in privacy and statistics, we argue that there exist many important settings in which data should be treated as a rival good. Our argument takes into account modern uses of data for statistics, machine learning, and a variety of other purposes, in conjunction with requirements of privacy protection and statistical validity. Excessive sharing or reuse of data about individuals can lead to leakage of sensitive personal information, potentially causing harm to those whose information is included in the data. Overuse of data in statistics or machine learning can lead to overfitting, i.e., models that perform well on training data but poorly on fresh unseen data. Recognizing the rival nature of data offers an opportunity to rethink the way data are managed and used. In an age where the training of AI models generates a massive appetite for data, this perspective has the potential to inform the creation of new regulation and technical infrastructure that will be able to safely and responsibly manage data, track their various uses, and ensure that privacy and statistical usefulness are respected and preserved. We observe that current EU regulation and existing approaches to science seeking to increase opportunities for data-sharing and reuse of data misconstrue the complex nature of data, inadvertently creating risks of privacy harms and overfitting, hence squandering the societal benefits that can be derived from data. Recognizing the rival nature of data has implications for policy and practice. Regulation should address the limitations and risks associated with data reuse and facilitate technological measures to track, analyze, and manage data usage with the goal of ensuring that privacy and statistical validity are maintained. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

In modern society, the number of households raising pets is increasing. As pet ownership increases, the cost of treating companion cats is also rising, with a significant portion of these costs going toward the treatment of skin diseases. Skin diseases are among the common ailments in pets, and swift action is required if they occur in cats. However, early lesions lack distinctive characteristics, making accurate diagnosis difficult. Therefore, this study proposes a CADx(computer-Aided Diagnosis) system that classifies images of cat skin conditions into inflammatory lesions, non-inflammatory lesions, and normal images using a dataset of cat skin diseases. We selected the ConvNeXt model, based on CNN, which can learn regional information and features. To learn various patterns of skin lesions, we applied Mixup, an image augmentation technique. When Mixup was applied, the model accuracy was 0.8679, showing a 3.35% improvement compared to the original dataset. Additionally, Lookahead Optimizer was applied to ensure stable learning of Mixup. When both Mixup and Lookahead Optimizer were applied, the model accuracy was 0.8741, showing a high improvement of 3.97% compared to the original dataset. Therefore, the Lookahead Optimizer helps with the stable training of mixup, which can improve the performance of the model. Copyright © The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.

Skin diseases in companion cats can worsen if not treated promptly, and this can increase the financial burden on pet owners. To prevent this, early and accurate diagnosis is essential. This study introduces a deep learning-based computer-Aided Diagnosis (CADx) system designed to classify cat skin diseases into non-inflammatory and inflammatory lesions by comparing them with normal images. The system employs the EfficientNetV2 model and incorporates image augmentation techniques like AutoAugment and AugMix to enhance classification performance. The study results indicate that the developed model achieved an 84.68% accuracy for non-inflammatory lesions, reflecting a 10.06% improvement, and a 97.19% accuracy for inflammatory lesions, reflecting a 2.45% improvement. Furthermore, we applied Grad-CAM to visualize the regions of interest in the images, offering veterinarians critical insights into the location and characteristics of the lesions. This system has the potential to significantly improve the precision of diagnosing skin diseases in companion cats, thereby supporting better veterinary care. This paper attempts to improve the academic feedback systems via complex deep learning and ensemble methods. Leveraging the NIRF Rankings 2022 dataset that provides radical performance metrics of Indian academic institutions, the project would attempt to develop trustworthy models to monitor and facilitate improvement in the academic feedback system. The techniques used in data preparation prevent missing values, outliers, and categorical data in using advanced machine learning models. In order to construct the model and capture fine-grained patterns linked to academic achievement, 1D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) along with Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs), both individually and in combination, are employed extrapolated from the National Institutional Ranking Framework to obtain data. Precision, accuracy, recall, along with the F1-score will be used to evaluate these models' performance. By the time these findings are finished, they should be able to provide practical advice on how to improve academic evaluations' effectiveness and advance educational institutions' more flexible feedback systems. © 2025 IEEE.
