Method of Classifying Motor Failure Conditions Using an Auto-Encoder-Based Ensemble Technique

In the field, unsupervised learning-based fault diagnosis is necessary due to the lack of fault data. However, conventional auto-encoder models face challenges in fault classification. To address this issue, this study proposes an unsupervised learning-based auto-encoder model enhanced with an ensemble approach. The proposed model performs fault classification using gear, bearing, and eccentricity fault data, and employs the Layer-wise Relevance Propagation (LRP) technique to improve fault classification. Through the LRP technique, the key frequency bands relevant to each fault are identified and incorporated into the learning process, allowing for frequency band-based training. As a result, the proposed auto-encoder model improves classification performance and effectively distinguishes between different types of faults. © The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.

Study on Improving Hysteresis Motor Efficiency by Over-Excitation Based on Finite Element Analysis

A hysteresis motor is a motor characterized by an increase in the efficiency of the output to input ratio during an over-excitation in which a higher voltage is applied at startup than when the rated voltage is applied, and the voltage is reduced over a period of time after entering synchronous speed. However, due to the specificity of the rotor material, finite element analysis of hysteresis motors is difficult, so the design was conducted by analyzing only the rated voltage application condition through an equivalent circuit. As a result, the improved efficiency and torque that can be achieved by over-excitation were not verified, which was confirmed by experiments after the design was completed. However, recently, finite element analysis simulation that can express the hysteresis loop behavior has become possible, so finite element analysis of hysteresis motors has become possible, and the improved efficiency and torque that can be obtained through over-excitation can be confirmed. Therefore, this paper compares the output and efficiency of hysteresis motors under over-excitation and rated voltage application, and confirms the necessity and feasibility of designing hysteresis motors considering over-excitation. Solution to Mitigate the Disadvantages in the Design of LLC Resonant Converters for Electric Vehicle Fast Chargers with High Output Power and Wide Output Voltage Range

As the number of electric vehicles grows, the development of fast chargers is advancing rapidly. A DC-DC converter that can deliver high output power, a fixed input voltage, and a wide output voltage range is critical for electric vehicle fast chargers. While the LLC resonant converter is commonly used in these converters, it requires a low magnetizing inductance, which increases the transformer air gap, causing additional AC losses in the windings due to the fringing effect. To mitigate these issues, this study explores design solutions in LLC resonant converters. By using two transformers per module, with the primary sides connected in series and the secondary sides in parallel, the number of primary turns can be reduced, minimizing the air gap. This reduction also allows for structural changes in the windings, improving heat dissipation. Magnetic field analysis and circuit simulations were conducted to validate the proposed DC-DC converter design. Copyright © The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.

Structural behavior of reinforced concrete columns under eccentric loads strengthened by steel jackets filled with normal and high-strength concrete

Reinforced concrete (RC) columns are essential structural components in buildings and infrastructure, providing vertical load support and stability. However, these columns can be degraded over time due to various factors, such as environmental exposure, seismic events, and increased loading demands. As a result, the need for effective and reliable column-strengthening techniques arises to ensure the safety, durability, and longevity of structures. The main objective of this study is to investigate how fully strengthening damaged columns affects load-bearing capacity and overall structural performance. Moreover, this study tested 13 reinforced concrete columns during the experimental program. The original dimensions of these columns were 150 × 150 * 1200 mm. One specimen served as a control, while the remaining 12 underwent strengthening and enlarged to be (250 × 250 * 1200) mm. These specimens varied in stirrup spacing, reinforcing materials such as glass fiber and steel rebar, and different concrete’s compressive strengths. The results revealed that the load increasing ratio values were increased from 2.87 to 4.13 times of the reference specimen. The failure pattern was changed from brittle failure to ductile failure. Both stress-strain behavior and axial load deformation were enhanced. The ductility was increased from twice to six times the value of the reference specimen. On the other hand, the designed proposal was compared with standard codes (ECP 203–2020 and Eurocode 4). Strengthening RC columns using steel jackets and filling with various concrete’s compressive strengths enhanced their durability, stiffness, and performance under eccentric loads. © 2025 The Author(s). This paper examines the demagnetization characteristics of rare earth permanent magnets (PMs) used in electric machinery. An analytical model was designed considering a controllable shape, temperature, and the external magnetic field in PMs used in the rotor of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) for driving an electric railway vehicle (ERV). The demagnetization process was analysed based on the magnetization and demagnetization theory for PM materials in computer simulation. The result of the analysis can be used to calculate the magnetization and demagnetization phenomenon according to the input B-H curves. So, this paper presents the conditions of demagnetization by the external magnetic field in the running and stopped states and proposes a simulation method that can analyse demagnetization phenomena according to each condition and be used to design the IPMSM that maximizes efficiency and torque characteristics. A Development of PSS/E UDM of ESS Plant Controller for Verification of Grid Connection Code

In response to the increase in renewable energy sources, large-scale Energy Storage systems (ESS) are being deployed in the power grid. When power facilities composed of large-scale plants are connected to the grid, it is necessary to verify detailed engineering assessment and grid code compliance. To successfully conduct these evaluations using power system analysis programs, detailed modeling of the ESS plant is required. This paper presents the development of a User Defined Model (UDM) for ESS plant controllers, which is essential for performing engineering assessment and assessing grid connection code of ESS plants using PSS/E, a large-scale power system analysis program. Through various case studies, it was verified that the control performance required by grid connection code could be achieved by regulating the power based on a Point Of Interconnection (POI) by the plant controller, which manages multiple inverters in the ESS plant. © 2025 Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers. The "PARK-PLATZ" project was part of the "URBAN WALKS" regional project initiated by the Goethe Institutes East Asia. The project applied "Strollology - the Science of Walking," a German walking-based methodology that utilizes site-specific interventions. A one-day walking event temporarily transformed public parking lots with a particularly designed device, the PARK-PLATZ Vehicle. It involved a larger public group walk in a shitamachi neighborhood of Tokyo. The report clarifies Strollology and how it enables participants to re-imagine urban configurations and norms through unconventional behaviors and its effect on self-transformation. © 2025 Architectural Institute of Japan. A Study on the Performance of Bearingless PMSM Based on Rotor Permanent Magnet Arrangement

Magnetic bearing motors are in high demand due to their ability to operate in special environments without mechanical friction and lubrication, effectively avoiding wear and contamination. To overcome the complexity and maximum speed limitations, bearingless PMSMs (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) have been developed. This study explains the electromagnetic driving principles of bearingless PMSMs based on generation conditions and the components of suspension forces. Furthermore, the permanent magnets arranged on the rotor are designed to alter the magnetic flux distribution using various magnetization patterns. FEA(Finite Element Analysis) was conducted for each model, and the derived results were compared and analyzed. This study investigates the performance of bearingless PMSMs based on different rotor permanent magnet arrangements, and draws a comprehensive conclusion. © The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers.

SINR-Delay Constrained Node Localization in RIS-Assisted Time-Varying IoT Networks Using ML Frameworks

Node localization in time-varying Internet of Things (IoT) networks is an essential problem due to increased delay and poor Signal-to-Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) at the Base Station (BS). To improve the received signal strength at the BS, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) has recently been used between transmitter and receiver. Additionally, novel phase prediction methods and optimal weight assignment frameworks have been proposed over RIS and BSs, respectively. Nevertheless, these methods suffer from poor performance due to their heuristic approach, resulting in more time consumption and poor SINR. Motivated by the aforementioned challenges, we propose a novel node localization method over a RIS-assisted time-varying IoT network using Machine Learning (ML) frameworks in this work. Firstly, the method computes the optimal phase configuration over the RIS corresponding to each element using coeff2phaseNN, which has been trained on channel coefficients among the transmitter, receiver, and RIS. Subsequently, the weight of the individual antenna element at the BS is optimized using the proposed VectorSync model. The results confirm that the coeff2phaseNN method demonstrates a reduction of 89.79% in total MSE loss compared to the Artificial Neural Network-RIS (ANN-RIS) method. Additionally, it demonstrates a 71.04% reduction in the absolute RIS phase prediction deviation from the optimal phase compared to the ANN-RIS method. Moreover, the proposed VectorSync method attains a 79.28% and 92.29% reduction in time required for optimal weight assignment compared to the Bartlett and Capon methods, respectively. Finally, the Localization Error(LR) using the proposed method is compared to conventional methods in a time-varying experimental scenario and found to be the minimum, i.e., 6.156%. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

The rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) brings numerous benefits but further presents fresh difficulties, especially in terms of security. The distributed and interconnected nature of IoT devices makes them susceptible to various security threats. An Intrusion Detection system (IDS) plays a crucial role in safeguarding IoT networks by monitoring, detecting, and responding to potential security incidents. The Internet of Things (IoT) connects billions of devices, sensors, and systems, transforming industries and everyday life. However, this extensive interconnectivity also introduces significant security risks, making Intrusion Detection systems (IDS) a critical component for safeguarding IoT environments. Feature selection is a crucial aspect of building effective Intrusion Detection systems (IDS). Selecting relevant features not only helps in achieving better classification accuracy but also contributes to reducing false alarm rates. In the proposed system a moth flame optimizer is utilized to select the efficient features from the dataset, overall accuracy of over 97%.
