In this paper, to characterize the predictability of discrete-time continuous-state stochastic dynamical system (SDS) and use predictability to explain the probability of making accurate predictions, we have proposed a new performance metric, i.e., predictability exponent. This metric quantifies the asymptotic exponential decaying rate of the probability that prediction errors never exceed a fixed ϵ. The novelties of this predictability metric lie in that it is proposed from an asymptotic probabilistic perspective, which i) minimizes the exponential decaying rate of prediction probability, ii) holds an approximated expression deeply related with differential entropy within an error of O(ϵ), and iii) possesses a fast converging speed from finite decaying rate of O(e −K ) in the sense of probability. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the efficiency of the obtained results.

This paper proposes a fragility-aware stealthy attack for multiple mobile robots to secretly learn the accurate model of a multi-hop wireless network (MHWN). The stealthy attack scenario consists of three steps: active detection, node hijacking, and network eavesdropping. Our goal is to design distributed motion control strategies for naive attackers, for obtaining the connectivity information to evaluate the fragility degree of each node in MHWN. We designed a switching control strategy, which includes (i) move-to-fragile-neighbors-barycenter (MFNB) law and (ii) move-to-undetected-region-centroid (MURC) law. This strategy can drive mobile attackers to detect, hijack and eavesdrop on the MHWN’s nodes as quickly as possible. As a result, the fragility degree map of MHWN can be secretly learned to paralyze the whole network. Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed strategy is effective.

The protection and control system in substations has undergone significant evolution since the era of hardwired systems. In recent years, the increasing trend of digital transformation (DX) across various fields, including protection and automation systems, has led to the promotion of IEC 61850 process bus-based digital substations. However, recent analysis and evaluation have revealed numerous challenges in various aspects, such as technical issues, system performance, test methods, maintenance, and economic considerations. Moreover, many of these challenges lie outside the scope of international standards like IEC 61850 and IEC 61869. As a result, the worldwide implementation of digital substations has been hindered. This paper aims to describe the issues encountered during the implementation of process bus technology and propose solutions that focus on optimizing system configuration based on our experience in implementing digital substation projects and developing MU and IED. Addressing these issues is crucial to fully unlocking the potential of digital substations. One of the most promising advantages is the availability of digital data collected from substation equipment. By utilizing this data, overall power system operational efficiency can be enhanced, and equipment management can be optimized. Predictive maintenance can be implemented, enabling the early detection of potential equipment failures, minimizing unplanned outages, and reducing the need for emergency repairs, which contribute to unnecessary carbon emissions and equipment downtime. Ultimately, digital substations empower end-users to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and seamlessly integrate power systems, thereby supporting the carbon-neutral initiative and facilitating the transition towards a sustainable energy future.

Polytopic input constraints in learning-based optimal control using neural networks

This work considers artificial feed-forward neural networks as parametric approximators in optimal control of discrete-time systems. Two different approaches are introduced to take polytopic input constraints into account. The first approach determines (sub-)optimal inputs by the application of gradient methods. Closed-form expressions for the gradient of general neural networks with respect to their inputs are derived. The approach allows to consider state-dependent input constraints, as well as to ensure the satisfaction of state constraints by exploiting recursive reachable set computations. The second approach makes use of neural networks with softmax output units to map states into parameters, which determine (sub-)optimal inputs by a convex combination of the vertices of the input constraint set. The application of both approaches in model predictive control is discussed, and results obtained for a numerical example are used for illustration. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Rotating machine is a vital asset of the power plants. For the motors and generators in service, the stator winding insulation is generally operated under thermal, electrical, ambient, and mechanical stresses. The combination of these stresses causes insulation degradation that can lead to early aging or severe damage and, finally, the failure of such machines. The failure of rotating machines may result in immense financial loss and other aspects. Polarization and depolarization current (PDC) measurement has been introduced as one of the time-domain dielectric spectroscopy test techniques applied for insulation condition testing. This paper represents the application of PDC measurement to evaluate the insulation for the stator bars/coil insulation experienced with various kinds of stresses. Moreover, the PDC field test of generators and high voltage motors used in the power plants is introduced. From the experiments, the dielectric parameters obtained from PDC measurements are clearly useful parameters to evaluate the electrical insulation of such rotating machines. © 2021 IEEE.

This paper proposes a high-level path planning strategy under Time Petri net (TPN) formalism for a multiagent system, which is subject to Metric Interval Temporal Logic (MITL) specifications. The work aims to design a scalable model with respect to the number of agents, as the MITL formula requires multiple agents to ensure similar tasks. The obtained model is denoted Composed Time Petri net and it couples two TPN representations assigned to the motion of the agents, respectively to the MITL specification. The planning approach is based on model-checking methods and the results are evaluated on a case study applied in robotics industry.

This study presents a practical method to determine the carbon emission responsibility (CER) in DC traction power systems (TPSs) that incorporate renewable energy sources. The increasing importance of carbon peaking and neutrality necessitates novel carbon financing policies, such as carbon taxes and cap-and-trade, for which accurate CER calculation is crucial. This study focuses on CER related to electrical energy consumption, a complex task due to the separation of energy usage and carbon dioxide emissions. To address this, the research adapts the carbon emission flow (CEF) method to suit renewable energy-integrated DC TPSs, considering the unique characteristics of rail vehicles as energy prosumers and challenges in real-time power flow tracking. The proposed rail vehicle CEF model and real-time power flow tracing approach offer practical CER accounting solutions for system planning and real-time operation. A case study based on real engineering data validates the effectiveness of these methods, demonstrating their fairness to rail transit systems and AC utilities. © 2023, The Authors. — This paper addresses finite-time horizon optimal control of single-loop networked control systems with stochastically modeled communication channel and disturbances. To cope with the uncertainties, an optimization-based control scheme is proposed which uses a disturbance feedback and the age of information as central aspects. The disturbance feedback is an extension of the control law used for balanced stochastic optimal control previously proposed for control systems without network. Balanced optimality is understood as a compromise between minimizing of expected deviations from the reference and minimization of the uncertainty of future states. Time-varying state constraints as well as time-invariant input constraints are considered, and the controllers are synthesized by semi-definite programs. © 2021, CC BY.

The considerable increase of wind turbine rotor size and weight in the last years has made impossible to control as they were controlled 20 years ago. The cost of energy is an essential role to maintain this type of energy as a viable alternative in economic terms with traditional or other renewable energies. Through the last decades many different flow control devices have been developed. Most of them were shaped for aeronautical issues and this was its first research application. Currently researchers are working to optimize and introduce these types of devices in multi megawatt wind turbines. Gurney flap (GF) is a vane perpendicular to the airfoil surface with a size between 0.1 and 3% of the airfoil chord length, placed in the lower or upper side of the airfoil close to the trailing edge of the airfoil. When GFs are appropriately designed, they increase the total lift of the airfoil while reducing the drag. Thanks to the implementation of the of this flow control device the efficiency of a wind turbine improves, which results on an increase in the power generation. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2020.
