Light emitting diodes (LEDs) can be used as a light receiving component which is less likely to be saturated than photodiodes. The author has actually employed LEDs for the purpose of receiving optical signals in demonstration experiment sets of optical communication for educational purposes targeting elementary school to high school students. By using LEDs both for a light emitting component and a light receiving component, relationships among color of light (wavelengths or frequencies) and their energies as well as bandgap energies of semiconductor materials can be explained in such demonstration. © 2015 IEEE.

The out-of-curriculum project team organized by university students has been actively engaged in science promotion activities in local region over 10 years. These activities can provide the students with various Project-Based-Learning experiences and actually work as Active-Learning style education scheme. Although numerical evaluation is difficult, it can be considered that the activities of this student project team exhibit certain educational effects for the student members.

Investigations on contact surface damages due to arc discharges are very important for achieving better contact reliabilities. In this paper, some schemes to be employed for such purposes are briefly introduced. Commercially available microscopes such as a scanning laser microscope can be useful tools. In order to realize observations and numerical evaluations during switching operations, an optical crosssection method can provide us with various information on damage growth processes on contact surfaces under different operating conditions and/or with different contact materials. An important point is proper selection of evaluation equipment/schemes.
