Let P be a set of n weighted points, Q be a set of m unweighted points in the plane, and k a non-negative integer. We consider the problem of computing a subset Q′ ⊆ Q with size at most k such that the sum of the weights of the points of P dominated by at least one point in the set Q′ is maximized. A point q in the plane dominates another point p if and only if x(q) ≥ x(p) and y(q) ≥ y(p), and at least one inequality is strict. We present a solution to the problem that takes O(n+m)-space and O(kmin{n+m, n/k +m2}log m)-time. We (conditionally) improve upon the existing result (the bounds of our solution are interesting when m = o(√n)). Moreover, we also present a simple algorithm solving the problem in O(km2 + nlog m)-time and O(n + m)-space. The bounds of the algorithm are interesting when m = o(√n). Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) incorporate sensor nodes with minimal power consumption. Sensor devices are in high demand in many areas, including smart cities, environmental monitoring, the Internet of Things (IoT), health monitoring, and the like. As nodes are frequently located in remote places, and an ordinary node battery life is too short, energy depletion is a significant problem for the sensor network. But it's not practical to change or regularly maintain the sensor node's battery. This could cause the network to disconnect. Consequently, a recharging sensor node battery has been identified using energy harvesting (EH). It has several environmental forms, including solar, wind, mechanical, etc. The solar system provides unlimited energy resources to nodes. This paper examines a comprehensive case study of solar harvesting systems and their most recent applications. In solar harvesting nodes, the following primary components are utilised: solar panels, energy storage classes, a DC-DC converter, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), an energy predictor, and a sensing module. Furthermore, we have discussed some recent applications and future work of sensor networks, for example, green street lights, agriculture 4.0, outdoor environment-based monitoring, IIoT, hybrid storage class and new communication technologies. © 2022 IEEE.

The direction of conditional branches is predicted correctly in modern processors with great accuracy. We find several instructions in the dynamic instruction stream that contribute only towards computing the condition of these instructions. Hence, when the predicted direction of conditional branches is indeed correct, these instructions become Ineffectual – the functional state of the program would not be different had these instructions been dropped. However, the execution of ineffectual instructions cannot be avoided altogether because it is possible that the prediction of the branch direction is wrong. In this work, we determine all sources of ineffectuality in an instruction stream such as conditional branches, predicated instructions, indirect jumps and dynamically dead instructions. Then, we propose a technique to steer the ineffectual instructions away from the primary execution cluster so that effectual instructions can execute uncontended. We find that such ineffectuality-based clustering of instructions naturally simplifies the design and avoids several caveats of a clustered architecture. Finally, we propose a technique to detect instances when instructions were incorrectly marked as ineffectual, say due to a branch misprediction, and recover the pipeline. The empirical evaluation of the proposed changes on the SPEC CPU2017 and GAPBS benchmarks show performance uplifts of up to 4.9% and 10.3% on average respectively. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. We consider the following question of bounded simultaneous messages (BSM) protocols: Can computationally unbounded Alice and Bob evaluate a function f(x, y) of their inputs by sending polynomial-size messages to a computationally bounded Carol? The special case where f is the mod-2 inner-product function and Carol is bounded to AC0 has been studied in previous works. The general question can be broadly motivated by applications in which distributed computation is more costly than local computation. In this work, we initiate a more systematic study of the BSM model, with different functions f and computational bounds on Carol. Nowadays, Cloud computing is growing quickly with a maximum number of users and clients that are reaching from single users to huge business organizations. The cloud is facing significant challenges in managing large volumes of data and several cloud resources due to its rapid growth. Several optimization algorithms faced a challenge in scalability when working with more complicated scheduling scenarios. A combination of Resource Allocation and Task Scheduling using Improved Bat Optimization Algorithm (IBOA) by using dynamic weights with the speed update formula and increasing the random searchability and Modified Social Group Optimization (MSGO) by modifying the acquiring phase is introduced in this research. The developed IB and MSGO methods are simulated using a various simulation setup and the obtained results like response time, utilization of resources and energy consumption are compared against existing methods to measure the efficiency. For 100 tasks, the proposed IB and MSGO method achieved 32.5 watts of energy. The obtained results exposed that IB and MSGO method has better performance compared with the existing method namely Multi-Objective Task Scheduling Grey Wolf Optimization (MOTSGWO) in terms of energy consumption. © 2024 IEEE.

The 6TiSCH standard is widely adopted for Industrial IoT applications, offering low latency and high reliability. Cell scheduling plays a critical role in 6TiSCH networks by determining packet transmission schedules in terms of timing and channel allocation. The IETF introduced the Minimal Scheduling Function (MSF) and the 6top protocol to facilitate schedule management dynamically. This paper investigates the vulnerabilities associated with cell scheduling and the 6top protocol in 6TiSCH networks. We have demonstrated the existence of a cell depletion attack which can be launched by a compromised node, and its potential to disrupt the proper functioning of cell scheduling. This attack adversely affects transmission reliability, end-to-end latency, and energy consumption of victim nodes and their child nodes. To address the impact of this attack, we have proposed a defence mechanism which can be easily incorporated into the MSF scheduling function. Our approach incorporates parent-child authentication and validation measures to ensure that only legitimate nodes participate in the scheduling process. Through extensive simulations, we have verified that the proposed cell depletion attack significantly degrades network performance and increases the energy consumption of victim nodes by 41% in a 60-node network compared to normal functioning of scheduling function, leading to a significant decrease in device lifespan. However, when our defence mechanism is implemented, we observe a significant improvement in network performance even in the presence of the attacker.

Sample preparation on Digital Microfluidic Biochips (DMFBs) is an indispensable process for accomplishing biochemical reactions. Original reactants are usually diluted to the solutions with desirable concentrations. Framing various droplets with desired target concentrations on such a chip in an automated manner is the real challenge to sort out. In this work, we propose an Adaptive Sample Preparation Algorithm (ASPA) for DMFB. It can produce any sample droplets within the range of (0-1024) concentration factors (CF's) in an adaptive manner. The proposed method also ensures an error-free, cost-effective sample preparation for Digital Microfluidic Biochip (DMFB). Our method significantly reduces the number of sample droplets to prepare any single target concentration on a DMFB platform while the number of mixing-splitting steps remains the same for most of the cases compared to earlier methods. The requirement of buffer droplets and waste may be slightly more for a few cases in this method. However, as the buffer cost is negligible compared to fluid samples, the overall sample preparation cost decreases by our method. © 2022 IEEE.

The devastating floods that struck the state of Kerala, India, in August 2018 underscore the urgency of accurate weather monitoring and prediction, particularly during extreme rainfall events. The present study emphasizes the critical role of wind field information in understanding convective systems and their associated weather phenomena. This paper presents a detailed investigation focused on the estimation of horizontal wind fields, leveraging C-band polarimetric Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) data at Thumba (8.5°N, 77°E), India. The research employs the Velocity Azimuth Display (VAD), a widely used single Doppler wind retrieval technique, to estimate horizontal wind profiles. The VAD results are validated against radiosonde measurements, revealing a good agreement. Furthermore, the investigation extends to the exploration of a robust 2D horizontal wind field estimation, aiming to gain deeper insights to enhance weather understanding, prediction, and disaster preparedness in regions vulnerable to extreme rainfall and flooding events. © 2023 IEEE.

Advancement in technology can be utilized to ease workloads in many scenarios. In libraries, the search for a particular book may take a lot of time, and memorizing the position of each book is not an easy task and may result in reducing a person’s interest in visiting the library. Usage of Augmented Reality, helps in visualizing the plots of the library. After combining with GPS, the system will be able to suggest the path to desired book in minimum required time. In libraries, there can be multiple paths to reach a particular book. The proposed system compares the multiple paths to find the best way with minimum distance to reach the desired book. The developed Augmented Reality wayfinding system revolutionizes the library experience by overlaying directional information or real environments through a smartphone camera. Scanning a provided QR code in the library helps the users to access the interface of the system and search for the required book. Innovation of such a system not only simplifies the search for books but also enables customers to check book availability and stock levels via a database. It also suggests alternatives, if the specific book is unavailable. By engaging such on-screen bots overall user experience can be enhanced and workload can be minimalized.

Workouts or Exercises are some repetitive physical activities essential for maintaining good health. Workouts make us relax and happy, give us more energy, lower the risk of chronic disease, and rejuvenate our bodies and minds. Proper technique and posture are essential to get the most out of any workout; the same workout may lead to injury if performed incorrectly. This paper presents a method to identify a person’s workout action from realistic still images. In contrast to video-based action recognition, the challenge is more difficult for still photographs because the Spatio-temporal information is not present in images. This study proposes a deep learning-based model named WorkoutNet to recognize workout actions. The method achieved remarkable results on the Workout Action Image dataset, consisting of 2796 images prepared by us and on the publicly available Exercise image dataset. The suggested approach predicts different workout actions and classifies them into ten categories with high accuracy. The proposed WorkoutNet model attains 92.75% validation accuracy in classifying the workout action images, succeeded by the XceptionNet, VGG-19, DenseNet121, InceptionV3, MobileNet and VGG-16. Further, the classification performance has been evaluated using the F1-Measure and Confusion Matrix. The suggested model can be utilized in real-life to identify workout action images and assist humans doing workouts without a trainer or guide in understanding the right way.
