Biometrics based on electromyogram (EMG) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) signals has received significant attention due to its resistance to forgery and tampering, as well as its relatively higher convenience and security compared to other biometric modalities. However, most EMG and IMU signal-based authentication methods require explicit authentication using unnatural gestures, which is not userfriendly. To address this, we collected EMG and IMU data during virtual reality (VR) rhythm game play, which does not require explicit gestures, and performed implicit authentication. Using a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifier, we achieved classification accuracies of 91.71% for human identification and 87.91% for human authentication. The result demonstrated the feasibility of a seamless and implicit authentication in VR environments. © 2024 IEEE.

In this study, the properties of Cs3Cu2I5 (CCI) crystals grown using the Slow Vacuum Evaporation Technique (SVET) were examined. Crystals were grown at room temperature (300 K, 27 °C) under vacuum conditions, producing single crystals with maximum diameter of 13 mm over 23 days. We confirmed excellent crystallinity via X-ray diffraction (XRD), compositional uniformity via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and homogeneity via electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA). UV-Vis measurements indicated a high transmittance of 83 % and a bandgap of 3.64 eV. The Stokes shift of 110 nm, smaller than previously reported values, contributed to faster decay times and improved low-energy detection feasibility. Time-resolved photoluminescence (TR-PL) showed a rapid decay component (4.1 ns), accounting for 95.11 % of the total decay, demonstrating superior properties compared to existing reports. The gamma-ray detection capabilities of the CCI crystals were evaluated using six radioactive sources (Am-241, Ba-133, Co-57, Na-22, Cs-137, and Mn-54), achieving excellent energy resolution, including 5.2 % at 662 keV. The crystals displayed a highly linear response to gamma radiation (R² = 0.99998) with a light yield of 55,613 photons/MeV. Moreover, assessments of multiple crystals grown under identical conditions showed consistent performance with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 1.23 %. These findings confirm that SVET is a highly effective and cost-efficient method for producing high-quality CCI crystals, offering significant advantages over other growth techniques. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

The characteristics of gaseous laminar free-jet flow have been investigated experimentally by applying AC electric fields with a single electrode configuration. The jet flows were affected significantly by AC electric fields particularly at high voltages for applied frequencies less than 120 Hz, while those were not responded to further increased frequencies. It was shown that the limit frequency (120 Hz) could be associated with the collision frequency. For the frequencies less than 120 Hz, the laminar gaseous fuel stem was broken down at an axial distance and subsequently separated into three parts. The velocity fields in jet flows interacting with applied electric fields were compared with those without having electric fields. The results also showed that such breakdown heights with nozzle exit velocities decreased monotonously for all gaseous fluids used. The spread angle of fuel stem increased and then decreased with applied frequency after showing a maximum around 43Hz. Interaction of applying electric fields with laminar free jet flow was discussed in detail, and the possible mechanism was also explained.

Medical knowledge extraction has great potential to improve the treatment quality of hospitals. In this paper, we propose a clinical problem-action relation extraction method. It is based on clinical semantic units and event causality patterns in order to present a chronological view of a patient's problem and a physician's action. Based on our observation, a clinical semantic unit is defined as a conceptual medical knowledge for a problem and/or action. Since a clinical event is a basic concept of the problem-action relation, events are detected from clinical texts based on conditional random fields. A clinical semantic unit is segmented from a sentence based on time expressions and inherent structure of events. Then, a clinical semantic unit is classified into a problem and/or action relation based on event causality features in support vector machines. The experimental result on Korean medical collection shows 78.8% in F-measure when given the answer of clinical events. This result shows that the proposed method is effective for extracting clinical problem-action relations.

Unstructured clinical texts contain patients’ disease related narratives, but it is required elaborate work to mine the kind of information. Especially for the classification of semantic types of a clinical term, implementations of domain knowledge from resources such as the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) are essential. The UMLS has a limitation in dealing with other languages. In this paper, we leverage Wikipedia as well as UMLS for clinical event extraction, especially from clinical narratives written in mixed-language. Semantic features for clinical terms are extracted based on semantic networks of hierarchical categories in Wikipedia. Semantic types for Korean clinical terms are detected by using translation links and semantic networks in Wikipedia. An additional remarkable feature is a controlled vocabulary of clue words which can be contextual evidence to determine clinical semantic types of a word. The experimental result on 150 discharge summaries written in English and Korean showed 75.9% in F1-measure. This result shows that the proposed features are effective for clinical event extraction. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.
