This paper presents an investigation into fault tolerance for the fine-grained parallel algorithm for computing an incomplete LU factorization. Results concerning the convergence of the algorithm with respect to the occurrence of faults, and the impact of any sub-optimality in the produced incomplete factors in Krylov subspace solvers are given. Numerical tests show that the simple algorithmic changes suggested here can ensure convergence of the fine-grained parallel incomplete factorization, and improve the performance of the use of the resulting factors as preconditioners in Krylov subspace solvers if faults do occur.

Capturing and retaining the attention of students while learning complex topics like modeling and simulation is a critical task. In discrete-event simulation (DES), educators rely on examples like queueing systems in fast food restaurants or manufacturing organizations to provide the necessary context for learning. In many instances, these examples fall short in capturing the attention of students, especially at the middle and high school levels. One approach for learning complex topics, like creating simulations, is through gaming. This paper reports on the creative use of regular simulation tools to develop simulation games with entertainment content aimed towards engaging young learners. Two games are presented: one focuses on the use of decision nodes while the second focuses on the use of batch/separator nodes. As part of future work, we propose to use these games to evaluate how much knowledge transfers from an entertainment context to one using simulations for real-life situations.

A distributed network of sensors leverages its performance by aggregating information gathered by individual sensors through the process of sensor data fusion. Estimating parameters using a centralized scheme entails transporting data from multiple sensors to a centralized fusion center, leading to high network bandwidth consumption. Additionally, fusing raw sensor data from sensors with different sensing modalities may not be feasible. We propose an alternative approach in which each sensor first individually estimates the unknown parameters based solely on its own sensor data. Since sensors may not have a-priori knowledge of the probability distribution of the unknown parameters, each sensor independently computes its individual maximum likelihood estimates. Individual estimates along with their sufficient statistics are then communicated to the fusion center, which treats these estimates as observations to compute the optimum aggregated maximum likelihood estimates by maximizing the new likelihood function of these observations. The proposed technique offers two significant advantages: (i) Since each sensor computes its individual estimates based solely on its own sensed data, it is easily applicable to sensor networks having multi-modal sensors, and (ii) As compared to raw sensor data, communicating estimates and their sufficient statistics to the fusion center requires substantially less network bandwidth. Crop growth programs and crop optimizers act as important decision support tools in selecting crops and influencing farmer decision process. However the crop optimizers do not always include the crop growth models while selecting the best possible crops. In this paper we will present the equations used to model a generic crop growth model and couple it with an optimal crop scheduler, to select the best possible sequence of crops. The scheduler aims to achieve various objectives like maximizing performance, maximizing economic gain and minimizing environmental impact. Each objective has three different configurations with regards to the crop rotation and crop growth period. The results will be visualized using a Gantt chart to show the scheduling of the crops.
