The increasing complexity and wide use of an Advanced Unmanned Systems (UAS) generates new risks and security challenges, that have to be solve in Urban Air Mobility environment. Integrating all various aircraft systems in one environment maintaining high fidelity and safety using the methods and solutions originally designed for manned aircraft, might be insufficient. Existing infrastructure and approach are not designed to handle the expected volume of UAS traffic. In urban environments, where traffic, pedestrians, and existing aircraft are densely concentrated, the risks of collisions and accidents increase, potentially causing serious damage and harm. As UAS applications expand, from deliveries to surveillance, there is a pressing need for effective risk management strategies. Identifying and understanding risks is essential to developing appropriate mitigation measures for safe UAS operations in urban areas. This paper explores the challenges of UAS integration into urban environments having ability to perform set of different simulations with collision analysis. Presented software called Urban Air Mobility Traffic Analysis Tool, allows to perform simulations of urban air traffic based on various factors such as population density, airspace restrictions, and various aircraft performance including their different level of autonomy. In the following paper case study is presented to show the importance of creating proper ATM in UAM environment especially to find a safe airspace saturation. The delivered tool shows the possibility to calculate the capacity of the area having a strong safety factor. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Carpooling has been demonstrated as an effective strategy to optimize human transportation, saving costs and fuel, reducing congestion and emissions. Carpooling systems connect people with matching profiles in order to fulfill those goals, but it is still necessary a better understanding of the main issues in this area. The aim of this study is to provide a broad overview of current research related to carpooling practice. A thorough literature review has been carried out to analyze the most significant problems and their proposed solutions. Results have been classified based on three main aspects: carpooling users, platforms and applications for carpooling;planning and strategies;and future challenges. As it is shown, both barriers and incentives for the user adoption of carpooling have been studied by several authors, e.g., government regulations and incentives can encourage citizens to carpool;also, matching rates and optimization routes have been detected as significant issues. Finally, the combination of carpooling with autonomous vehicles and the improvement of existing platforms have been identified as future challenges. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Building a sustainable space ecosystem while maintaining a long term exploration mission is a challenge that the space industry is currently addressing. Part of this challenge is to fully utilize the limited resources available during these missions. The product life-cycle of consumable resources designed to support human spaceflight such as food packaging for food storage, clothing, and hygiene items are relatively short compared to the overall duration of a deep space mission. Once these resources serve no purpose, they are deemed "waste". In the case of the International Space Station (ISS), this waste is stored in cargo package transfer bags and once full, the waste is packed in a visiting vehicle which is jettisoned from ISS and burned up on earth re-entry. This operation reduces the already limited available volume on the ISS to conduct science operations, and this type of trash management is not utilizing resources in the most sustainable architecture. On a 1 year mission, a four person crew will produce approximately 2,600 kg of waste materials consisting of food packaging, used clothing, hygiene items, human waste, life support system supplies, and other crew supplies. The management of resources for long duration missions should include processes to convert waste into useful gases that can be repurpose into useful commodities or into inert gas that can be vented safely. The reutilization of waste into useful gases has the potential to augment science exploration by extending mission duration, enable remote surface operations, and closing the loop on space waste. NASA’s Trash-to-Gas research community has already demonstrated waste conversions systems that produce propellant commodities such as methane. However, several challenges exist in taking these conversion systems and adapting them for a space application;one of which includes the unexplored effects of microgravity on the conversion system. A significant portion of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are related to the use of medical devices, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and billions of dollars in expense to the healthcare system in the United States alone each year. One area in need of further development is appropriate standard methods for preclinical performance testing of medical devices pertaining to antimicrobial effectiveness. The outcomes of this testing are most useful when they can be related to a clinical benefit to medical device users. In this paper, we discuss the challenges with current in vitro performance testing, as well as some possible pathways to the successful development of antimicrobial combination product standards. © 2020 ASTM International. Magnetic continuum robots (MCRs) have garnered substantial attention as a new class of flexible robotic systems capable of navigating complex and confined spaces with remarkable dexterity. By combining continuous, deformable structures with remotely applied magnetic fields, MCRs achieve contactless, remote manipulation, making them well-suited for medical applications. This review introduces recent advances in MCR research, focusing on design principles, structural configurations, and control strategies. Various MCR designs and structures, including those integrated with permanent magnets, magnetic matter, ferromagnetic sphere, and micro coil, are discussed. Furthermore, different magnetic actuation platforms are introduced, and the level of MCR automation is classified based on control strategies. Key intelligent manipulation capabilities of MCRs, including navigation, delivery, printing, grasping, imaging, and sensing are explored. Finally, future development priorities and directions are identified to provide insights for advancing intelligent robotic systems.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

Although the estimated yearly rate of helicopter accidents has been decreasing over the past decade, it has now reached a plateau still well above that for commercial aviation and fixed-wing general aviation. Flight Data Monitoring has proven effective at improving safety in the commercial aviation domain and is now being considered for implementation in the field of helicopter operations. Flight Data Monitoring is a voluntary and proactive safety program in which the retrospective analysis of flight data records and the implementation of safety metrics allows the identification of precursors to safety-critical events and the monitoring of progress towards safer operations. For instance, loss of control in flight during ’’approach" to a heliport or an helipad has been identified by the International Helicopter Safety Team as one of the leading causes of helicopter accidents. In particular, unstable approaches account for about a fourth of the accidents when categorized by phases of flight. This paper first provides an overview of the conclusions from the United States Helicopter Safety Team concerning accidents analysis, occurrence categories identification and scoring, and safety enhancements identification. The paper then focuses on the development of a procedure to identify approach phases from flight data records by looking at parameters such as altitude and angle of approach, and to classify those approaches into various levels of stability depending on the variations of the relevant parameters along the approach trajectory. © 2017, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. We report on the detection of the [C ii] 157.7 µm emission from the Lyman break galaxy (LBG) MACS0416 Y1 at z = 8.3113, by using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The luminosity ratio of [O iii] 88 µm (from previous campaigns) to [C ii] is 9.3 ± 2.6, indicative of hard interstellar radiation fields and/or a low covering fraction of photo-dissociation regions. The emission of [C ii] is cospatial to the 850 µm dust emission (90 µm rest-frame, from previous campaigns), however the peak [C ii] emission does not agree with the peak [O iii] emission, suggesting that the lines originate from different conditions in the interstellar medium. We fail to detect continuum emission at 1.5 mm (160 µm rest-frame) down to 18 µJy (3σ). This non-detection places a strong limits on the dust-spectrum, considering the 137 ± 26 µJy continuum emission at 850 µm. This suggests an unusually warm dust component (T > 80 K, 90% confidence limit), and/or a steep dust-emissivity index (βdust > 2), compared to galaxy-wide dust emission found at lower redshifts (typically T ∼ 30 − 50 K, βdust ∼ 1 − 2). If such temperatures are common, this would reduce the required dust mass and relax the dust production problem at the highest redshifts. We therefore warn against the use of only single-wavelength information to derive physical properties, recommend a more thorough examination of dust temperatures in the early Universe, and stress the need for instrumentation that probes the peak of warm dust in the Epoch of Reionization.
