As a growing number of serious games have been developed for biology and computer science learning, few address the communication and technical challenges that arise in cyberinfrastructure (CI) intensive projects, where multiple-domain scientists collaborate. This paper describes empirical data collected during a year-long human-centered game design process, in which design ideas generated by high-school students were bridged with bioinformatics and parallel computing learning concepts. Our research shows that 'fun' and engaging game elements are actually well suited for addressing the sociotechnical aspects of CI projects. We provide a human-centered game design methodology, as well as a case study, in which this methodology is applied to the design of parallel computing-focused mini-games. This research has implications for integrating large-scale computing concepts such as shared resources and services into gaming experiences. It also has implications for supporting learning through enjoyable and fun experiences as part of a larger CI collaborative environment. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This paper presents a design concept for speech-based mobile applications that is based on the use of a narrative storyline. Its main contribution is to introduce the idea of conceptualizing speech-based mobile multimedia tagging and retrieval applications as a story that develops via interaction of the user with characters representing elements of the system. The aim of this paper is to encourage and support the research community to further explore and develop this concept into mature systems that allow for the accumulation and access of large quantities of speech-annotated images. We provide two resources intended to facilitate such work: First, we describe two applications, together referred as the 'Verbals Mobile System', that we have developed on the basis of this design concept, and implemented on Android platform 2.2 (API level 8) using Google's Speech Recognition service, Text-to-Speech Engine and Flickr API. The code for these applications has been made publically available to encourage further extension. Second, we distill our practical findings into a discussion of technology limitations and guidelines for the design of speechbased mobile applications, in an effort to support researchers to build on our work, while avoiding known pitfalls. 作者： John Maeda Joichi Ito John Maeda is an American designer and technologist as well as the catalyst behind the national movement to transform STEM (science technology engineering and math) into STEAM (by adding the arts). Maeda served as the sixteenth president of the Rhode Island School of Design. An internationally recognized thought leader at the intersection of design and technology Maeda now works with start‐up CEOs as design partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in Silicon Valley. While the web was being built in the 1990s Maeda led a research team at the MIT Media Lab to connect design with computer science. It was there that he fostered the first generation of engineers who could elegantly design and designers who could fluently code. His early work for print and the computer was accessioned into the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. His books include The Laws of Simplicity Creative Code and Redesigning Leadership. Joichi “Joi” Ito has been recognized for his work as an activist entrepreneur venture capitalist and advocate of emergent democracy privacy and Internet freedom. As director of the MIT Media Lab he is currently exploring how radical new approaches to science and technology can transform society in substantial and positive ways.

In this work, a generalised central pattern generator (CPG) model is formulated to generate a full range of gait patterns for a hexapod insect. To this end, a recurrent neuronal network module, as the building block for rhythmic patterns, is proposed to extend the concept of oscillatory building blocks (OBB) for constructing a CPG model. The model is able to make transitions between different gait patterns by simply adjusting one model parameter. Simulation results are further presented to show the effectiveness and performance of the CPG network.

In response to our nation's cry for more engineers, this paper describes how a major university has leveraged four NSF program grants to produce a highly successful program focused on retention, graduation, and graduate degrees. One of the programs is for lower division students, one is for upper division transfer students, one is for non-transfer upper division students and graduate students that have come up through the system, and one is for upper division students who come from five selected non-metropolitan community colleges in Arizona. The last program ties everything all together with a Transfer Student Center, a place for the S-STEM Academic Scholarship Success Class to meet, a place to host potential transfer students, and a place for transfer students to study and network. An emphasis of all of these programs is the encouragement and support of female and underrepresented minority students and students with unmet financial need. These programs have attained a 90-95% retention rate. For upper division transfer students not in the program, the graduation rate is about 70% for males and 64% for females. The transfer GPA shock was shown to be negligent for new program transfer students, compared with a half grade point drop for new upper division transfer students not in the program. Most importantly, during the past three years over 50% of the graduated scholarship students have gone right on to graduate school full-time. Seventy percent of the transfer students who did not intend to go to graduate school when they matriculated to Arizona State University, but who have now chosen to go on to graduate school, have reported that this program was a major influence in this decision change. Several of the students are now in PhD programs preparing to become professors. Information regarding the morphology of motor unit potentials (MUPs) and motor unit firing patterns can be used to help diagnose, treat, and manage neuromuscular disorders. In a conventional electromyographic (EMG) examination, a clinician manually assesses the characteristics of needle-detected EMG signals across a number of distinct needle positions and forms an overall impression of the condition of the muscle. Such a subjective assessment is highly dependent on the skills and level of experience of the clinician, and is prone to a high error rate and operator bias. Quantitative methods have been developed to characterize MUP waveforms using statistical and probabilistic techniques that allow for greater objectivity and reproducibility in supporting the diagnostic process. In this review, quantitive EMG (QEMG) techniques ranging from simple reporting of numeric MUP values to interpreted muscle characterizations are presented and reviewed in terms of their clinical potential to improve status quo methods. QEMG techniques are also evaluated in terms of their suitability for use in a clinical decision support system based on previously established criteria. Aspects of prototype clinical decision support systems are then presented to illustrate some of the concepts of QEMG-based decision making. © 2010 by Begell House, Inc.

For brevity, the class of "composite materials" in this paper is intended to refer to one of its subclasses, namely, the fiber-reinforced composite materials. In developing composite material property databases, three categories of data are needed. Category 1 consists of all raw test data with detailed information on specimen preparation, test machine description, specimen size and number per test, test loading history including temperature and humidity, etc., test configuration such as strain gage type and location, grip description, etc. Category 2 is the design allowable derived from information contained in Category 1 without making further experimental tests. Negotiations on a Canada-US Pacific salmon treaty began in 1908 but the first comprehensive treaty was not achieved until 1985. After a short period of cooperation, the treaty was undermined by arguments over catch sharing and the failure to rebuild some important salmon stocks. A revised treaty, agreed upon in 1999, established conservation of salmon as a priority and included a side-payment, in the form of two endowment funds designed in part to appease Canadian concern over catch imbalances. In this paper, the graph model for conflict resolution is used to examine the stability of the revised salmon treaty. The assessment suggests that the treaty will be stable if the *** is maintained or enhanced, even if both countries pursue aggressive fishing strategies. If the side-payment is not maintained, then it is likely that all groups will attempt to maximize their catch and Canada will seek a renegotiation of the treaty. © 2004 IEEE.

One feature of concurrent engineering is the notion of distributed design, and the ability to communicate changes to all participating disciplines. However, successful engineering design is constrained by the complexities of design activity. The differences in system architectures or methodologies, the diverse knowledge and information generated by these distributed disciplines, all compounded by the problems of coordinating the communication process, will reduce the effectiveness of distributed design. Current thinking indicates that multiple agent systems (MAS) could alleviate the complex and large engineering design problems. A drawback of these approaches is the failure to recognise the significance of agent autonomy and proactiveness. In this paper, it is suggested that agent attributes such as, proactiveness and autonomy are ideally suited to resolving the problems. They provide a more flexible and dynamic approach to multiple disciplines situated within distributed design environments, which can reduce redundant design activities, and thereby reduce co-ordination management and design versions. It is proposed that an agent-based framework incorporating CORBA technology should be used to maximise the proactive nature of autonomous design agents.
