Agent-based modeling and simulation is a way to model the behavior of populations of components and their interactions within a system. The key of this approach is to model the components of the system as autonomous agents and to simulate their behavior for evaluating the system as a whole. That is very useful for observing the emergence of properties in social, biological, environmental or financial systems, among others. Artificial immune systems, which is a sub field of artificial intelligence, comprises systems modeled by simplifying models from the biological immune system. If agent-based modeling and simulation is used as a laboratory for understanding the biological immune system then, it can also be used for transferring the observed principles into artificial immune system models or for evaluating models that have been already adapted for solving technical problems. This paper presents first, a methodology for transferring principles of the biological immune system into the field of artificial immune systems. Then, it presents a brief explanation of the behavior of the cells of the biological immune system, which are treated as internal agents inside a biological organism. Afterwards, the modeling of some selected type of cells and the simulation of the whole simplified system are presented. In the end, the principles of that simplified system are transferred into the design of an alarm management system for the smart grid. © 2012 IEEE.

Current standardization efforts for cooperative Intelligent Transportation systems both in the U.S. and Europe foresee vehicles to use a large number of changeable pseudonyms for privacy protection. Provisioning and storage of these pseudonyms require efficient and secure mechanisms to prevent malicious use of pseudonyms. In this paper we investigate several techniques to improve secure and efficient storage of pseudonyms. Specifically, we propose schemes based on Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) that allow to replace expensive secure key storage by regular unsecured memory and still provide fully secure pseudonyms storage. © 2013 ACM.

In classical real-time systems the resources for an application are allocated at system start so that every resource request can be fulfilled in future. This would lead to much internal waste of resources in the case of modern Self-X systems, because these systems have highly dynamic resource consumptions. The Flexible Resource Manager (FRM) was developed to overcome this problem. The manager puts temporarily unused resources at other applications' disposal. In this paper the FRM approach is evaluated by concrete application examples and randomly generated applications. © 2010 IEEE.

In self-adapting embedded real-time systems, operating systems and software provide mechanisms to self-adapt to changing requirements. Autonomous adaptation decisions introduce novel risks as they may lead to unforeseen system behavior that could not have been specified within a design-time model. However, as part of its functionality the operating system has to ensure the reliability of the entire self-x system during run-time. In this paper, we present our work in progress for an operating system framework which aims to identify anomalous or malicious system states at run-time without a sophisticated specification-time model. Inspired by the Artificial Immune systems Danger Theory, we propose an anomaly detection mechanism that operates not only on the local system behavior information of the monitored component. Furthermore, to ensure an efficient behavior evaluation, the anomaly detection mechanism implies system-wide input signals that indicate e.g the existence of a potential danger within the overall system or the occurrence of a system adaption. Due to the ability of this framework to cope with dynamically changing behavior and to identify unintended behavioral deviations, it seems to be a promising approach to enhance the run-time dependability of a self-x system.

Autonomous adaptation in self-adapting embedded real-time systems introduces novel risks as it may lead to unforeseen system behavior. An anomaly detection framework integrated in a real-time operating system can ease the identification of such suspicious novel behavior and, thereby, offers the potential to enhance the reliability of the considered self-x system. However, anomaly detection is based on knowledge about normal behavior. When dealing with self-reconfiguring applications, normal behavior changes so that the knowledge base requires adaptation or even (re-)construction at runtime. The stringent restrictions of real-time systems in terms of runtime and memory consumption assign this task to be a really challenging problem. In this paper, we present our idea for online construction of application behavior knowledge that does not rely on any training phase. The applications' behavior is defined by the application's system call invocations. For the knowledge base, we exploit Suffix Trees as they offer potentials to represent application behavior patterns and their associated information in a compact manner. We apply the online algorithm provided by Suffix Trees as a basis to construct the knowledge base with low computational effort. However, we integrate anomaly detection and classification into the online construction method. We ensure thereby that new behavioral patterns do not unconditionally update the behavior knowledge base, but beforehand, have been evaluated in a context-related manner inspired by Danger Theory, a special discipline of Artificial Immune systems.

A distributed satellite system is composed of several small satellites working collaboratively or symbiotically together on a satellite mission. In such a system, fault detection can be executed in a similar way the distributed and specialized cells of the biological immune system find and counteract sicknesses. This paper proposes the use of an agent-based artificial immune system model for the detection of faults. The method takes into account the reduced memory and computational resources that small satellites have, applying control of population of agents through death and reproduction, and dimension reduction of the signatures that identify the agents. Simulations of the dynamics of the population of agents, of a model adjusted to a system with several satellites, shows emergent properties for encountering faults and counteracting them correspondingly.

In this paper, we present AmICA: a flexible, compact, easy-to-program, and low-power WSN platform. Developed from scratch and including a node, a basic communication protocol, and a debugging toolkit, it assists in a user-friendly rapid application development. Our analysis shows that AmICA nodes are 67% smaller than BTnodes, have five times more sensors than Mica2Dot and consume 72% less energy than the state-of-the-art TelosB mote in sleep mode. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Logic-in-memory (LIM) is a promising flavor of the computing-in-memory (CIM) paradigm that utilizes memristive crossbar arrays to execute logic gates, resulting in high per-formance and energy efficiency. Binary neural networks (BNNs) can particularly benefit from LIM due to their massive parallel execution of binary logic gates. However, the impact of faults on BNNs accelerated with LIM has yet to be thoroughly investigated. To address this gap, we developed two distinct fault injection frameworks able to provide insights into the impact of different types of faults on the behavior of LIM. On the one hand, X-Fault aims to evaluate the impact of different faults that can affect crossbar arrays after manufacturing. On the other hand, FLIM allows for evaluating in-field faults on LIM. While both frameworks excel at their respective abstraction level, the complexity of neuromorphic systems requires a comprehensive fault analysis to grasp the fundamental impact stemming from the memristor to the BNN. Hence, we propose X-FLIM, a holistic fault injection platform capable of executing full-fledged BNNs on LIM while injecting in-field faults at the memristor and application level. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper addresses motion planning of a homogeneous modular robotic system. The modules have self-reconfiguration capability so that a group of the modules can construct a robotic structure. Motion planning for self-reconfiguration is a kind of computationally difficult problem because of many combinatorial possibilities of modular configuration and the restricted degrees of freedom of the module; only two rotation axes per module. We will show a motion planning method for a class of multimodule structures. It is based on global planning and local motion scheme selection that is effective to solve the complicated planning problem.
