Piezoelectric actuator can be used for handling and grasping of miniature parts in micro manipulation or robotic assembly where design of micro gripper is a critical issue because the object has to be inserted straightway into a hole during robotic peg-in-hole assembly. In this paper, the compliant micro gripper is designed using bimorph piezoelectric actuators along with a 3-degrees of freedom (DOF) based micro manipulation system. The analyses of piezoelectric based micro gripper and micro manipulation system are carried out which can provide the precise positioning of object during robotic micro assembly operations for shifting it from one to another hole position in a large work space (100 mm × 100 mm). By developing a prototype, it is demonstrated that piezoelectric actuator based compliant micro gripper is capable of handling different pegs and it can perform the robotic peg-in-hole assembly in a large work space.

micro-electromechanicalsystems is a rapidly growing field that will permeate our everyday lives in the coming decades. Recently, the evolution in microelectronics of combining mechanical and electrical functions has brought about an exciting new field micro/nano-electro-mechanicalsystem. Compliant mechanisms can play an important role in the design of micro-devices for micro-electro-mechanicalsystems applications. Compliant mechanism is flexible structures that generate desired motion by undergoing elastic deformations. The concept of structural optimization has been more and more widely accepted in many engineering fields. The structural optimization can result in a much more reasonable and economical structure design. In this investigation, structure optimization is applied for designing two-dimensional micro/nano angular-table compliant mechanism. The interface between Malab and Ansys were shown to obtain the optimal shape of the compliant mechanism. Structure design optimization of the two-dimension micro/nano angular-table with S-shape compliant structure was shown and all results are illustrated.

Compliant mechanisms have made an enormous contribution in the design process of various fields such as for adaptive structures, hand-held tools, components in transportations, electronics, and surgical tools. The use of compliant mechanisms will help in reducing the number of components, which therefore decrease manufacturing cost and additionally increase the performance. Topology optimization has proven to be a powerful method for the conceptual design of structures and mechanisms. Topology optimization is the technique that finds the optimal layout of the structure within a specified design domain. This paper presents the micro/nano angular-table compliant mechanism. The topology optimization is applied for designing two-dimensional micro/nano angular-table compliant mechanism. The final optimal topology configuration of the micro/nano-angular table is shown and discussed.

This paper presents a novel dielectrophoresis (DEP) chip for lateral separation of cells/particles at multiple frequencies. DEP force was enabled by interdigitated electrodes fabricated in the access channel. The non-uniform electric field distribution in the micro-channel is solved through finite element analysis. To improve the effectiveness of separation, the shape of insulators is optimized and other parameters such as the width of the electrodes are studied by introducing parameter K which can stand for the DEP force imposed on cells/particles. It is proved that planar electrodes can take place of 3D electrodes under certain condition. Furthermore functions realized by 3D electrodes can also be achieved by simple planar electrodes.

After two decades, data processing has finally, and probably forever, found its niche among civil engineering and construction (CEC) professionnals, through word processors, digitizing tables, management software, and increasingly via drawing software and computer-aided design (CAD), recently, robots have even started invading work sites. What are the main trends of CAD and robotics in the field of architecture and civil enginee ring? What type of R&D effort do university and industrial laboratories undertake to devise the professional software that will be on the market in the next three to five years? These are the issues which will be addressed during this symposium. To this effect, we have planned concurrently an equipment and software show, as well as a twofold conference. Robotic is just starting in the field of civil engineering and construction. A pioneer, the Civil Engineering Departement of Carnegie-Mellon University, in the United States, organized the first two international symposia, in 1984 and 1985 in Pittsburgh. This is the third meeting on the subject (this year, however, we have also included CAD). It constitutes the first large international symposium where CAD experts, specialists in architecture and CEC robotics will meet. From this standpoint, it should be an ideal forum for exchanging views and expe riences on a wide range of topics, and we hope it will give rise to novel applications and new syntheses. This symposium is intented for scientists, teachers, students and also for manufacturers and all CEC professionals.
