Blindness and severe visual impairment significantly affect quality of life in many aspects. Nevertheless, in order to ease daily activities, facilitate social integration and improve visually impaired persons’ quality of life, state-of-the art sensors and wireless communication technologies can be used. In this context, this paper proposes a new concept for visually impaired persons’ assistance. The proposed prototype aims to provide indoor Visible Light Communications (VLC) based assistance, obstacle detection and on-demand personal support. To improve functionality and to increase user self-esteem, the concept is discreetly integrated in a smart backpack that has additional functional features. In order to support this concept, the information concerning the user’s surroundings is provided by the indoor lighting system through VLC, where the data contained in the visible light is delivered to the user after the conversion of the VLC information into sounds and haptics. The preliminary experimental evaluation of the concept confirms its ability to adequately accomplish the envisioned functions related to VLC connectivity and assistance in traveling through unfamiliar places.

Wireless communication sensors are on the way of becoming the new normal on future intelligent and semiautonomous vehicles. In this context, this paper provides the results concerning the experimental evaluation of a new Visible Light Communications (VLC) technique that provides a significant improvement of the communication range. This concept is based on LED current overdriving compensated by a proportional reduction of the pulse width. Thus, by increasing the pulse current through LEDs, the optical power is proportionally increased, whereas in order to maintain the same average optical irradiance and to avoid LEDs destruction, the duty cycle is proportionally decreased, maintaining the average value of the current. The proposed concept has been tested in an outdoor Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication setup. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed technique can more than double the communication range. Thus, by gradually decreasing the duty cycle from 50% to 10% and by proportionally increasing the pulse current through the LEDs, the basic communication distance has been increased from 12 to 27 meters, while maintaining the BER lower than 10 −6 .

This article presents a comparative study of two topologies of three-phase photovoltaic inverters connected to the grid, between the usual two-level inverter and three-level NPC (Neutral Point Clamped) inverter. Inverter control and the boost converter MPPT controller are based on the SRF-dq method and the INC algorithm respectively. The comparison relies on evaluating the overall efficiency and harmonic distortion of the inverter. All circuits are modeled and simulated using Matlab-Simulink. The results obtained indicate satisfaction with the quality, of the current and voltage injected into the electrical grid, and reflect that both inverters are efficient and comply with IEEE-519 standard recommendations, but the three-level inverter performs better results than the two-level inverter.

In the context in which human society is struggling to achieve carbon neutrality and to reduce energy waste, this work proposes a novel Visible Light Communications (VLC) prototype designed for emergency message transmission enhanced with energy management consumption capability. Thus, in order to be able to accommodate different lighting requirements, the VLC transmitter is able to work with variable duty cycles, while maintaining the data link active. Moreover, different from existing works, the VLC receiver integrates a light monitoring function and an infrared data transmission function, which can be further expanded into a Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) system. This way, based on the workspace’s illumination level, the VLC transmitter can maximize energy efficiency through duty cycle adjustments. The proposed prototype has been implemented in a real working space and experimentally evaluated. The preliminary experimental results have confirmed the advantages of this concept, as the prototype demonstrated its ability to constantly adjust its illumination level while maintaining the active communication link. Additionally, the prototype is able of achieving a BER lower than 10 -7 for duty cycles between 10% and 90%.

Visible Light Communications (VLC) are a new wireless communications technology that benefits from numerous advantages. Nevertheless, due to particular limitations, its deployment is still not in sight. A specific VLC challenge is establishing the link when the transmitter needs to provide light dimming function or even when it is in off-state. To achieve this goal, a new indoor VLC prototype was developed and experimentally evaluated. The VLC transmitter has been developed as part of the indoor lighting infrastructure, whereas the VLC receiver is being developed as part of a smart backpack for visually impaired persons’ assistance. The prototype has been evaluated in light dimming conditions, going down to 1% duty cycle, which is perceived by the human eye as almost in an off-state. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the concept, as a BER lower than $10^{-6}$ can be maintained while decreasing the light intensity down to the point where the light seems totally off.

The efficient operation of HVAC&R systems are based on keeping indoor temperature and air quality at an optimum level without disturbing comfort. Starting from this point, in this experimental research, the factors affecting the measurement accuracy during the room temperature detection of a wall mount fan coil thermostat were examined. Among the external effects, the effect of the device components on the measurement was focused and the solution of the measurement deviations occurred in this extent was investigated. Based on the experiments, the algorithm that must be applied to reach the optimum temperature measurement of a room thermostat developed for Fan Coil systems was proposed.

Being often considered as one of the most important vital signs, oxygen saturation is a key element in the management of patient care. Pulse oximetry is one of the clinical tools used to measure oxygen saturation of the arterial blood almost instantly. Nevertheless, healthcare workers know that there are some technological limitations that can impact the accuracy of these devices. Using more than two wavelengths for estimating the oxygenation can improve the accuracy but at the expense of a higher price, which can limit the use in home settings. This paper proposes a different approach for a more affordable pulse oximeter, based on spectral identification in the red and near-infrared light domains. Thus, compared to a classical pulse oximeter solution, the proposed design is able to detect abnormal levels of hemoglobin derivatives by using six different wavelengths, offering this way improved accuracy in critical situations and helping in-home patients to deal with the first signs of sickness. © 2022 IEEE.

Grinding in mineral processing is used to control the ore at the technically feasible and economically optimum particle size to achieve mineral liberation for separation. A circulating-load ratio (CLR) during a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) milling process is critical for controlling particle size and energy consumption. This paper presents a CLR-prediction model based on clustering SAG milling operating conditions. First, operating parameters affecting the CLR are identified by comprehensively analyzing the complex mechanism and characteristics of a typical industrial SAG milling ***, a method is developed to cluster operating conditions of the SAG milling process based on the power consumption and CLR of the process. The method reveals the actual physical significance of each operating condition. Then, the support vector regression (SVR) is used to model the CLR in each operating condition. After that, a distance-based model integration strategy is designed to determine the weights of each SVR model to predict the CLR. Finally, integrating the SVR submodels yields a CLR prediction model. Actual run data demonstrated the accuracy and effectiveness of the model in predicting CLR. This method has significant practical value for improving SAG milling efficiency and is applicable to other complex industrial processes. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In the context in which pedestrians are the most exposed road user category in urban areas, this paper presents the results of an experimental demonstration of a new system designed to assist pedestrians in safely using a crosswalk. The proposed architecture consists of a pedestrian detection and localization unit that detects pedestrians in the crosswalk area, a visible light communications component that transmits this information toward the approaching vehicles using the visible light communications technology and a graphical user interface that enables the driver to receive relevant traffic safety information. The experimental investigation has shown that based on a multi-sensor data fusion approach, pedestrians are detected with an overall 100% detection rate, whereas the low power crosswalk sign VLC emitter can provide a communication range of up to 27 ― 40 meters, with a data rate of 100 kb/s and a BER in the 10-7― 10-4 range. Therefore, the experimental results indicate that the proposed VLC system has high performance in traffic situations that could pose serious issues to other concepts. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper introduces a new approach to Visible Light Communications (VLC) by utilizing optical fibers for decorative purposes while investigating their potential in VLC applications. An in-vehicle prototype was developed and tested, consisting of a VLC emitter distributing light through 500 optical fibers on a 1 x 2 meters’ surface to a mobile VLC receiver. Experimental results show the concept’s viability, achieving a BER below $10^{-7}$ for typical in-vehicle distances and demonstrating suitability for multiple data streams using wavelength division multiplexing. As far as we know, the use of optical fiber distributed light in VLC applications has not been addressed before.
