Promotion of Special Purpose Rice Production Technology in Selected Municipalities in Nueva Ecija, Philippines

Special Purpose Rice (SPR) is a technology that consists of different rice varieties that were developed by Central Luzon State University. The unique varietal characteristics of SPR are pigmented, glutinous, good-yielding varieties planted in lowland areas. This study was conducted to increase farmers’ income through employing different promotion and extension activities and enterprise development. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Cost and return and benefit-cost analysis were used to determine the financial benefits of using the SPR in different production systems. Results revealed that incorporating the following parameters is critical in the sustainable adoption of the SPR. Amongst them are: ensuring that recommended production technologies are strictly followed by the farmers, ensuring the quality of seeds for planting, the presence of a market for the produce, engaging the farmers in value-adding activities like processing, capability development in entrepreneurship, and adopting clustering approach of the farmers to address economies of scale in marketing and processing. The use of SPR produced an average yield of 6.11 MT/ha and 5.04 MT/ha during the dry and wet seasons from 2021-2023, respectively, higher than the usual varieties of inbred rice. The net benefit from producing a CLS-2 variety of SPR is higher than regular rice, having an average difference of Php 22,355.53 per hectare from 2021-2023.

Evaluating stakeholder engagement in collaborative research: co-producing knowledge for climate resilience

This study describes the development, implementation, and evaluation of an initial stakeholder engagement experience designed to facilitate knowledge co-production. The engagement experience is part of a collaborative research framework (CRF), which facilitates iterative interactions among diverse researchers and stakeholders around the topic of enhanced climate resilience. Here, we describe the: (1) need for and development of a CRF as it relates to stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production;(2) implementation of the initial engagement experience, focused around individual semi-structured interviews, in the context of a snow-dependent, arid river basin where historical water over allocation, climate change, and diversified water uses challenge the basin’s resilience;and (3) formative evaluation of the engagement experience using an online survey to inform the development of more effective engagement practices. Results of the evaluation indicate that, after participating, most stakeholders understand and recognize the importance of research goals, demonstrate positive attitudes toward collaborative research and researchers, view their contribution of knowledge and expertise as critical to research, and perceive researchers as eager to use their expertise. Moreover, stakeholders emphasized various context-specific goals for knowledge co-production, such as finding innovative ways to adapt to increased competition for diminishing water supplies. To achieve these goals, stakeholders suggested researchers learn about their basin, including its water allocation history and agricultural practices. These results highlight the importance of centering stakeholder engagement experiences within a broader CRF and formatively evaluating such experiences to adapt them to achieve research goals. © 2022, The Author(s).

The gap between extension agents’ interests and needs towards agricultural extension media

Agricultural extension media is one of the most important tools in agricultural extension activities. The purpose of this study was to analyze agricultural extension media that are considered important and needed by extension agents, as well as to analyze the level of gap between the level of interest and the need for agricultural extension media. The research location is in West Java Province which is limited by four districts representing the four agricultural ecosystem zones namely Bogor, Sukabumi, Ciamis and Indramayu Regencies. The research sample included 216 field agricultural extension agents from four different regencies. The collected data was then analyzed using the Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) technique. The findings revealed that agricultural brochures were the conventional media considered important and required by extension agents. WhatsApp is the digital media most important to extension agents, and cyber extension is the media most needed by extension agents.

Consumer Perceptions of the Healthfulness of ‘Ultra-Processed’ Food Products: A Cross-Sectional Study in Vermont

BackgroundRecent research increasingly associates ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption with a range of diet-related diseases, leading to discussions of interventions for reducing UPF consumption. However, little is known regarding consumer perceptions of UPF, including the degree to which consumers prioritize nutrient content relative to degree of processing when evaluating a food's overall healthfulness. ObjectiveTo identify the proportion of adult consumers who have heard of the term “ultra-processed food” in a statewide sample of adults residing in Vermont, and to examine the criteria Vermont consumers prioritize when evaluating a food product's healthfulness. Study Design, Setting, ParticipantsOnline survey collected from 671 Vermont residents in 2022, randomly sampled from a commercially available email list. Survey questions assessed perceptions of UPF and how consumers prioritize nutrient (sugar, fat, sodium) and non-nutrient (ingredients, processing) criteria when assessing the healthfulness of packaged foods. Measurable Outcome/AnalysisDescriptive statistics present perceptions of UPF, the proportion of respondents prioritizing each criterion, and demographic characteristics (age, gender, income, education) of the sample. Associations between variables are compared using chi-squares and logistic regression (p<0.05). ResultsWhen assessing the healthfulness of food products, respondents prioritized levels of added sugar (52.6% of respondents), ingredients (44.4%), and minimal processing (42.8%); and were less concerned with sodium (41.3%) and fat (37.3%) contents. Half of respondents (55%) had previously heard of the term “ultra-processed foods,” and the majority (91%) of those who had heard of UPF were concerned about the levels of UPF in their diets. This study investigates the use of lime mud as an eco-friendly foaming additive in the production of glass foam. Glass foams were prepared through a simple sintering method, utilizing glass cullet collected from households and incorporating different lime mud contents (0.5-2.0wt%). The effects of lime mud concentration on the density, porosity, and pore size distribution of the glass foams were examined. Additionally, the thermal conductivity, compressive strength, and Weibull modulus were investigated in relation to the average porosity. The results revealed that the pore size distribution was dependent on the amount of lime mud, exhibiting three distinct distributions: positively skewed, non-symmetric bimodal, and symmetric bimodal. The compressive strength of the prepared glass foams ranged from 5.53 to 12.73 MPa, while the bulk density and porosity fell within the ranges of 0.41-0.70 and 72.12-85.38%, respectively. The thermal conductivity could be as low as 0.07 W/m⋅K, approaching the upper limit for commercial glass foams used in thermal energy storage systems and meeting the requirements for Type I cellular glass thermal insulation classified by ASTM C552-16. © 2024, The Authors. The influence of social capital on the small-holders empowerment of livestock farming in Sragen Regency

The empowerment of smallholders is part of sustainable agricultural development to increase production. This study aims to identify the characteristics of beef cattle farmers and social capital, and also to determine the effect of social capital on the empowerment of smallholder beef cattle farmers in Sragen Regency. The study was conducted in June 2021 in Plupuh District by using purposive sampling method to determine the location and the respondents. The number of respondents was 100 smallholders who had at least 1 year of experience in raising beef cattle. Data were collected through direct interviews with the smallholders and were analyzed descriptively by using multiple linear regression analysis together with the F test and R2 test in order to determine the effect of social capital on empowerment. The results showed that most of the respondents had a low level of education, and the majority of the respondents' occupations were laborers. It also showed that the respondents had a side job as a smallholder and the status of livestock ownership was their own. Subsequently, the regression analysis obtained Y = 4.517 – 0.525X1 + 0.617X2 +0.153X3 - 0.186X4 + 0.550X5 and it is interpreted that all social capital variables consisting of willingness, openness, encouragement, activeness, and participation simultaneously affect the empowerment of beef cattle smallholders. In the coefficient of determination test (R2), the results obtained is 0.321 which implied that the social capital variable had an influence of only 32.1% on the empowerment of beef cattle smallholders, while the remaining 67.9% was influenced by other variables not included in this study. Therefore, it was concluded that social capital only had an effect of 32.1% on the empowerment of livestock smallholders.

The Mt. Malindang Range Natural Park (MMRNP) in the Philippines is a vital protected area that harbors a diverse range of flora and fauna with substantial economic significance. Despite the extensive research conducted within MMRNP, the monetary value of its rich biodiversity remains vastly underestimated. This research employs a combination of key informant interviews and focus group discussions with local and indigenous people (IP) communities living near MMRNP. Value chain analysis and resource rent calculation were utilized to determine the economic value of MMNRP’s bioresources and ensure their sustainability and equitable management. Through these participatory methods, nine bioresources of significant economic importance have been identified, prioritized, and found to be collected, utilized, and traded by communities. These include five floral species: Dendrocnide sp., Calamus sp., Cinnamomum mercadoi, Agathis philippinensis, and Gymnostoma sumatranum, and four faunal species: Limnonectes sp., Apis sp., Apis cerana, and Sus philippensis. The estimated annual value of these economically important bioresources within MMRNP is PhP 42,708,861.20. Given its potential contribution to the local economy, the establishment of enabling policies to protect bioresources is crucial to mitigate the adverse impacts of natural resource exploitation on both economic growth and the development of local communities residing near MMRNP. It is strongly recommended that joint close monitoring and supervision by relevant agencies such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), local government units (LGUs), and Protected Area Management Boards (PAMB) be implemented. This approach will promote transparency and consensus building, ensuring the sustainable management of these invaluable bioresources for access and benefit of present and future generations. The study determined the effect of incorporating Momordica charantia leaf powder (MCLP) into corn-starch 3D food-printing ink as a functional ingredient. The effects of the particle size (75, 131, and 200 μm) and quantity of MCLP on 3D printing performance, structural, textural, and rheological properties of corn starch gel were evaluated with different concentrations (5, 10, and 15% (w/w)) of corn starch. The viscoelastic properties of food inks were determined considering their behavior during extrusion and self-recovery after printing. Scanning electron microscope was used to characterize the microstructure. Based on the results, a high starch content (15%) with 5% MCLP was more favorable for 3D food printing. In addition, 3D printing performance, textural and rheological properties of formulated ink was mainly governed by the particle size of MCLP. The food ink with a 5% mass fraction of 200 μm MCLP had the highest printing precision and the best masticatory properties. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and influenza A virus infect the respiratory tract through surface proteins, causing similar symptoms. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, both viruses have posed significant ongoing global health threats. Like the influenza virus, SARS-CoV-2 evolves into variants that can reduce vaccine efficacy. Thus, herbal medicines are being explored as supplementary options to enhance protection against these infections. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of chlorogenic acid (3-CQA) and related extracts from green coffee beans and Echinacea purpurea against SARS-CoV-2 variants and H1N1 infection. The methods employed included an ELISA-based trimeric spike protein binding assay, viral infection assays, plaque assays, and molecular docking studies. Results showed that 3-CQA blocked spike protein/angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) binding for most SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, except the Delta variant. Extracts from Green coffee bean and E. purpurea effectively blocked all variants tested. Additionally, antibodies blocked spike protein binding up to Omicron BA.2. Molecular docking suggested that 3-CQA binding to Omicron BA.1, BA.2, and BA.4, though not to the Delta spike protein, may lead to steric hindrance, preventing receptor-binding domain interactions with ACE2. Finally, both 3-CQA and E. purpurea extract showed preventive effects against H1N1 viral infection, though with lower potency compared to SARS-CoV-2. In conclusion, 3-CQA has potential as a phytoconstituent marker for herbs with bioactive properties against SARS-CoV-2 and H1N1 viral infections. © 2024 Center for Food and Biomolecules, National Taiwan University
