Deep learning models demonstrate impressive performance in rapidly predicting urban floods,but there are still limitations in enhancing physical connectivity and *** study proposed an innovative modeling approach that integrates convolutional neural networks with weighted cellular automaton(CNN-WCA)to achieve the precise and rapid prediction of urban pluvial flooding processes and enhance the physical connectivity and reliability of modeling *** study began by generating a rainfall-inundation dataset using WCA and LISFLOOD-FP,and the CNN-WCA model was trained using outputs from LISFLOOD-FP and ***,the pre-trained model was applied to simulate the flood caused by the 20 July 2021 rainstorm in Zhengzhou *** predicted inundation spatial distribution and depth by CNN-WCA closely aligned with those of LISFLOOD-FP,with the mean absolute error concentrated within 5 mm,and the prediction time of CNN-WCA was only 0.8%that of *** CNN-WCA model displays a strong capacity for accurately predicting changes in inundation depths within the study area and at susceptible points for urban flooding,with the Nash-Sutcliffe e fficiency values of most flood-prone points exceeding ***,the physical connectivity of the inundation distribution predicted by CNN-WCA is better than that of the distribution obtained with a *** CNN-WCA model with additional physical constraints exhibits a reduction of around 34%in instances of physical discontinuity compared to *** results prove that the CNN model with multiple physical constraints has signifi cant potential to rapidly and accurately simulate urban flooding processes and improve the reliability of prediction.

Performance measurement of Taiwan hotels with a hierarchical network DEA with shared inputs

The structure of a hotel and its operational departments (e.g., catering department and occupancy department) is appropriate in a hierarchical organisation. However, the previous DEA research only focuses on the network process of internal structures for the hotel systems. Therefore, this paper develops a hierarchical network, DEA, to evaluate the hotels’ operational performance with the hierarchical network production systems. Moreover, the shared inputs of hotels could be allocated vertically along the hierarchical structure. An empirical analysis using data from 70 Taiwan’s international tourist hotels in 2014 was conducted. The results show that the overall operational efficiency of 70 hotels is low, and is attributed to a shortage in the transformation of service capability to earning capability. Meanwhile, although all hotels allocate a large proportion of shared inputs to the catering department, the operational efficiency of the catering department is mostly lower than the occupancy department. The proposed model also can be used for the production systems, which include a hierarchical network structure and some shared inputs. Copyright © 2023 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have become increasingly popular in recent years, with a wide range of applications in areas such as surveying, delivery, and security. UAV technology plays an important role in human life. Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques into UAVs can significantly enhance their capabilities and performance. After the integration of AI in UAVs, their efficiency can be improved. It can automatically detect any object and highlight those objects with detailed information using AI. In most of the security surveillance places, UAV technology is beneficial. In this paper, we comprehensively reviewed the most widely used UAV communication protocols, including Wi-Fi, Zigbee, and Long-Range Wi-Fi (LoRaWAN). The review further explores valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of these protocols and how cognitive abilities such as perceptions and decision-making can be incorporated into UAV systems for autonomy. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art UAV object detection in remote sensing environments, as well as its types and use cases in different applications. It highlights the potential applications of these techniques in various domains, such as wildlife monitoring, search and rescue operations, and surveillance. The challenges and limitations of these methods and open research issues are given for future research. © 2024

Exploring consumers’ adoption and recommendation in smart retailing: a cognitive absorption perspective

Because of the rapid development of the Internet of Things, the business mode of the retail industry has changed tremendously. Smart retail is increasingly receiving academic attention. However, research on smart retail has mainly focused on shopping utility and consumers’ interactions with smart technology rather than consumers’ perceptions and feelings regarding smart technology. In order to fill this void, this paper incorporates perceptions (i.e., cognitive absorption) into the technology acceptance model to investigate consumer intention in smart retail. In total, 322 consumers with experience using smart retail technology are surveyed, and SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) is used for analysis. According to the findings, cognitive absorption has a considerable influence on consumers’ perception of the usefulness and ease of use of smart retail technology, which, in turn, affects consumer adoption and recommendation intentions on this smart technology. Electricity consumption and economic growth nexus in Afghanistan: impact, causality, projections, and policy implications

This study aims to investigate the impact and causal relationship between electricity consumption and Afghanistan’s economic growth using datasets from 2002 to 2019. Furthermore, the study also examined the projection of electricity consumption until 2030 to foster policy enunciation. For co-integration, the study uses the autoregressive distributed lag model, and for future energy projection demands, it uses the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model. The results indicate that electricity consumption and economic growth have a significant positive relationship in the short and long term. Two basic estimators, Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) and Canonical Co-integration Regression (CCR), further confirmed the robustness of the results. In the short term, a one-way causal relationship flows from per capita gross domestic product to per capita electricity consumption, supporting the conservation hypothesis. In contrast, in the long term, a two-way causal relationship exists between these two variables, which supports the strong feedback hypothesis. Additionally, the projection results indicate that annual per capita electricity consumption and per capita GDP will continue to rise. We expect the annual per capita electricity consumption to rise from 128.6442 KWh in 2019 to 190.7997 kWh in 2030. Scientifically, a conservation/electricity-saving policy should be implemented in the short term in Afghanistan. In contrast, in the long run, the citizens’ power demand calls for short-term, medium-term, and long-term strategies for generating electricity. The existing literature indicates a lack of research on the proposed topic, with no empirical studies conducted on the relationship between electricity consumption and economic growth in Afghanistan. Therefore, we considered the impact of trade openness on these two variables within the context of Afghanistan. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Purpose: The paper aims to explore the effect of problem-based learning (PBL) embedding degree and education level on individual perception, as well as the moderating effect of nationality. Design/methodology/approach: The paper first conceptualizes PBL embedding degree which means the extent of applying PBL. It takes an empirical study on an international MBA class in one of the first-class universities in China. An investigation is taken with the designed "PBL-based Cognitive Perception Scale" and an Ordered Probit Model is constructed. Findings: The findings of this study are as follows: PBL embedding degree has a significant effect on the cognitive perception of student, which varies in different dimensions;the educational level of international student positively affects the cognitive perception toward PBL;and nationality may moderate the relationship between the PBL embedding degree and individual perception. Originality/value: The paper replenishes the investigation and application of Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning. By conceptualizing PBL embedding degree, the paper extends the research perspectives of PBL and proposes a subjective method on the evaluation of PBL. The paper uses the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic model to study the change law of hot topics in the field of digital economy and show the research topic evolution in this field over the last 30 years. The data consists of 1823 papers from various journals from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). The main results of LDA are as follows. First, we find five research topics to cover this research field. Second, among these topics, we find that two topics show an upward trend in intensity and another two show an downward trend in intensity, and high-quality development and governance of digital economy are new topics in recent years. It is hoped that the findings could help scholars to overview the field of digital economy and grasp the emerging evolution trends. © 2022 ACM.

The paper presents a case study related to the maintenance and on-site detection of faulty photovoltaic (PV) panels in a 14 years old on-grid system with a peak power of 17.82 kW from the National institute for research and development for Energy (INCDE ICEMENERG Bucharest) using a thermal camera, followed by the on-site measurement of the output power of a healthy and some PV panels with faults (hot spots and bypass activated diode) by Current-Voltage (I-V) and Power-Voltage (P-V) curves using an HT I-V 400. Laboratory tests were performed at Standard Test Condition (STC) at the National institute for research and development in Electrical Engineering ICPE-CA, Laboratory of Photovoltaic Systems using a PASAN Highlight Solar Simulator for the same PV panels and also electroluminescence tests were performed in order to determine the cause of the faults. Based on the results some panels can be repaired or changed with new ones in order to increase the PV system efficiency. © 2022 IEEE.

Clutches are essential components in automobiles and other power transmission systems. Flexible clutch systems, known for their superior qualities such as shock resistance, vibration resistance, and reliable operation under weightless conditions, are extensively utilized in various industries, including machinery, maritime, and oil extraction. This paper examines the component composition and working principles of each sub-system within the flexible clutch system. By analyzing fault information for the overall system and employing the fault tree analysis method, we identify the basic events leading to the failure of each sub-system and construct a fault tree model for the flexible clutch system. To address failures within the flexible clutch system, we develop a maintenance cost model based on component categories. By comparing the importance of preventive maintenance costs, we determine the optimal order for preventive maintenance of each system component. Finally, two strategies are employed to simulate the degree of importance, demonstrating the high flexibility of this measure. © The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2024.
