Cooperative co-evolution (CC) is a promising direction in solving large-scale multiobjective optimization problems (LMOPs). However, most existing methods of grouping decision variables face some difficulties when searching in the huge search space. Specifically, the methods of grouping decision variables can be classified into two types, i.e., high-consumption grouping methods and non-consumption grouping methods. On the one hand, the former ones divide the decision variables into different groups based on the correlation analysis between variables, which consume much evaluation. This way may lead to premature convergence within limited computational resources. On the other hand, the later ones allocate the decision variables into sub-groups based on some metrics, e.g., order and size, which consume no evaluation while may cause the search fall into local optima. To alleviate the above issues, this paper proposes a CC-based algorithm with a variable-importance grouping (VIG) method, called VICCA. Firstly, the decision variables are classified into several subgroups according to their importance quantified by a meta-gene construction method. Secondly, a CC strategy is designed to simultaneously optimize all subgroups of decision variables formed by VIG using the differential evolution operator, which aims to accelerate the convergence speed. Thirdly, a global evolutionary strategy is proposed to optimize original decision variable space by the competitive swarm optimizer, aiming to maintain the diversity. Finally, the experiments demonstrate that our proposed VICCA has the significant advantage in solving LMOPs when compared with state-of-the-art evolutionary algorithms.

Spread spectrum time-domain reflectometry (SSTDR) offers a new nonintrusive measurement technique for microwave imaging. While vector network analyzers (VNAs) are conventional tools in this domain, they present significant drawbacks such as high cost and lengthy scan times. This article explores the viability of substituting SSTDR devices for the VNA by validating their accuracy in comparison to traditional VNAs in the 0.5–4-GHz band. We conducted several tests of reflection and transmission measurements of resistor–capacitor (RC) loads, analysis of variations due to cable movement, calibration consistency, and temperature-induced variations. We also measured antenna S11 and S12 in two oil-based phantoms to simulate human breast tissue, comparing changes with the insertion of a metal tumor substitute. We found that the mean confidence intervals (CIs) of the VNA and SSTDR are better (less) than 0.03 for |S11| and 0.02 for |S21| from 0.5 to 4 GHz and that metal “tumors” in the oil are detectable. These results suggest that SSTDR may be a viable alternative to VNAs for applications such as microwave breast imaging, warranting further investigation in more robust setups.

KKL Observer Synthesis for Nonlinear Systems via Physics-Informed Learning

This paper proposes a novel learning approach for designing Kazantzis-Kravaris/Luenberger (KKL) observers for autonomous nonlinear systems. The design of a KKL observer involves finding an injective map that transforms the system state into a higher-dimensional observer state, whose dynamics is linear and stable. The observer’s state is then mapped back to the original system coordinates via the inverse map to obtain the state estimate. However, finding this transformation and its inverse is quite challenging. We propose to sequentially approximate these maps by neural networks that are trained using physics-informed learning. We generate synthetic data for training by numerically solving the system and observer dynamics. Theoretical guarantees for the robustness of state estimation against approximation error and system uncertainties are provided. Additionally, a systematic method for optimizing observer performance through parameter selection is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through numerical simulations on benchmark examples and its application to sensor fault detection and isolation in a network of Kuramoto oscillators using learned KKL observers. © 2025, CC BY.

In this paper, the performance optimization of federated learning (FL), when deployed over a realistic wireless multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system with digital modulation and over-the-air computation (AirComp) is studied. In particular, a MIMO system is considered in which edge devices transmit their local FL models (trained using their locally collected data) to a parameter server (PS) using beamforming to maximize the number of devices scheduled for transmission. The PS, acting as a central controller, generates a global FL model using the received local FL models and broadcasts it back to all devices. Due to the limited bandwidth in a wireless network, AirComp is adopted to enable efficient wireless data aggregation. However, fading of wireless channels can produce aggregate distortions in an AirComp-based FL scheme. To tackle this challenge, we propose a modified federated averaging (FedAvg) algorithm that combines digital modulation with AirComp to mitigate wireless fading while ensuring the communication efficiency. This is achieved by a joint transmit and receive beamforming design, which is formulated as an optimization problem to dynamically adjust the beamforming matrices based on current FL model parameters so as to minimize the transmitting error and ensure the FL performance. To achieve this goal, we first analytically characterize how the beamforming matrices affect the performance of the FedAvg in different iterations. Based on this relationship, an artificial neural network (ANN) is used to estimate the local FL models of all devices and adjust the beamforming matrices at the PS for future model transmission. The algorithmic advantages and improved performance of the proposed methodologies are demonstrated through extensive numerical experiments. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes a distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (DM-MIMO) aided multi-tier vehicular edge computing (VEC) system. In particular, each vehicle terminal (VT) offloads its computational task to the roadside unit (RSU) by orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), which can be computed locally at the RSU and offloaded to the central processing unit (CPU) via massive satellite access points (SAPs) for remote computation. By considering the partial task offloading model, we consider the joint optimization of the task offloading, subchannel allocation and precoding optimization to minimize the total cost in terms of total delay and energy consumption. To solve this non-convex problem, we transform the original problem into three sub-problems and use the alternate optimization algorithm to solve it. First, we transform the subcarrier allocation problem of discrete variables into convex optimization problem of continuous variables. Then, we use multiple quadratic transformations and Lagrange multiplier method to transform the non-convex subproblem of optimizing precoding vectors into a convex problem, while the task offloading subproblem is a convex problem. Given the subcarrier and the task allocation and precoding result, we finally find the joint optimized results by iterative optimization algorithm. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm is superior to other benchmarks. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

digitalization is recognized as a powerful enabler for decarbonizing the building sector. The International Energy Agency has highlighted its potential to improve safety, productivity, accessibility, and sustainability of energy systems. This work aims to present innovative applications of digital twins within the European Project DigiBUILD, focusing on optimizing energy systems for enhanced efficiency and reduced carbon footprint. The architecture of the developed digital twins w detailed, focusing on data collection, services description, and their implementation. Through three detailed case studies, the paper explores real applications of digital twins: the Heron pilot, whose aim is to manage a cluster of buildings and optimally charges electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions; Veolia, where a district heating networks to optimally manage heat sources in the production plant to reduce gas consumption and emissions; and Emotion, focusing on a building equipped with photovoltaic panels and electric vehicles and implementing services for optimal vehicle charging to maximize self-consumption, in day-ahead scheduling but also in real time. A discussion finally highlights the challenges and limitations encountered in the deployment of digital twins, emphasizing the importance of user interaction in facilitating efficient energy management. This research contributes in underlining the significant potential of digital twins in advancing the digitalization of the energy sector, contributing to the European Union's goals for sustainability and reduced environmental impact.

This article presents a novel method for controlling a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) wind energy system in the presence of variable wind speeds. In order to achieve decoupling control of the active and reactive power, the rotor-side converter (RSC) of the DFIG is controlled using field-oriented control (FOC). The system is very complicated and nonlinear, making it challenging to adjust the PI gains appropriately. The present research proposes the utilization of the Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm as an approach to optimize the gains of a Proportional-Integral (PI) regulator. The simulation results demonstrate that the GWO-PI provides a lower criterion value and an improved response than the conventional PI.

We introduce a novel graph-based framework for alleviating key challenges in distantly-supervised relation extraction and demonstrate its effectiveness in the challenging and important domain of biomedical data. Specifically, we propose a graph view of sentence bags referring to an entity pair, which enables message-passing based aggregation of information related to the entity pair over the sentence bag. The proposed framework alleviates the common problem of noisy labeling in distantly supervised relation extraction and also effectively incorporates inter-dependencies between sentences within a bag. Extensive experiments on two large-scale biomedical relation datasets and the widely utilized NYT dataset demonstrate that our proposed framework significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods for biomedical distant supervision relation extraction while also providing excellent performance for relation extraction in the general text mining domain. Workload co-location has become the de-facto approach for hosting applications in Cloud environments, leading, however, to interference and fragmentation in shared resources of the system. To this end, hardware disaggregation is introduced as a novel paradigm, that allows fine-grained tailoring of cloud resources to the characteristics of the deployed applications. Towards the realization of hardware disaggregated clouds, novel orchestration frameworks must provide additional knobs to manage the increased scheduling *** present Adrias, a memory orchestration framework for disaggregated cloud systems. Adrias exploits information from low-level performance events and applies deep learning techniques to effectively predict the system state and performance of arriving workloads on memory disaggregated systems, thus, driving cognitive scheduling between local and remote memory allocation modes. We evaluate Adrias on a state-of-art disaggregated testbed and show that it achieves 0.99 and 0.942 R 2 score for system state and application’s performance prediction on average respectively. Moreover, Adrias manages to effectively utilize disaggregated memory, by offloading almost 1/3 of deployed applications with less than 15% performance overhead compared to a conventional local memory scheduling, while clearly outperforms naive scheduling approaches (random and round-robin), by providing up to ×2 better performance.
