In this paper we demonstrate how the combination of acoustical and visual stimuli can be introduced in an ambiance simulation for automobiles. The synchronization of the audio and the video is very important and is discussed in this paper. Furthermore, a subjective evaluation was performed which proved that the combined presentation of acoustical and visual stimuli is more effective than a separate presentation of audio or video. Ten participants were shown seventeen different scenarios. At the time of the evaluation some questions were asked to measure how realistic the ambiance is. Most of the participants felt that the combined audiovisual ambiance simulation is most effective. This result also shows that the audio-visual simulation has a significant effect for creating a realistic ambiance for automobiles.

Microphones placed on the seat belts of an automobile (in the following shortly called beltmics) are an interesting alternative compared to other sensor positions. Because of the small distance to the talker's mouth, usually a good signal quality (e.g. measured in terms of high signal-tonoise ratio) can be achieved. However, the signals may also be disturbed because beltmics can easily be touched by, e.g., clothes and they might be in the air stream of automotive ventilation systems. In addition, applying array processing techniques is difficult because the geometry is flexible and may change over time. This paper presents signal enhancement algorithms designed for beltmics including echo cancellation, estimation of instationary noise, and microphone combining techniques. Results based on a real-time implementation are shown.

The communication inside a vehicle can be impaired by a high background noise while driving at medium or higher velocities and by the unusual orientation of the passengers as they are not facing each other. As a consequence the passengers often start to raise their voices and to change their positions by leaning forward or, in case of the front passengers, turning backwards to improve this situation. These adaptations to the communication situation may be uncomfortable, exhausting, and might result in a security risk if the driver turns around. An in-car communication system (ICC system) can improve the communication by recording the speech signals and reproducing the enhanced signals over the loudspeakers inside the compartment that are close to the listening passengers. After and during the design and development of such systems, the achieved quality is of great interest. Therefore, a spectral distance approach is presented in this contribution. Even if spectral distance measures are well established and often used for quality evaluation in speech communication systems, we face here a special challenge, which is the creation of an appropriate reference signal. In addition, an investigation of the reliability of the proposed quality estimate by means of a subjective listening test was performed and the results are presented.
Acoustic feedback compensation in speech applications often suffers from an insufficient adaptation. As a result feedback whistling may be audible and the compensation gain and generally the speech quality is limited....
