RTL Interconnect Obfuscation By Polymorphic Switch Boxes For Secure Hardware Generation

Logic Obfuscation is a well renowned design-for-trust solution to protect an Integrated Circuit (IC) from unauthorized use and illegal overproduction by including key-gates to lock the design. This is particularly necessary for ICs manufactured at untrusted third-party foundries getting exposed to security threats. In the past, several logic obfuscation methodologies have been proposed that are vulnerable to attacks such as the Boolean Satisfiability Attack. Many of these techniques are implemented at the gate level that may involve expensive re-synthesis cycles. In this paper, we present an interconnect obfuscation scheme at the Register-Transfer Level (RTL) using Switch Boxes (SBs) constructed of Polymorphic Transistors. A polymorphic SB can be designed using the same transistor count as its Complementary-Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor based counterpart, thereby no increased area in comparison, but serving as an advantage in having more key-bit combinations for an attacker to correctly identify and unlock each polymorphic SB. Security-aware high-level synthesis algorithms have also been presented to increase RTL interconnects to Functional Units impacting multiple outputs such that when a polymorphic SB is strategically inserted, those outputs would be corrupted upon incorrect key-bit identification. Finally, we run the SMT (Satisfiability Modulo Theories)-based RTL Logic Attack on the obfuscated design to examine its robustness. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Large scale artificial intelligence (AI) models possess excellent capabilities in semantic representation and understanding, making them particularly well-suited for semantic encoding and decoding. However, the substantial scale of these AI models imposes unacceptable computational resources and communication delays. To address this issue, we propose a semantic communication scheme based on robust knowledge distillation (RKD-SC) for large scale model enabled semantic communications. In the considered system, a transmitter extracts the features of the source image for robust transmission and accurate image classification at the receiver. To effectively utilize the superior capability of large scale model while make the cost affordable, we first transfer knowledge from a large scale model to a smaller scale model to serve as the semantic encoder. Then, to enhance the robustness of the system against channel noise, we propose a channel-aware autoencoder (CAA) based on the Transformer architecture. Experimental results show that the encoder of proposed RKD-SC system can achieve over 93.3% of the performance of a large scale model while compressing 96.67% number of parameters. Plant disease recognition is of vital importance to monitor plant development and predicting crop ***,due to data degradation caused by different conditions of image acquisition,e.g.,laboratory *** environment,machine learning-based recognition models generated within a specific dataset(source domain)tend to lose their validity when generalized to a novel dataset(target domain).To this end,domain adaptation methods can be leveraged for the recognition by learning invariant representations across *** this paper,we aim at addressing the issues of domain shift existing in plant disease recognition and propose a novel unsupervised domain adaptation method via uncertainty regularization,namely,Multi-Representation Subdomain Adaptation Network with Uncertainty Regularization for Cross-Species Plant Disease Classification(MSUN).Our simple but effective MSUN makes a breakthrough in plant disease recognition in the wild by using a large amount of unlabeled data and via nonadversarial ***,MSUN comprises multirepresentation,subdomain adaptation modules and auxiliary uncertainty *** multirepresentation module enables MSUN to learn the overall structure of features and also focus on capturing more details by using the multiple representations of the source *** effectively alleviates the problem of large interdomain *** adaptation is used to capture discriminative properties by addressing the issue of higher interclass similarity and lower intraclass ***,the auxiliary uncertainty regularization effectively suppresses the uncertainty problem due to domain *** was experimentally validated to achieve optimal results on the PlantDoc,Plant-Pathology,Corn-Leaf-Diseases,and Tomato-Leaf-Diseases datasets,with accuracies of 56.06%,72.31%,96.78%,and 50.58%,respectively,surpassing other state-of-the-art domain adaptation techniques considerably.

As the largest class of small non-coding RNAs, piRNAs primarily present in the reproductive cells of mammals, which influence post-transcriptional processes of mRNAs in multiple ways. Effective methods for predicting piRNA and mRNA target relationships can help identify piRNA functions, investigate the possibility of piRNAs as biomarkers and therapeutic targets. In this study, we propose a computational approach for classifying the relationships of piRNA-mRNA pairs based on an interactive inference network (IIN). First, we gather piRNA-mRNA target data, collect sequence data by position alignment, and construct a benchmark dataset. Furthermore, a reliable negative set is constructed by positive-unlabeled learning. Finally, we view a piRNA and a mRNA sequence as a premise and hypothesis sentence, respectively, and IIN model is used to predict the relationship between them. The experiments demonstrate that our method effectively characterizes piRNA-mRNA interaction and could be beneficial for researchers to investigate piRNA functions. © 2023 IEEE.

Software vulnerabilities are a major cyber threat and it is important to detect them. One important approach to detecting vulnerabilities is to use deep learning while treating a program function as a whole, known as function-level vulnerability detectors. However, the limitation of this approach is not understood. In this paper, we investigate its limitation in detecting one class of vulnerabilities known as inter-procedural vulnerabilities, where the to-be-patched statements and the vulnerability-triggering statements belong to different functions. For this purpose, we create the first Inter -Procedural Vulnerability Dataset (InterPVD) based on C/C++ open-source software, and we propose a tool dubbed VulTrigger for identifying vulnerability-triggering statements across functions. Experimental results show that VulTrigger can effectively identify vulnerability-triggering statements and inter-procedural vulnerabilities. Our findings include: (i) inter-procedural vulnerabilities are prevalent with an average of 2.8 inter-procedural layers;and (ii) function-level vulner-ability detectors are much less effective in detecting to-be-patched functions of inter-procedural vulnerabilities than detecting their counterparts of intra-procedural vulnerabilities. © 2024 ACM.

Multi-access edge computing (MEC) represents an emerging solution to address the issues related to reliability, availability, context awareness and low latency in modern and future mobile networks. Despite the great interest and effort in developing MEC solutions, only a few works are available in the literature to model the existing trade-offs between available resources and the related performance of MEC nodes. This letter aims to fill this gap by proposing a measurement-based approach to indirectly derive an effective model for any type of MEC node, capable of capturing the existing trade-offs among different performance parameters. Basically, the idea is to characterize the input-output relationship between offered computational and communication load and achievable performance. A network emulator is used to generate the data to define the model. The results provide proof-of-concept of idea by analyzing the different trade-offs and achievable performance of a sample MEC node under CPU and networking limitations. © 2019 IEEE.

In electric power transmission and distribution systems, the use of overhead lines instead of underground cables is preferred by power utilities mainly due to the lower construction cost and the easier maintenance access. On the other hand the equipment used in overhead lines is stressed by several factors, such as weather conditions, lightning, vegetation fires, etc. In particular, vegetation fires under the overhead transmission lines could have catastrophic results for the installed equipment and can cause long-lasting electricity interruptions. In this study, condition assessment results are presented for eighteen 150 kV composite insulators exposed to a forest fire event, occurred in the August 2021, in the island of Rhodes, Greece. The evaluation of the fire effects on composite insulators was performed by employing several macroscopic and microscopic diagnostic techniques including visual inspection, hydrophobicity classification, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and optical microscopy analysis. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

User-generated content is daily produced in social media, as such user interest summarization is critical to distill salient information from massive information. While the interested messages (e.g., tags or posts) from a single user are usually sparse becoming a bottleneck for existing methods, we propose a topic-aware graph-based neural interest summarization method (UGraphNet), enhancing user semantic mining by unearthing potential user relations and jointly learning the latent topic representations of posts that facilitates user interest learning. Experiments on two datasets collected from well-known social media platforms demonstrate the superior performance of our model in the tasks of user interest summarization and item recommendation. Further discussions also show that exploiting the latent topic representations and user relations are conductive to the user automatic language understanding. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
