The experiment was conducted to determine the Hue optical properties of the three categories of Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) namely unripe, underripe and ripe. The Nikon Coolpix 4500 digital camera with tele-converter zooming and the Keyence machine vision were used to capture the FFB images with two different settings of natural environment and direct sunlight. The species of oil palm tree used for the experiments were Elaeis Oleifera and Elaeis Guineensis Jacq. The images from the Nikon digital camera were analysed for optical properties of Red, Green, Blue (RGB) and then convert to Hue value using developed graphical user interface (GUI). The Hue values will then be compared to the value obtained from Keyence machine vision. The images of oil palm FFB in plantation were captured with setting cameras parameter namely shutterspeed which set to 0.125 seconds, image sensor's sensitivity (ISO) was set to Normal and white balance were calibrated using the standard white calibration CR-A74. The lighting intensity under oil palm canopy was simultaneously recorded and monitored using Extech Light Meter Datalogger. Using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), the ratio of test statistic of F with F critical for experiments under natural environment of oil palm plantation indicated the best differences of the hue optical properties among different maturity level of unripe, ripe and overripe FFB. Using the SAS programming for statistical analysis, the Hue and Red color values were found had significant effect to distinguish the maturity level (fm) of FFB with Pr > F are showed less than 0.01. The Green and Blue color values were not significant effect to differentiate the FFB maturity level which indicated the value of Pr > F showed 0.0243 and 0.9938 respectively. The Hue and Blue color values were not interaction with different lighting condition and the maturity level which indicated Pr > F for ml*fm showed 0.0668 and 0.1667 respectively. This paper presents a new adaptive approach for image denoising with Gaussian noise based on a combination of the Bidimensional Empirical Mode Decomposition (BEMD) and the the discrete wavelet transforms (DWT). The BEMD is an auto-adaptive method for the analysis of nonlinear or non-stationary signals and images. The input image is decomposed into several modes called Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs), which show new characteristics of the images. In this paper, we propose to apply the BEMD approach in the image denoising domain by using the first IMF to reduce the Gaussian noise in blurred images. After that, we combine the BEMD with the DWT to improve the BEMD denoising method. Finally, we show the influence of the number of IMFs filtered with the DWT on the visual quality in term of PSNR of the denoised image.

This paper presents a power-efficient parallel cache coherence protocol for network-on-chip interconnection fabric on many core chips. With the increasing numbers of processor cores, a directory-based cache coherence protocol is more scalable and expected to be used for the future chip architectures. However, the characterization of directory-based protocol on a NoC platform shows that many cycles are used to perform command communications to ensure the data consistency before a data packet is transmitted or processed, which restricts the performance. In this paper, a parallel cache coherence protocol is designed to address the problem, which decouples the transmission of the data packets and command packets. Specifically, the parallel mechanism also provides an opportunity to reduce power consumption by using power-optimized wires. A formal speedup model has been established to estimate the performance of this approach. Simulation experiments show significant performance improvement and good system scalability: (1) the average latency reductions are 4.38%, 5.35%, 8.53% and 11.25% for 16, 32, 64, and 128-cores, respectively, (2) the numbers of the L2 cache accesses are greatly reduced, (3) the proposed protocol improves the system performance with up to 18.6%, and (4) the average power savings are 5.66%, 8.14%, 10.73%, and 13.23% for 16, 32, 64 and 128-cores, respectively.

The time-domain receiving properties of a multi-mode cylindrical waveguide antenna are investigated. The configurational properties of the antenna are characterized by the time-domain scattering matrix that interrelates the time-domain amplitudes of the axial modal constituents traveling towards and away from the radiating aperture of the waveguide, which is taken as their reference plane. The excitation of the system by an incident field is expressed as an excitation integral over the aperture that results from the application of the pertaining time-domain Lorentz reciprocity relation of the time-convolution type. Numerical results illustrate the complexity of the changes in pulse shape (with the associated loss of signal integrity) that occur upon the coupling of the incident wave to the different modal constituents.

The ground states of some many-body quantum systems can serve as resource states for the one-way quantum computing model, achieving the full power of quantum computation. Such resource states are found, for example, in spin-52 and spin-32 systems. It is, of course, desirable to have a natural resource state in a spin-12, that is, qubit system. Here, we give a negative answer to this question for frustration-free systems with two-body interactions. In fact, it is shown to be impossible for any genuinely entangled qubit state to be a nondegenerate ground state of any two-body frustration-free Hamiltonian. What is more, we also prove that every spin-12 frustration-free Hamiltonian with two-body interaction always has a ground state that is a product of single- or two-qubit states. In other words, there cannot be any interesting entanglement features in the ground state of such a qubit Hamiltonian.

The deployment of wireless sensor networks in many application areas requires self organization of the network nodes into clusters. The clustering Algorithm is a kind of key technique used to reduce energy consumption. Efficient way to enhance the lifetime of the system is to partition the network into distinct clusters with a high energy node as cluster head. The different methods of node clustering techniques have appeared in the literature. In this article we propose a new protocol called Balanced and Centralized Distributed Energy Efficient Clustering scheme for heterogeneous wireless sensor networks (BCDEEC), which the Base Station ensure that the high energy nodes becoming a gateways and cluster heads to improve network lifetime and average energy savings. Once the cluster heads and associated clusters are created, cluster-head-to-gateway routing is used to transfer the data to the base station to reduce the energy consumption of cluster head and decrease probability of failure nodes. Finally, the simulation results show that BCDEEC is more energy efficient and is more effective in prolonging the network life time and prolong the time interval before the death of the first node than current important clustering protocols in heterogeneous environments.

This paper gives insight into the system design and hardware architecture of Nancy, which is a social robot in humanoid form that is currently being developed in Social Robotics Lab (SRL), Interactive and digital Media Institute, National University of Singapore. In contrast to industrial robots, the design of Nancy focuses on safety issue, social interaction and attractive appearance. In order to achieve these objectives, Nancy is designed to be user-friendly and approachable. The mechanical structure of Nancy is presented in the beginning. After that, the hardware architecture which includes processor system, vision system, audio system, communication system, power system, and motion system, is described systematically. Finally, the roles of integrated sensors are described and implemented works are summarized.

The role of robots can be changed from labor to leader. In this paper few key issues for robot-based leadership is explained. Specifically this paper highlights the importance of robot-based leadership and provides base for emotion-laden leadership by robots, robot leadership advantages and modes of robot leadership. The role of emotion in leadership is extended to robotic applications and possibility of improving robot-based leadership by focusing on emotional attachment is presented. Emotion-laden leadership by robots addresses the core of leadership and that is emotions and feelings among leader and followers. These emotions are the backbone of the influence exerted by leader on followers. Therefore, introduction, exploration and development of Lovotics is important for robot-based leadership to be effective. Various reasons which support the idea of using robots for leadership are explored. These key issues are embodiment, multitasking ability, anthropomorphism, programmability, programmability, deduction, reasoning and problem solving, decision making and planning, learning, imitation, collaboration, adaptability, modularity, believability, repeatability, interactivity and Connectivity. Several modes of robot leadership are explained. Role of humans and robots in robot-based leadership is explored. Admin, crew and factor based configurations are investigated and both centralized and decentralized methods are presented.

Electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EV/HEV) have the advantage of being more environmentally friendly and quieter than internal combustion engine vehicles. However, reduced noise can also lead to potentially dangerous situations for pedestrians when an oncoming vehicle is inaudible due to background noise (e.g. Kerber and Fastl, internoise 2007). The installation of devices that produce warning sounds in vehicles to alert pedestrians is being considered in various countries. Because this is a global topic, it is of vital interest to determine whether there exist cross-cultural differences. Pilot studies on this topic were performed in Japan (Yamauchi et al., internoise 2010) and, with improved input devices and test procedure, in Germany (Menzel et al., DAGA 2011). The level of three possible warning sounds (engine noise, car horn, and band-pass noise) were adjusted in presence of four different urban background sounds (busy street, residential area, heavy traffic, and shopping area) in laboratory environments. In the first part of the experiments, subjects were asked to adjust the level of the warning sounds so that they were clearly audible and could be reliably detected in the background noise. In the second part the goal was to adjust the level so that the warning sounds were just audible. The results of the adjustments showed no significant difference between the two subjects groups. The results were discussed in view of inter-individual and intraindividual differences. Moreover, the results were compared to current recommendations for sound levels of warning sounds in quiet vehicles.

This paper presents the mechanical design of a social robot, Nancy, developed by Social Robotics laboratory, Interactive and digital Media Institute, National University of Singapore. The objective of our project is to introduce the social robot which is capable to interact with people, especially the elderly, based on fundamental, functional and social tasks. We developed Nancy with multi-module structure and 32 degrees of freedom (DOFs), including 24 and 8 DOFs in upper-body and lower-body, respectively. 8 DOFs are considered in each arm to make Nancy able to imitate human limbs' motion. Nancy's head involves eye and eyelid motions with 3 DOFs which is on top of a 2-DOFs neck. The wheeled-base is designed in such a way to facilitate the multi-directional movements for Nancy. One of our main objectives in Nancy's mechanical design is to obtain powerful and smooth motion, light-weight joints and simple kinematics. They are achieved by Bowden cable-pulley mechanism driven by actuators located in lower-body. Accordingly, all joints are designed to have intersected axes. Most joints are driven by brushless D.C. motors embedded with electrical brake system to stabilize the robot, especially in case of power loss.
