engineering installation works on FTTH-PON laboratory test bed: Case study

This study introduces a low cost technique for testing and monitoring process that can be applied specifically for Fiber-to-the-Home Passive Optical Network (FTTH-PON). The simplest and low cost method would be using a Optical Power Meter (OPM) which is able to detect the total loss on the network. However, to identify faulty sections of a network, segmentation need to be done together with the optical power meter. Another testing and troubleshooting method would be using the Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR). The OTDR within the network is able to detect the component that causes losses in the network. However, elements acting as a power splitter are not being able to be detected by the OTDR. Therefore, the Access Control system (ACS) is developed to bypass those elements and allows the use of OTDR entirely. This method is proven to be a faster method than the first. Additionally, it can be upgraded to monitor the line status by accumulate all the result in one display computer screen. But this mechanism is not interested to be discussed detail in this study. The new configuration of FTTH is named as modified FTTH. In the end, we compare the installation cost between the conventional and modified FTTH for different network size according to number of users. © Asian Network for Scientific Information.

In order to develop a close relationship between humans and robots, we proposed a multi-modal sentimental model which considers both long and short term affective parameters of interaction. Our model is inspired from scientific studies of love in humans and aims to generate a bi-directional love between humans and robots. We refer to this sentimental connection as “Lovotics”. We have formulated probabilistic mathematical models for identified factors of love, and aim to provide a clear, distinct and discrete interpretation of the intimacy between humans and robots. Such mathematical models are assembled by a Bayesian Network depicting the relationship between intimacy and the causal factors for love. Furthermore, a novel affective state transition system is proposed which takes into account not only the current state caused by interactions, but also the effects of the previous states and internal factors of the robot. Hence, the robot is capable of acting consistently and naturally. The behavior of the robot is controlled by the above two modules via an Artificial Neural Network to develop a realistic affective communication between a human and a robot.

We derive an adaptive power control method for a collaborative network utilizing partner selection that aims to minimize the frame error rate (FER). We model a decode-and-forward (DF) collaborative network under block fading conditions, which contains M independent users utilizing codes, whose performance can be expressed by a signal to noise (SNR) threshold, such as turbo codes. We show that partner selection can reduce system complexity and power allocation can improve the FER performance. We use both a search method as well as a convex deterministic method to demonstrate our power allocation scheme. This research extends other work in which adaptive power allocation is only applied to limited scenarios. We conclude that power control can greatly benefit a DF collaborative network in a block fading environment.

A soccer game can be seen as a confrontation between two teams of agents where each player, communicating with his teammates, try to interpret in the best way as possible the game situations, achieving its main goals. Today the most important factors in a soccer clubs life and in its coach success are the game results they achieve. They represent the success of the club and in many cases the coachs future. Because of that club coaches usually use automated tools to measure their teams performance all over a soccer competition. Based only in Cartesian coordinates and in a sequential time frame analysis, this research work presents an automatic tool capable to calculate many technical aspects in a soccer match. For the validation tool process, games of simulation 2d RoboCup international competition were used. The results achieved were quite satisfactory. In what concerns to the set of statistics collected more than 92% of the total events were detected and only for the shot event this number dropped to between 74% and 85%. The future work will be concerned in incorporating this project with a real time tracking system and increasing the number of technical aspects calculated by the system.

In this work, the effect of substrate position on the formation of ZnO nanostructures synthesized by thermal evaporation of zinc oxide (ZnO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on silicon substrate is investigated. The multi-wall CNT powder made by chemical vapor deposition was mixed with ZnO powder with a molar ratio of 1:1. The source material was put into the middle of chamber while Si substrates were placed at various locations from the center to the end of the tube furnace. The evaporation took place at 950℃ and 2 Torr under argon gas flow rate of 500 seem and the system was vented at this temperature at the end of process. Structural characterization by scanning electron microscopy showed that ZnO tetrapod-like structures are formed in samples at different positions but they have different densities, sizes and morphologies. The density and size of ZnO nanotetrapods are found to decrease as the distance from source powder increases and substrate temperature decreases. In addition, considerable carbon content and high crystallinity of wurtzite ZnO nanostructure were observed by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry and X-ray diffraction. Moreover, ZnO nanostructures have a wide blue-green luminescent band between 380 and 600 nm.

In this paper, we investigate the optimal power allocation scheme for relay networks with finite-alphabet constraints. It has been shown that the previous work utilizing various design criteria with the Gaussian inputs assumption may lead to significant loss for a practical system with finite constellation set constraint, especially when signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is in medium-to-high regions, or when the channel coding rate is medium to high. An optimal power allocation scheme is proposed to maximize the mutual information for the relay networks under discrete-constellation input constraint. Numerical examples show that significant gain can be obtained compared to the conventional counterpart for nonfading channels and fading channels. At the same time, we show that the large performance gain on the mutual information will also represent the large gain on the bit-error rate (BER), i.e., the benefit of the power allocation scheme predicted by the mutual information can indeed be harvested and can provide considerable performance gain in a practical system.

The Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) is a mathematical procedure that stands at the center of the processing that takes place inside a digital Signal Processor. It has been known and argued through the literatures that the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is useless in detecting a specific frequency in a monitored signal because most of the computed results are ignored. In this paper we will present an efficient FFT based method to detect specific frequencies in a monitored signal which is compared to the most frequently used method ¿the Goertzel's Algorithm¿. Parallel implementation structure show a fast computation method compared to the Goertzel's algorithm. Computational speedup gains of r using radix-r butterfly are shown.

This work presents KUCAS (Known User Continuous Authentication system), a work-in-progress security system, that has a continuous authentication mechanism of users in software application. The KUCAS system makes use of environmental context information, users behavior analysis, the behavior theories of Skinner and the Mathematical Confidence of Dempster-Shafer Evidences Theory, that establishes trust levels to authenticate the user by his behavior analysis, during an application software, in a specific domain of the computer networks, in a period of time. The dynamics of enclosed management in this system compares the current behavior with the user's previous behaviors description and with the trust restrictions. In case of indications of changes in the user's behavior, the system provides the behavior analysis of the user using database restrictions information. If there are uncertainties and divergences, mechanisms of security and alert signals are triggered.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is temporarily formed, operated and managed by the nodes themselves. In a complex WSN, malicious nodes are well disguised, and they can attack the entire network on specific purpose by utilizing the natural cooperation of nodes. The error-prone characteristic of sensor nodes can also cause instability in WSN. Therefore, how to choose one or more suitable sensor nodes to collaborate towards a better system performance is a critical issue. In this paper, we construct a new trust model for WSNs based on the trust mechanism in human society. Based on this trust model, we propose a novel power-aware and reliable scheme for sensor selection (PRS). The remaining energy of a node can be considered as an important restrictive factor for the proposed scheme. Simulation results show that PRS scheme can improve the system stability, defend against the attacks of malicious nodes, and prolong the lifetime of WSNs, effectively. © 2010 Academy Publisher.
