An optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) is an instrument that used to measure parameters such as attenuation, length, connectors and splice losses, reflectance level and locating faults in an optical link. The measurement results are saved in OTDR and then transfer into computer for further analysis by using computerbased emulation software for performing more OTDR trace processing. In this paper, we proposed and demonstrated a new in-line monitoring and testing system based on Line Monitoring Device (LMD) and Centralized Failure Detection system (CFDS) for transmission surveillance and failure detection without affecting the transmission in an optical access network. LMD is passive device for optical signals tapping purpose;meanwhile CFDS is a centralized monitoring and troubleshooting solution with the GUI processing in MATLAB software. The LMD network will be analysis through both programs by means of OTDR installed software and our CFDS. The results are eventually compared and show both are reliable with the second is able to be extended for further analysis. Any fiber failure or breakdown occurs in the network will be determined by CFDS while the LMD is used to determine sharply the point of failure before it is been repaired. The proposed systems are able to improve the service reliability and reduce the repairing cost and time.

Experimental skin reflectance measurement setup is presented to acquire skin color signals under different illuminant conditions directly by an image sensor. To obtain stimulus of varying illuminant conditions an adjustable RGB light source is used. Skin color modeling is an important step for efficient skin color image segmentation, which plays an important role when defining regions of interest in image sequence for a successful hand tracking and gesture recognition within spatially defined vision based interaction. To improve detection accuracy of pixel based skin color segmentation a parametric skin color model can be used, which is able to adapt different illuminant conditions. Therefore skin reflectance under different illuminants plays an important role to obtain such a model. Experimental results of hand skin reflectance measurements within chromaticity space are shown.

The rapidly aging society in Japan has resulted in an increased demand for electric wheelchairs to enhance the mobility of elderly persons. However, the increased use of electric wheelchairs means an increase in the number of accidents related to wheelchair operation errors. The majority of errors involve the joystick interface because its controllability is highly sensitive and not very intuitive compared to the vehicle-type interface. This paper describes a newly developed intuitive electric wheelchair interface that uses a laser pointer. The direction of the laser pointer is automatically detected by camera and analyzed for movement direction. To ensure smooth driving by using the laser pointer, we apply fuzzy logic. To confirm the proposed method, several simulations were conducted and examined.

“digital holography for 3D and 4D real-world objects' capture, processing, and display” (acronym “Real 3D”) is a research project funded under the Information and Communication Technologies theme of the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme, and brings together nine participants from academia and industry (see ***). This three-year project marks the beginning a long-term effort to facilitate the entry of a new technology (digital holography) into the three-dimensional capture and display markets. This paper reports on the first steps taken in search of a solution that uses public video streams available on the Internet to address the increasing need for monitoring transportation networks with the intent of returning added value to the community, either by allowing a better understanding of the network and its needs or by feeding applications with real-time information for various purposes, such as simulation, decision-making support and updated route guidance. After the introduction of the field, we present our findings from a survey that briefly describes several works with related studies and explain the algorithms that can be adopted to get relevant information from video streams. This is followed by an analysis of the issues that may arise and the best ways to address them. Next it reports on the results achieved so far, draws some conclusions on what has been done and suggests the next steps of our research.

In this paper we describe a low cost embedded system for eye movement tracking that supports disabled persons with basic interaction with Bluetooth enabled electronic devices. The method is based on tracking the EOG potential. The device has a built-in 32-bit RISC processor that performs acquisition of multichannel differential EOG signals and signal recognition. Signal recognition is based on cross correlation principle where a simplified triangulated linear model for eye movement is used as a reference signal. The eye movement recognition is more or less user independent, but it takes some time and practice to become familiar with the system for efficient use. The embedded eye movement tracking device communicates with other devices via personal network, which is based on Bluetooth wireless technology. The communication protocol at the application level has been simplified in order to gain plain integration with other devices.

Progressive use of Web based information retrieval systems such as general purpose search engines and dynamic nature of the Web make it necessary to continually maintain Web based information retrieval systems. Crawlers facilitate this process by following hyperlinks in Web pages to automatically download new and updated Web pages. Freshness (recency) is one of the important maintaining factors of Web search engine crawlers that takes weeks to months. Many large Web crawlers start from seed pages, fetch every links from them, and continually repeat this process without any policies that help them to better crawling and improving performance of those. We believe that data mining techniques can help us to improve the freshness parameter by extracting knowledge from crawling data. In this paper we propose a Web crawler that uses extracted knowledge by data mining techniques as policies for crawling. For this purpose we include a component to collect additional crawling information. This crawler starts by non-preferential crawling. After a few crawling, it trained by using mining techniques on crawling data and then uses policies for preferential crawling to improve freshness time. Our research represented that crawling with determined polices has better freshness than generic general purpose Web crawlers.

A method for improving the watermark extraction performance of the digital watermarking based on the modification of image pixels is proposed in this paper. By embedding the watermark in the chrominance channel and using the Weiner filter with 3times3 window size in the watermark extraction process, the accuracy of the extracted watermark can be improved. Sets of experiment are carried out to prove our proposed concept. The results obtained show that the improved performance in term of NC, compared to the previous method, is achieved by using our proposed watermarking method. The improved robustness of the proposed method against various common imaging processing based attacks is also presented and discussed.
