This paper addresses the problem of coverage control of a network of mobile sensors. In the current literature, this is commonly formulated as a locational optimization problem under the assumption that sensing performance is independent of the locations of sensors. We extend this work to a more general framework where the sensor model is location-dependent. We propose a distributed control law and coordination algorithm. If the global sensing performance function is known a priori, we prove that the algorithm is guaranteed to converge. To validate this algorithm, we conduct experiments with indoor and outdoor deployments of Cyclops cameras and model its sensing performance. This model is used to simulate deployments on 1D pathways and study the coverage obtained. We also examine the coverage in the case when the global sensing function is not known and is estimated in an online fashion.

computer clusters have become a main stream of high performance computing platforms. Multilevel computing engines are spanned across acceleration boards, multicore processors, multiprocessor boards, and computer clusters. Multicore technology have played major role in increasing density of parallel computing elements. To harvest these high performance systems, cluster operating environment has pressed on additional abstraction using virtualization technology. Specific problem solving environments are isolated at the operating system level where real executions are performed in virtualization domain. Virtualization technology helps not only increasing utilization of computing resources but also reducing configuration workload, administrative cost, application porting and energy saving. Multiple commodity operating systems are allowed to share conventional hardware in a safe environment. In this work, we investigate an implementation of virtualized computing cluster. Performance evaluation results of the virtualized cluster based on HPL is shown where the maximum of 20% performance degradation from virtualization overhead is observed. We describe straightforward approach to deploy virtualization onto the cluster. The management of virtualization images is discussed. The process of considering computational cluster resources in virtualization environment is described. The goal of this work is to show the virtualized resources running with production of virtual cluster environment.

In this paper, adaptive neural fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and fuzzy subtractive clustering method (FSCM) were used to solve non-linearity, trajectory, and interaction problems of twin rotor MIMO system (TRMS). Basically, four fuzzy logic controllers (FLC) have been proposed to match the control objectives on TRMS. The four FLCs are considered as high consumers of memory and processing time relatively. New developed controllers are extracted to cope with these problems with less memory and time. Learning data were extracted from training the used conventional FLCs. Simulation results under MATLAB/Simulinkreg proved the improvement of response and simplicity of controller.

The application of geographic information technology to coastal geomorphology

With the development of modern oceanic observation technologies, coastal survey data have been experiencing a substantial growth. The integration management of the data from different disciplines, different sources and different formats has become a major research field in coastal geomorphology by using Geographic Information system （GIS）. This paper puts forward a new methodology framework of GIS techniques in coastal ocean geomorphology, including data acquisition, process, analysis, and representation. It focuses on some major GIS techniques to study the land-ocean interaction mechanism, such as spatial analysis, submarine topography model and three-dimension （3D） visualization, and apply its result to coastal urban planning, harbor site selection and geomorphology environment about coral reef and islands on the continental shelf. The case studies cover the whole coastal ocean to serve the social community, economical development and diplomatic rights for decision-making all round in the coastal zone. The research shows clearly that the application of coastal multi-source geospatial platform has changed the traditional coastal geomorphology science dramatically from its research scope, fields and methods, however, as made clear in this paper, extracting accurate information from remote sensing data and GIS databases for coastal geomorphological applications is a nontrivial challenge that requires the combined knowledge and skills of information scientists and geomorphologists.

The paper presents a joint state and unmeasured input estimation technique for a special class of nonlinear second order macroscopic traffic model. The freeway traffic system is transformed into a quasi and affine approximate Lin- ear Parameter Varying (LPV) form. Observer design technique is formulated using off-line optimization problem subjected to Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) conditions, considering uncertain scheduling parameters. Furthermore, locally designed state estimators are interconnected to cover multiple freeway sections. The elaborated method is validated using real traffic measurements. © 2009 EUCA.

This paper addresses the problem of robust stability of discrete-time switched systems with time-varying delays and polytopic uncertainties. It is supposed that the switched systems are composed of both stable and unstable subsystems. Delay-dependent sufficient conditions for robust exponential stability are proposed by employing parameter-dependent piecewise Lyapunov-like functional combined with the free-weighting matrix and average dwell time methods. These sufficient conditions are applied in the study of stability analysis for a network-based reliable control system with controller failures, and the effectiveness of the analysis procedure is demonstrated with numerical simulation on network-based reliable control of cart-pendulum.

In this work, an array of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensors is fabricated on a single quartz crystal substrate and attached with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) micro chamber for using in flow-injection system. The Cr/Au electrode array is deposited on both side of quartz substrate by sputtering through electroplated microshadow mask. PDMS micro chamber was fabricated by mold casting technique with SU-8 mold. Fabricated PDMS micro chamber and QCM sensor array were attached together for using in flow-injection system. In our experiment, the QCM electrodes were coated with the carboxylic poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-COOH) and then the carboxylic group was activated with carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxylsuccinimide (NHS) for protein binding. The scanning electron micrograph shown the trapped protein on the modified sensing layer, it confirmed that our QCM sensor and PDMS micro chamber can be used as QCM biosensor array. This new QCM sensor array provide possibility of multiple detection in small amount of sample within a single quartz crystal substrate that avoid the error signal from the different properties of each sensor in an array.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach for recognizing facial expressions based on using an active appearance model facial feature tracking system with the quadratic deformation model representations of facial expressions. Thirty seven facial feature points are tracked based on the MPEG-4 facial animation parameters layout. The proposed approach relies on the Euclidean distance measures between the tracked feature points and the reference deformed facial feature points of the six main expressions (smile, sad, fear, disgust, surprise, and anger). An evaluation of 30 model subjects, selected randomly from the Cohn-Kanade database, was carried out. Results show that the main six facial expressions can successfully be recognized with an overall recognition accuracy of 89%. The proposed approach yields to promising recognition rates and can be used in real time applications.

In the business world, financial institutions, like banks and investment firms, heavily rely on technology to manipulate daily operations and support business. Many more business processes have now become automated and require procedures to be approved. For example, when providing business services liked personal / corporate loans, mortgage, or Letter of Credit (LC), a customer is required to submit information within their applications; whereas, the service provider has to perform complicated approval procedures, involving different departments or even external parties. In this paper, we discuss how a credit approval system (CAS) handles the workflow of such business processes. The system is extensible to contemporary technologies including business process execution language (BPEL), asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX), and Java server face (JSF) in order to coordinate related parties through the Internet as well as to facilitate the operations and communications with different levels of staff in the Intranet. Our experiences and design characteristics will be further implemented into a system designed for a global financial firm.

This paper proposes a networked embedded computing platform for wearable telemedicine especially devised to obtain an objective, accurate and non-invasive assessment of physical activity. The platform here proposed realizes a tradeoff between feasibility and accuracy of the measurements. The proposed platform can be easily used by both athletes and researchers/clinicians interested in the assessment of people physical performance.
