This paper reports a study about system response time (SRT) in communication robots that utilize human-like social features, such as anthropomorphic appearance and conversation in natural language. Our research purpose established a design guideline for SRT in communication robots. The first experiment observed user preferences toward different SRTs in interaction with a robot. In other existing user interfaces, faster response is usually preferred. In contrast, our experimental result indicated that user preference for SRT in a communication robot is highest at one second, and user preference ratings level off at two seconds. However, a robot cannot always respond in such a short time as one or two seconds. Thus, the important question is "What should a robot do if it cannot respond quickly enough?" The second experiment tested the effectiveness of a conversational filler: behavior to notify listeners that the robot is going to respond. In Japanese "etto" is used to buy time to think and resembles "well..." and "uh..." In English. We used the same strategy in a communication robot to shadow system response time. Our results indicated that using a conversational filler by the robot moderated the user's impression toward a long SRT. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Although there are many developed expert systems in the world, little consideration has been given to the impacts resulting from their use. There is a difference between the developed expert systems in the laboratories for research and demonstration and the expert systems that can be applied in the fields. The applied expert systems must cover the end users requirements and meet some other evaluation criteria. ESs are evaluated both in the laboratory and in the fields. In the laboratory evaluation, there is an evaluation methodology to guarantee that the ES can be used in the field. The field evaluation is achieved by applying field experiments. Those field experiments showed that fields managed by the ES are better than the control fields. In this paper, the evaluation criteria that guarantee the success of ESs deployed in the fields are presented. These evaluation criteria have been applied on three ES applications, namely: CITEX for citrus cultivation, CUPTEX for cucumber cultivation under plastic tunnel, and NEPER for wheat cultivation. Expert systems potentially have several different types or categories of impact relative to the applied domain. The field experiments are used to evaluate the economical and environmental impacts of the ES. The economical impact includes the cost, profit, and yield. The environmental impact includes the effect of using the ES on water and soil conservation, and also on decreasing the amount of pesticides used in the fields.

The problem of task apportionment for dynamic multi-factor systems is categorized in three different scenarios in this paper: admin, crew and factor based. The system is discussed based on the realistic manufacturing environments as an application platform in order to consider the robust Task Apportionment system for such a case but the proposed system can be generalized to any similar system. Both centralized and decentralized systems are considered and task allocation, re-allocation, exchange and execution as layers of task apportionment methods are designed and described in each system. The system may switch between modes according the feedback information of communication capabilities or uses different modes for each part of the platform.

In this paper, we propose the basic framework of point- wise topological logic on completely distributive lattices and explore approximate reasoning in it. The logic of this paper is based on pointwise characterization, therefore the pointwise conception is pervasive. We explore approximate reasoning in abstract logical framework Fl on completely distributive lattice L. We propose the structure of point- wise topological logic F TL , the structure of matching function sigma. and the structure of matching neighborhood group. We investigate approximate reasoning in pointwise topological logic F TL with matching function sigma, develop pointwise topological algorithm of simple approximate reasoning, introduce the essential characteristics of this scheme.

Rough set theory and formal concept analysis were invented by Pawlak and Wille in the 1980s and have been applied successfully in several domains. In this paper, we propose a new case-based classifier system based on an integrated rough set theory and formal concept analysis technique. We focus on the construction of a better knowledge base to produce the classification rules. Our system employs rough set theory to discover reduced cases. We then formulate a knowledge base with hierarchical structure by using formal concept analysis. The result is a concept lattice knowledge base embedded in our case-based classifier. We can generate classification rules from implications and subconcept-superconcept relations inside the obtained concept lattice. An illustrative example and a case study are provided to demonstrate the feasibility and applicability of our system. The advantages of our system are thus a better knowledge base for new problem classification and the flexibility to learn new rules.

This article gives a capsule view of research on rough set theory and applications ongoing at universities and laboratories in China. Included in this capsule view of rough set research is a brief description of the following things: Chinese research groups on rough set with their URLs for web pages, names of principal researchers (supervisors), numbers of graduate students, and topics being investigated. Statistical summaries showing the growth in the research on rough set theory and application in China are included. In addition, an introduction summarizing the research interests of Chinese researchers is included in this article. Flagellar swimming is one of the swimming methods used by micro-organisms to advance in aquatic environment. The undulating motion of the flagella was successfully imitated to create propulsion for a medical swimming micro robot. The influence of a head section on the performance of such a robot is shown analytically. Swimming experiments demonstrate forward and backward swimming of a novel magnetically driven swimming tail. We intend to use the flagellar swimming tail in a three tail configuration for neurosurgical intervention in the ventricular system.

An intrusion detection system's main goal is to classify activities of a system into two major categories: normal and suspicious (intrusive) activities. Intrusion detection systems usually specify the type of attack or classify activities in some specific groups. The objective of this paper is to incorporate several soft computing techniques into the classifying system to detect and classify intrusions from normal behaviors based on the attack type in a computer network. Among the several soft computing paradigms, neuro-fuzzy networks, fuzzy inference approach and genetic algorithms are investigated in this work. A set of parallel neuro-fuzzy classifiers are used to do an initial classification. The fuzzy inference system would then be based on the outputs of neuro-fuzzy classifiers, making final decision of whether the current activity is normal or intrusive. Finally, in order to attain the best result, genetic algorithm optimizes the structure of our fuzzy decision engine. The experiments and evaluations of the proposed method were performed with the KDD Cup 99 intrusion detection dataset. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A considerable amount of research has been done on the use of logarithmic quantizers for networked feedback control systems. However, most results are developed for the case of a single quantizer (either measurement or control signal quantization). In this paper, we investigate the case of simultaneous input and output quantization for SISO linear output feedback systems. Firstly, we show that the problem of quadratic stabilization via quantized feedback can be addressed with no conservativeness by means of the sector bound approach. Secondly, we provide a bound on the maximal admissible sector bound via a scaled H ¿ optimization problem.

Observations of the long-term geoelectric potential (LTGP) difference are presented in this paper. The data have been collected during a three-year (2004-2006) investigating period. Moreover, this paper constitutes a continuation of two previously published works with eleven-year (1993-2003) experimental data. For data logging purposes, an automatic system for collection, transfer and processing of geoelectric measurements operates at the Seismological laboratory of the University of Patras. The analysis of these data using Lyapunov exponents and Takens estimator confirm their quite chaotic behavior. The Lyapunov exponents have also been calculated for short periods of twenty days, i.e. ten days before and ten days after the earthquakes occurred during this three-year period. By thorough examination of the resulting Lyapunov spectrums, it seems that these are subject to possible changes prior to an earthquake. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.
