Trusted platform model (TPM) is special-purpose integrated circuits built into a variety of platforms to enable strong user authentication and machine attestation-essential to prevent inappropriate access to confidential and sensitive information and to protect against compromised networks. As a necessary component for multifarious platforms, storage device keeps on a mass of data including confidential and secretive information. How to ensure data not to be accessed by unauthorized users effectively, and to guarantee information to be in safe and secure state? Aiming at these problems, we put forward a novel scheme for protecting data on personal computer platform. By combing trusted computing platform, we propose a secure and reliable model for user authentication and data encryption. The model uses storage protocol to establish a password system to encrypt data, and uses TPM to authenticate different users. We also implement this model by adding it into trusted computing platform. The enhanced platform can not only encrypt data per sector drastically, but also exclude those who can't be authenticated. Some external software attacks and physical theft also cut no ice.

Land surface evapotranspiration (LET) from typical river basins in China in the years 1991, 1995 and 1999, was modelled with a quantitative remote sensing method, which is based on a modified version of the Surface Energy Balance system (SEBS) model. LET simulations were conducted on several river basins, and validations demonstrated good agreement with observational data on all basins, except the Yellow River. In the Yangtze River basin for example, the study analysed the change in LET corresponding to landuse and land cover change from 1991 to 1999. Results showed that the average LET decreased when paddy fields, dry land, grassland, and built-up lands were transformed to other land cover types, and increased when forest land was transformed to dry land and grassland. Recent research trends focus on how multiscale biomedical information can be modeled and transformed into knowledge, in order to lead to a less interfering but also more individualized diagnosis and therapy. In order to assess the clinical importance of models of human pathology (e.g. cancer), it is necessary to validate them with prior and post treatment clinical data which in turn requires the determination of the tumor size and shape with high resolution, accuracy and precision, as well as structural and physiological information. This paper discusses some of the most important image analysis challenges in order to define an optimal method for extracting more accurate and precise anatomical and functional information related to the underlying pathology, which can be used for initializing and validating models of pathophysiology as well as simulations/predictions of the response to therapeutical regimes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

The DAQ/HLT system of the ATLAS experiment at CERN, Switzerland, is being commissioned for first collisions in 2009. Presently, the system is composed of an already very large farm of computers that accounts for about one-third of its final event processing capacity. Event selection is conducted in two steps after the hardware-based Level-1 Trigger: a Level-2 Trigger processes detector data based on regions of interest (RoI) and an Event Filter operates on the full event data assembled by the Event Building system. The detector read out is fully commissioned and can be operated at its full design capacity. This places the responsibility on the High-Level Triggers system to select only events of highest physics interest that will finally reach the offline reconstruction farms. This paper brings an overview of the current ATLAS DAQ/HLT implementation and performance based on studies originated from its operation with simulated, cosmic particles and first-beam data. There have been many attempts to represent music using a wide variety of different music visualisation schemes. In this paper, we propose a novel system architecture which combines Max/MSPtrade with Flashtrade that can be used to build real-time music visualisations rapidly. In addition, we have used this proposed architecture to develop a music visualisation scheme that uses individual notes from a MIDI keyboard or from a standard MIDI file and creates novel displays that reflect pitch, note duration, characteristics such as how hard a key is struck, and which instruments are playing at any one time. The proposed music visualization scheme is a first step towards developing a music visualization that alone can provide a sense of musical experience to the user.

The Vertical Offshore Reference Frame (VORF) is a project tasked to integrate all vertical datums and reference surfaces used in the UK and Eire;particularly the sea datums used as the basis for marine charting, the land datums used for expressing height above sea level, and the reference frame used for GPS/GNSS positioning. The project was commissioned by the UK Hydrographic Office in October 2005, the solution was designed and implemented by the department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic engineering, University College London. VORF consists of a set of surfaces (Chart Datum, lowest astronomical tide, mean low water springs, mean sea level, mean high water springs and highest astronomical tide) modelled as a grid of heights above the GRS80 ellipsoid referenced to both ETRF89 and ITRF2000, and estimated at the epoch 2000.0. The surfaces were computed using a combination of a new GRACE-based UK and Eire gravity field, multi-mission satellite altimetry data, long term tide gauge observations, historical and current Admiralty tide gauge data, GPS observations and levelling networks. Grid post spacing is at the level of 1 km. The paper will describe the data sources and surface computation methods, as well as the resulting surface accuracies. One of the key drivers behind the development of VORF is that it enables GPS/GNSS observations of ship position and height to be used directly in hydrographic surveying without recourse to shore-based observations of the tide. Initial sea trials of VORF show that a bathymetric survey processed using VORF and GPS heighting is consistent with the traditional data reduction method using a shore deployed tide gauge. The test showed no significant bias and a scatter of 7-9 cm between the two surveys. The key significance here is that the VORF-enabled survey required no shore-deployed assets and could have been conducted in real-time saving significant amounts of money, simplifying the operation and reducing the latency in delivery

The switched reluctance motor (SRM) and drive system is a candidate in various applications including the home appliance. The simple and low cost system with an adequate performance is also one topic to be developed. A speed sensor directly increases the cost and it directly influences the reliability of the system. This paper proposes a simplified variable speed control system for the SRM without using an encoder. The method is not based on the exact rotor position estimation, only the turn off angle is determined from the simple relation between measured terminal voltage and current. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the experimental result on the 3 kW 3-phase 6-stator-pole and 4-rotor-pole SRM.

We have developed scanning laser range sensor called "SOKUIKI" sensor which is ultra-small scanning laser range sensor adopted for various types of mobile robots as we have already published. As a sensor for environment recognition, we thought the sensor must have not only outputting distance data but also another helpful function for mobile robots. So it was considered that what kind of advanced functions should be provided to SOKUIKI sensor. As a result two most important purposes were acquired. 1. Variation on its distance data and method to get the data. 2. The function for prevention of optical interference between sensors. These rolls were installed to the sensor, and confirmed their effect. This paper describes its result and proposes Sensor Communication Interface Protocol (SCIP) which is developed as new command system just for SOKUIKI sensor. © 2006 IEEE.
