A new robust adaptive control design synthesis, which employs both high-order neural networks and math-analytical results, for a class of complex nonlinear mechatronic systems possessing similarity property has been derived. This approach makes an adequate use of the structural feature of composite similarity systems and neural networks to resolve the representation issue of uncertainty interconnections and subsystem gains by on-line updating the weights. This synthesis does guarantee the real stability in closed-loop but requires skills to obtain larger attraction domains. In this paper, we develop a novel digital-shot system for sensing the throwing force information of shot-put athletes in real time. The digital-shot has been designed and manufactured with the same external dimensions and weight as the normal shot for open females. The three axes integrated accelerometer, as a crucial device in the force sensing system, can acquire the kinetics data along three orthogonal directions with reasonably high accuracy. By using the method of wavelet transformation, the characteristics of acceleration signals during the shot-put period can be extracted. Artificial neural network is adopted to recognise the movement pattern in different phases of shot throwing. For supplying more effective training instruction, with the help of six axes ground reaction force measuring apparatus, high-speed photography and surface electromyographic signal remote measuring device etc, an integrated platform of shot-put athlete biomechanical information acquisition is constructed. Based on the fusion of multi-targets and multi-parameters information, the shot-put athletes coaching system is proposed, which not only can supply constructive guidance for athletes to improve their skills, but also provide a new research platform of motion human modeling.

The paper presents the e-learning project and the work until now developed for extending the features of the Italian remote laboratory "G. Savastano" to the academic circles of East Europe, Western Balkan and Mediterranean area. In particular, in the framework of the project "Italian-Croatian remote laboratory distributed on geographic network", the Italian-Croatian collaboration is highlighted. The proposed approach follows EU efforts to implement internal lifelong learning program and influence educational systems of EU partners and neighbor Countries while helping them to overcome problems with their own educational systems and lack of resources. Developed experiments, included in the remote laboratory, give the possibility of achieving practical experience on several fields, while multilingual approach gives the access to such facility to the students coming from different countries. Moreover, the idea of interactively controlled transfer of knowledge and experience offers new opportunities to the remote experiments enabling them to be executed without supervising necessity

Objectives A preliminary study to investigate which of the recommended airline exercises for DVT prevention produce optimal calf muscle pump activity. Methods Four subjects were instructed to carry out ten lower leg exercises based on those recommended by airlines for DVT prevention. An EMG sensor was used to record calf muscle activity and a motion analysis system was used to ensure the exercise was conducted correctly. Results Statistical analysis showed significant differences in the level of calf muscle pump activity induced by the different exercises. Heel rise foot pumps were shown to induce highest levels of activity while many exercises did not induce any significant calf muscle activity at all. Conclusion These findings indicate that a further, more detailed examination of the exercises recommended to passengers for DVT prevention on long distance flights should be conducted to determine the potential benefit to the health and safety of the passenger.

In this paper, an estimation of the Gaussian noise variance based on observed (measured) maximums of subsets of samples is given. Circumstances of the measurement environment being limited, only maximums of subsets of samples are available and the non-constant variance of the Gaussian noise can be estimated. In the case of power line noise, the variance of the zero mean Gaussian noise is a periodic function of the a-priory known parameterization. Variance function parameters estimation is computed in two steps, first the estimation formula of the constant variance Gaussian noise is applied to a certain subset of samples and second, the least mean square criterion (LMS) is applied to fit the parametrized variance function to estimated variances. The Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) criterion is applied to derive estimators of the variance function parameters. Beside that, the quotient of the variance of the zero mean Gaussian noise and its maximums is evolved explicitly. Experimental results on real and simulated data are given to demonstrate their accuracy.

This paper presents an integrated power system for low-power wireless sensor networks with dynamic efficiency optimization technique. By adaptively resizing power transistors and adjusting switching frequency, system efficiency is enhanced significantly. Theoretical analysis is elaborated to support the proposed technique. A prototype integrated power system for self-powered photovoltaic wireless sensing node was designed and simulated with TSMC 0.35μm CMOS process. With a power range of 0.5μW to 10mW, power efficiency stays above 71%. Tolerance between theoretical and simulated optimal power transistor sizes is less than 6.7%, while that of optimal switching frequencies is less than 5%. The paper gives another solution to minimizing system power in the perspective of power processing. Copyright 2005 ACM.
