In this paper, a cluster-based framework is introduced for comparing analysis methods of functional magnetic resonance images (fMRI). In the proposed framework, fMRI data is replaced with a feature space and each method considered as a clustering method in the new space. As a result, different methods can be compared by means of a cluster validity measure. The feature space is computed using a non-parametric method (principal component analysis-PCA). Four subjects have been analyzed with three methods and the proposed cluster-based framework has evaluated performance of the methods. The results are identical to those of the modified receiver operating characteristics (ROC). This validates the proposed approach.

Automatic segmentation of brain tissues is crucial to many medical imaging applications. We use a multi-resolution analysis and a power transform to extend the well-known Gaussian mixture model expectation maximization based algorithm for segmentation of white matter, gray matter, and cerebrospinal fluid from T1-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the brain. Experimental results with near 4000 synthetic and real images are included. The results illustrate that the proposed method outperforms six existing methods.

Magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) is a non-invasive technique for assessing biochemical fingerprint of tissue composition. The need to differentiate between normal and abnormal tissues and determine type of abnormality before biopsy or surgery motivated development and application of MRSI. There are several technical reasons that make the brain easier than other organs to be examined with MRSI. This work presents our proposed methods and results for the analysis of the brain spectra of patients with three tumor types (malignant glioma, astrocytoma, and oligodendroglioma). After extracting features from MRSI data using wavelet and wavelet packets, we use artificial neural networks to determine the abnormal spectra and the type of abnormality. We evaluated the proposed methods using clinical and simulated MRSI data and biopsy results. The MRSI analysis results were correct 97% of the time when classifying the spectra of the clinical MRSI data into normal tissue, tumor, and radiation necrosis. They were correct 72% and 83% of the time when determining tumor types using the clinical and simulated MRSI data, respectively.

CU VOCAL is a Cantonese text-to-speech (TTS) engine. We use a syllable-based concatenative synthesis approach to generate intelligible and natural synthetic speech in Cantonese. The paper reports on our recent enhancements in CU VOCAL to support user adjustments in prosody and style with the use of the Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML) in the input text. CU VOCAL was previously developed as a SAPI-compliant engine to enable easy integration with other applications. Weather information is an excellent representation of atmospheric phenomenon. People with little or no atmospheric knowledge can understand weather forecasts and make good use of it in their daily life. Although Internet information flow does not include this system, it is essential for fitting both the technical and non-technical users. Users need to see the current traffic status of their own ISP or zone, even if some users curiously want to see other zones or the global traffic status. To fulfill this requirement for users, this paper approached a new model called the Ryuki model. In the four planes of the Ryuki model, we captured flow information from the bottom plane, estimated the flows, and introduced three mathematical indices in the second plane. The indices are Ryuki temperature, Ryuki pressure and Ryuki density. The third plane is the service plane where two types of services are introduced. And finally, the top plane represents the network status of the zone. Zone is used as an autonomous system (AS) in this document. A well-known network simulator is used in the simulation for collecting network traffic to estimate the service (QoS and CoS) related information.

A positioning technique for an endovascular microdevice propelled by magnetic force inside a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system is being developed. Positioning options are presented and a magnetic positioning technique is described in more details. Since a magnetic positioning system is deeply dependent on the quality of the measurement modality, we describe the main magnetic field measurement techniques that can be used inside an MRI. Finally, we propose a magnetic positioning system using MRI phase images to measure the magnetic distortion induced by the ferromagnetic body. Positioning results on a 1010/1020 carbon steel, 1.5875 mm diameter sphere with gradient echo phase images are presented.

Vision-based registration techniques for augmented reality systems have been the subject of intensive research recently due to their potential to accurately align virtual objects with the real world. The registration process can be done in three steps: 1) Positioning: put the virtual object at a desired position. 2) Rendering: get the 2D image of the positioned 3D virtual object 3) The rendering of the virtual object will then be merged with the image of real environment to compose an augmented image. Rendering the virtual object is not trivial work, since it not only depends on its 3D location and orientation, but also depends on the camera's location and orientation. When the camera undergoes a transformation, the parameters for rendering will also be accordingly changed. Therefore, for a realtime augmented reality system, the camera pose must be dynamically tracked at frame rate. In order to simulate the real camera, we have to know its intrinsic and extrinsic parameters. The intrinsic parameters describe camera's optical, geometric and digital characteristics. The extrinsic parameters describe position and orientation of the camera. Both intrinsic and extrinsic parameters can be estimated through a camera calibration process (for example Zonglei and Boufama's method). However, calibrating the camera in real-time, for applications similar to industry, is not necessary (for example Kutulakos & vallino's method). In this paper we present our framework based on Zonglei & Boufama's approach and we describe Kutulakos & vallino's approach (we haven't yet results).

This work presents a formal Petri net-based approach to behaviour modeling for mobile agent systems. Generic agent templates, formalized in Petri net semantics, are proposed to model the components of a distributed mobile agent system. A generic agent template is conceptualized as an entity consisting of a set of actions, a set of rules which govern the agent communications and an event that captures the agent migration. The communication rules determine the Petri net structures which act as connectors in the proposed approach. The behaviour of the mobile agent is linked to both architectural and structural specifications based on system requirements. After providing certain formal definitions we present a theoretical formal model for designing and describing the behaviour of mobile agent systems for distributed asynchronous applications. It supports formal reasoning based on Petri nets.
