In CELP coding, signal modification is often employed to improve the pitch prediction at lowest bit rates. In this paper, a signal modification method for coding purely voiced wideband speech frames is introduced. The modification is performed frame and pitch synchronously preserving the original time scale at the end of each frame, which makes the method particularly convenient for variable bit rate coding. Special attention is paid to modify only the frames which are most suitable for the signal modification and low bit rate coding. The signal modification method is applied to a variable bit rate ACELP coder that satisfies IS-95/CDMA2000 rate-set II system requirements.

Investigates development of an in-situ bioremediation process control system that can optimize the complex physical, chemical, and biological processes involved in in-situ bioremediation. A hybrid fuzzy predictive control system is constructed for real time control of in-situ bioremediation process. This control system consists of three parts: an input/output interface system, a database system and a fuzzy expert system. This control system can handle the inherent uncertainty of the bioremediation simulation model in real time.

This paper attempts to look at the fundamental problem of fault detection and isolation (FDI) in nonlinear systems. Using the idea of input reconstruction by means of dynamic inversion the authors first discuss the properties of input (or fault) observability in linear systems. The extension of the results to nonlinear systems as well as the mathematical conditions of the calculation of the inverse system, which provides the inverse in finite algorithmic steps, are given. The applicability of the inversion process to fault reconstruction in nonlinear systems is demonstrated.

Interactive visualization of large digital elevation models is of continuing interest in scientific visualization, GIS, and virtual reality applications. Taking advantage of the regular structure of grid digital elevation models, efficient hierarchical multiresolution triangulation and adaptive level-of-detail (LOD) rendering algorithms have been developed for interactive terrain visualization. Despite the higher triangle count, these approaches generally outperform mesh simplification methods that produce irregular triangulated network (TIN) based LOD representations. In this project we combine the advantage of a TIN based mesh simplification preprocess with high-performance quadtree based LOD triangulation and rendering at run-time. This approach, called QuadTIN, generates an efficient quadtree triangulation hierarchy over any irregular point set that may originate from irregular terrain sampling or from reducing oversampling in high-resolution grid digital elevation models.

In order to manage the growing amount of video information efficiently, a video scene change detection method is necessary. Many advanced video applications such as video on demand (VOD) and digital library also require the scene change detection to organize the video content. In this paper, we present an effective scene change detection method using an unsupervised segmentation algorithm and the technique of object tracking based on the results of the segmentation. Our results have shown that this method can perform not only accurate scene change detection, but also obtain object level information of the video frames, which is very useful for video content indexing and analysis.

A three-rate synchronous DS/CDMA system provides service to low, medium and high bit rate users, and all kinds of user have the same chip rate. Previously, two types of decorrelators have been proposed: a high-rate decorrelator (HRD), and a low-rate decorrelator (LRD). It has been observed that the LRD provides better performance than the HRD for all users at the expense of higher complexity and longer demodulation delay for high-rate users. To improve the performance and reduce the demodulation delay, a decorrelating decision feedback detector (DF) has been proposed. Although the DF has less complexity than that of the LRD, the complexity of DF is still high. This paper presents a blind adaptive decorrelating decision-feedback detector (BADF) which uses a bootstrap algorithm to decrease the complexity of DF and eliminates the singular-matrix problem of the decorrelator.
