The design of high-performance, high-precision, real-time digital signal processing (DSP) systems, such as those associated with wavelet signal processing, is a challenging problem. This paper reports on the innovative use of the residue number system (RNS) for implementing high-end wavelet filter banks. The disclosed system uses an enhanced index-transformation defined over Galois fields to efficiently support different wavelet filter instantiations without adding any extra cost or additional lookup tables (LUT). An exhaustive comparison against existing two's complement (2C) designs for different custom IC technologies was carried out. These structures have been demonstrated to be well suited for field programmable logic (FPL) assimilation as well as for CBIC (cell-based integrated circuit) technologies.

In this paper we describe our approach towards the second level digital techniques course suited for system-on-Chip (SoC) oriented curriculum. Due to enhanced utilization of synthesis techniques and higher level block-oriented design, new requirements for digital hardware design are set up. Our working hypothesis is that the course focus needs to be in a systematic working set based on general transformation and refinements are more important than a presentation of detailed and specific target solutions. Thus the student should master the methodology and understand the underlying principles, which will enable him or her, to utilize more effectively the advanced VHDL synthesis techniques, which are covered in the follow-up course.

system-on-Chip solid state circuits that sense, receive, transmit, and process signals are the sensors, or eyes and ears, of the medical field of the millennium. The goal and design of the system-on-Chip (SOC) program for industry will be to provide affordable, reproducible, and reliable front-end instrumentation, components and subsystems for medical systems. To process/store/analyze the signals acquired from these medical sensors, analog/digitalsystems are used to provide data fusion and information extraction. These biomedical smart sensors cover the hybrid domains of mixed-technology (electrical, mechanical, optical, thermal, biochemical) and mixed-concept (electrical, control, digital signal processing). These significant domain design differences impose robust design challenges for medical sensor technology.

This paper proposes the method of fuzzy rough sets for the recognition of Thai Characters. We divide the classification process into 2 levels, coarse and fine classification. Both levels of classification have the same processes, applying the rough set lower approximation and then using fuzzy rough sets. The difference between the two levels is in the features of the input data used for classifying. There are 40 coarse groups and some of them need not pass through the second level of classification. We trained this system with 2816 training samples, which were composed of 4 fonts and 4 sizes of characters. The system is tested with an unknown sample, which is composed of 7 fonts and 7 sizes of characters; 4 fonts and 4 sizes of the training sample are inclusive. The accuracy of this proposed system is as high as 89%.

The power/ground fluctuation is known as a significant source of radiated emission. We discuss the separated functions of on-PCB and on-chip decoupling capacitors on the suppression of electromagnetic radiated emission. Due to the different ranges of parasitic inductance and the different locations of the on-chip current drivers, on-PCB and on-chip decoupling capacitors exhibit separated frequency characteristics in terms of suppression efficiency of radiation. The roles of on-PCB and on-chip decoupling capacitors are estimated by circuit simulation and a simple antenna model, and are confirmed by experiments. It is found that the on-chip decoupling capacitors are mainly effective for the suppression of radiated emission over 100 MHz frequency. Increase of the on-chip decoupling capacitance and decrease of the parasitic inductance of the package produce an improved suppression ratio at high frequency range. Combined placement and sizing of the decoupling capacitors have achieved more than 10 dB suppression of the electromagnetic radiated emission over a wide spectrum range.

We developed a finger type blood pressure measurement system using a volume oscillometric algorithm. The digital envelope detection filter (EDF) method was applied to volume oscillometric signals which were acquired from an air-filled occlusive finger cuff. In the case of using the EDF, we could reduce the difference error and standard deviation by 30-40%.

As the system size of Beowulf-Class cluster system scales up, system administration becomes challenging due to the increased complexity of the system. The lack of powerful tools for the administrative tasks even makes the matter worse. This paper presents a proposed framework for system management of large Beowulf cluster that divided the management task into well defined layers of service. A cluster management tool called SCMS (SMILE Cluster Management system) has been developed according to this framework. SCMS provides a rich set of services and tools for large cluster administration. The current implementation of SCMS is discussed referenced to the proposed framework. The software is now freely available on the Internet.

A transmission channel used in application such as telecommunications can be modeled as a bandpass filter. Measurement of the frequency selectivity of the channel is important to ensure that the information-bearing signal has minimal distortion and loss of information. A comparison is made for several methods used for estimating the frequency selectivity of the transmission. The methods presented are the correlation method, instantaneous energy and frequency estimation and the cross Wigner-Ville distribution. The theoretical foundations and assumptions are described for each method. In general, all the methods gave similar performance in terms of the frequency selectivity. Due to the shorter analysis duration, both the instantaneous energy and frequency estimation and cross Wigner-Ville distribution is ideal for estimating the frequency selectivity of time-varying channels.
