The Power system Blockset (PSB) is a graphic tool that allows schematics and simulation of power systems to be built in the Simulink environment. The blockset uses the MATLAB/Simulink environment to represent common components and devices found in electrical power networks. Simulink's variable-step event-sensitive integration algorithms allow increased accuracy in zero-crossing detection of currents as compared with fixed step algorithms. One important feature of the Power system Blockset which has been introduced with version 2.0 is its ability to simulate either with continuous variable time-step integration algorithms or with a discretized system. For small and medium size systems, variable time steps algorithms are usually faster because the number of steps will be less than with a fixed-time step method. However, for large systems which contain many states or many nonlinear blocks such as power electronic switches, it is advantageous to discretize the electrical system. Both the continuous integration and fixed-time step methods are illustrated. The graphic interface of Simulink provides a user-friendly environment where the power circuit and control system are represented in the same diagram. The results are displayed while the simulation is running. The processing power of MATLAB allows the designer to perform complex post-processing on simulation results. This special technical session presents the features of the Power system Blockset and its applications in the simulation of power systems and power electronics systems.

We propose a wireless optical communication system with white colored LEDs for a wireless home link (WHL). The white colored LEDs have a high power output and are regarded as lamps for the next generation. In the proposed system, this device is used for a wireless home link. The proposed system is suitable for private networks such as consumer communication networks. From numerical and simulation results, it is confirmed that the proposed system is available and the problems to be solved are made clear.

Energy shaping is the essence of passivity based control (PBC), a controller design technique that is very well-known in mechanical systems. Our objectives in the article are threefold. First, to call attention to the fact that PBC does not rely on some particular structural properties of mechanical systems, but hinges on the more fundamental (and universal) property of energy balancing. Second, to identify the physical obstacles that hamper the use of "standard" PBC in applications other than mechanical systems. In particular, we show that "standard"" PBC is stymied by the presence of unbounded energy dissipation, hence it is applicable only to systems that are stabilizable with passive controllers. Third, to revisit a PBC theory that has been developed to overcome the dissipation obstacle, as well as to make the incorporation of process prior knowledge more systematic. These two important features allow us to design energy based controllers for a wide range of physical systems.

In the maintenance phase of software development, it is necessary to check that all features still perform correctly after some changes have been applied to existing software. However, it is not easy to debug the software when a defect is found in those features which have not changed during the modification, even using a regression test. Existing approaches employ program deltas to specify defects; they have the limitation of it being hard to enact them, and they don't support any actual debugging activities. Moreover, such a system is hard to introduce into an actual environment. In this paper, we propose DMET (Debugging METhod) to solve such problems. DMET supports debugging activities when a defect is found by regression tests through detection, indication and reflection procedures. We also implement DSUS (Debugging SUpporting system) based on DMET. DSUS executes DMET procedures automatically, and it is easy to configure for an existing environment. Through experimentation with DMET and DSUS, we have confirmed that DMET/DSUS reduce the debugging time of software significantly. As a result, DMET/DSUS help in evolving the software for the software maintenance aspects.

We present the system called Takealook, which personalizes information presentation according to the user's interests and knowledge. The system infers the user's interests from her/his question-and-answer interactions and the information presenters' conceptual spaces by using the related method of collaborative filtering. It then provides additional information about current contents and also recommends other related contents. The user's interests are represented by her/his own individual conceptual space (i.e., a set of related keywords) which is adapted to her/his preferences. In this paper we describe a method for personalizing the information presentation, implementating the system at reviewing an exhibition, and experimental results.

The Paderborn University BSP (PUB) library is a parallel C library based on the BSP model. The basic library supports buffered and unbuffered asynchronous communication between any pair of processors, and a mechanism for synchronizing the processors in a barrier style. In addition, it provides routines for collective communication on arbitrary subsets of processors, partition operations, and a zero-cost synchronization mechanism. Furthermore, some techniques used in its implementation deviate significantly from the techniques used in other BSP libraries.

In this paper the robust fault detection and isolation (FDI) problem in linear systems, which are subjected to multiple faults and time varying system perturbations is discussed. The detection and isolation problem is treated by using algebraic methods and geometric design concepts. The idea of the classical Luenberger observer is generalized in an attempt that residual generators for solving the robust FDI problem can be designed.

This paper presents a distributed, multi-user virtual reality testbed for a mobile robot. The main components of the testbed include user interface, networking, simulation and robot control. The user interface is implemented as a combination of a virtual environment and a standard graphical user interface (GUI). The virtual environment is developed using the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) and it corresponds to the laboratory environment where the robot is placed and tested. The standard GUI is implemented using Java Programming language. The World Wide Web (WWW) browser is used to integrate the virtual environment (embedded VRML) and the standard GUI (Java applet) in a single user interface. Users can access a dedicated WWW server and download the user interface. Networking component (communication among users and robots) is implemented using the Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) protocol. The existing robot development system has been utilized to provide simulation capabilities. A separate stand-alone Java application has been developed to communicate and control the robot using a wireless Ethernet link. In addition to user's direct control, control algorithms (e.g. fuzzy logic based) can be used to replace the user. A Nomad200 mobile robot has been used for initial measurements and evaluations of the testbed.

In this research, a new strategy of Fuzzy-Neural Network system was proposed for Thai numeral speech recognition. Instead of using the fuzzy membership input with class membership desired-output during training procedure as proposed by several researches, we used the fuzzy membership input with fundamental binary desired-output. This can reduce the misunderstood training, decrease the training time and also improve the recognition ability. The system was tested on the Thai ten-numeral speech (0-9) recognition. The error rate for speaker-independent test achieved 9.2% compared to 14% error rate of conventional neural network system while the error rate of the system using class membership desired-output is quite high because of misunderstood training. © 1998. 5th International Conference on Spoken Language Processing, ICSLP 1998. In this research, the Fuzzy-Neural Network (fuzzy-NN) model was proposed for Speaker-Independent Thai polysyllabic word recognition. Various fuzzy membership functions on linguistic properties were used to convert exact features extracted from input speech to the fuzzy membership values. The fuzzy membership values were arranged to be new input vector of Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural network. The binary desired outputs were used during training. 70 Thai words consist of ten numerals, the others were single-syllable, double-syllable and triple-syllable, 20 words in each group, were used for system evaluation. In order to improve recognition accuracy, number of syllable and tonal level detected were conducted for speech preclassification. The Pi fuzzy membership function provided the best recognition accuracy among other functions;Trapezoidal, and Triangular function. Under an optimal condition, the achieved recognition error rates were 5.6% on dependent test and 6.7% on independent test, which were respectively 3.3% and 3.4% decreasing from the conventional Neural Network system. © 1998. 5th International Conference on Spoken Language Processing, ICSLP 1998.
