The authors describe the operation of MetaSim and give an example of its use. One of MetaSim's current engines, Transim, is a convolution simulator that incorporates a robust, rapid, and accurate method for the simulation of coupled, lossy interconnect structures specified with frequency-dependent parameters. Transim solves the problem of incorporating transient circuit simulation with nonlinear devices, with transmission line simulation in the frequency domain.< >

An experimental study of the impact of delay spread on the performance of 4 PAM-FM mobile systems in a Rayleigh fading, cochannel interference (CCI) and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) environment is presented. The increase of the modulation index can improve the BER if the reflected signal power is 10 dB less than the direct signal in the two-ray fading model. A strategy which reduces the impact of delay spread even in the worst case situation is proposed. By increasing the roll-off factor of the lowpass filters and by lowering the modulation index, for a BER of 0.01, the delay spread immunity is increased 300% without the need for adaptive equalization. In the delay spread environment, CCI is not significant if it is less than -20 dB. AWGN interference is noticeable only when it is higher than -13 dB.< >

The test vectors for the synthesized design were automatically derived from the behavioral test vectors, which were used to validate the behavioral model of the design. A novel approach to wideband beamforming using FIR (finite impulse response) fan filters is presented. The method is based on two-dimensional filtering for the outputs of a linear array of sensors. To beamform in the broadside of the array, a symmetrical 90 degrees /n filter is employed. The filter in which the angle of fan is more acute can form the narrower beam over the full band while the order of the filter becomes higher. To beamform in the direction along the array, an asymmetrical 45 degrees fan filter is used. As aliasing occurs in this beamforming, the band which is available is limited a little in width. A general implementation of the FIR fan filter beamformer is given as the parallel connection of one-dimensional FIR filters.< >

A method for the path-control of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) in computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) systems that combines the flexibility and easy installation of optical methods with the simplicity and robustness of the inductive method is proposed. Using a new computing paradigm, the cellular neural network (CNN), and a related device, the VLSI CNN chip, a very high speed solution that is less expensive than the conventional methods can be achieved. This AGV control complies with the requirements of CIM systems. Further advantages of the proposed system are as follows: fault tolerance and the ability to give instructions along the path, and the use of a simple local control.< >

Kerr electro-optic field mapping measurements using the sensitive AC modulation method were made in liquid nitrogen. The steady-state electric fields between parallel stainless steel electrodes that had a gap of 7 mm are shown to be essentially uniform for voltages up to 70 kV with no significant space charge distortion. The Kerr constant B of liquid nitrogen is constant over the AC modulation frequency range of 1-20 kHz, while increasing above 20 kHz. This change of B with the modulation frequency coincides with the frequency-amplitude gain characteristic of the lock-in amplifier used, so that B is independent of the AC modulation frequency within the range of this study. B monotonically decreases with increasing temperature, T, thus decreasing liquid nitrogen density, rho , so that B is related linearly to rho /T. The polarizability anisotropy of liquid nitrogen is evaluated to be 8.3*10/sup -41/ F-m/sup 2/ from the slope of the B-( rho /T) characteristic, obtained from a simple physical model.< >

The spectral/power efficiency and performance of the pi /4-quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modems (American and Japanese digital cellular emerging standards) are studied and briefly compared to GMSK modems (proposed for European digital European Cordless Telephone system) (DECT) and Group Special Mobile system (GSM) cellular standards). Improved filtering strategies and digital pilot aided (digital channel sounding) techniques are considered for pi /4-QPSK and for other digital modems. More spectrally efficient modem trends and some research results for future cellular/mobile (land mobile) and satellite communication systems applications are also highlighted.< >
