The Multiport Array Receptor (MAR), a system which combines optical sensing with integrated focal-plane processing capabilities, is described. Its central element is a photosensor array with hexagonal tesselation and complex peripheral selection logic which provides parallel analog readout over prescribed areas. An external computing module performs real-time spatial convolution at multiple resolutions while a closed-loop microprogrammed controller addresses regions of interest and supervises communication between the camera and the host computer. This integrated image sensor and processor implements programmed sequences of instruction primitives and yields a complete state description of each processed pixel. It is capable of automatic edge tracking and returns lists of connected pixels.< >

Basic research for the micro actuator using TiNi shape memory alloy (SMA) is conducted from the crystallographic point of view. SMA (TiNi) thin film is fabricated by sputter deposition. First, the influence of substrate temperature on crystal structure is verified by measuring resistivity-temperature curve and X-ray diffraction. Though high temperature substrate conditions make TiNi film in regular crystal, an amorphous structure appears at low substrate temperature. Next optimal composition of sputtered SMA thin film is found by SSQ. The negative slope of the resistivity curve due to phase transformation between R-phase and parent phase is observed. Finally, annealing methods are examined to crystallize amorphous TiNi.< >

A precondition verification system for high-level (register-transfer-level) design transformations is described. The system can verify spatial preconditions in terms of the data path composition and topology, as well as temporal preconditions in terms of assertions on the control flow paths. The system is implemented in Prolog and incorporates a mixture of techniques including symbolic equivalence and partial evaluation to effectively verify the preconditions in the presence of arbitrarily nested data-dependent decision points (conditional and iterative constructs) in the control graph. An example which shows how the system can be used for precondition verification is presented.< >

For fast-fading digital mobile systems, a spectrally efficient technique that can achieve more than 2 bit/s/Hz with a built-in fade canceler is proposed. Recent studies show that fading in digital mobile communications can be canceled by adding redundant bits to the customer data or with pilot-based techniques. The objective is to extend this concept to a more spectrally efficient class IV quadrature partial-response signaling (QPRS) system. However, in such schemes, if the pilot is corrupted by the phase noise caused by the pilot-data interference, the fade cancellation will not effectively remove the error floor. The class IV system has an inherent advantage in that it has a spectral null at DC and a low energy content at the ends of the band. Such systems also have a higher speed tolerant. It is shown that a small bandwidth around DC can be vacated to insert the pilot. Preliminary results indicate that the residual error floor can be reduced from 10/sup -2/ to 10/sup -5/ in fast-fading channels. The improvement in bit error ratio performance of the band-vacated QPRS is compared to the unfiltered QPRS.< >

The authors proposed a hybrid method that combines the advantages of the frequency-domain techniques and the marching-on-in-time method while avoiding their disadvantages. As in the marching-on-in-time method, the time-domain integral equations are discretized in space. This results in a system of linear time-domain equations of a fixed dimension. This system, in turn, is solved by the frequency-domain procedure of subjecting it to a temporal Laplace or Fourier transformation. Using this approach, the authors solved three scalar scattering problems for which benchmark results obtained by alternative methods were available.< >

An overview is presented of results obtained in listeners with real and simulated impairments. Spectral processing is assessed by psychoacoustical tuning curves and growth-of-masking functions; temporal processing is assessed by temporal integration and gap detection thresholds. When comparisons are made to normal listeners tested in the quiet, impaired listeners generally show deficits on all these tasks. When the comparisons are made to simulated impairments, some impaired listeners show no deficits, whereas others still show deficits. These results indicate that abnormal intensity perception is responsible for some, but not all, of impaired listeners' apparent deficits in spectral and temporal processing. In many cases, however, it appears that spectral and temporal processing, per se, are altered in the impaired auditory system.< >
