Class-incremental learning poses a significant challenge under an exemplar-free constraint, leading to catastrophic forgetting and sub-par incremental accuracy. Previous attempts have focused primarily on single-modality tasks, such as image classification or audio event classification. However, in the context of Audio-Visual Class-Incremental Learning (AVCIL), the effective integration and utilization of heterogeneous modalities, with their complementary and enhancing characteristics, remains largely unexplored. To bridge this gap, we propose the Multi-Modal Analytic Learning (MMAL) framework, an exemplar-free solution for AVCIL that employs a closed-form, linear approach. To be specific, MMAL introduces a modality fusion module that re-formulates the AVCIL problem through a Recursive Least-Square (RLS) perspective. Complementing this, a Modality-Specific Knowledge Compensation (MSKC) module is designed to further alleviate the under-fitting limitation intrinsic to analytic learning by harnessing individual knowledge from audio and visual modality in tandem. Comprehensive experimental comparisons with existing methods show that our proposed MMAL demonstrates superior performance with the accuracy of 76.71%, 78.98%, and 76.19% on AVE, Kinetics-Sounds, and VGGSounds100 datasets, respectively, setting new state-of-the-art AVCIL performance. Notably, compared to those memory-based methods, our MMAL, being an exemplar-free approach, provides good data privacy and can better leverage multi-modal information for improved incremental accuracy. © 2024 ACM.

Decomposition offers the potential to reduce the complexity of model-based optimization, prediction, control and diagnosis by accounting for the structure and sparsity of the describing model. Motivated by this fact, a rich and powerful collection of decomposition methods are available for model based diagnosis of large-scale complex dynamic systems, too. At the same time, one usually does not have enough information about a large-scale complex dynamic system to construct its precise enough model, so a kind of qualitative dynamic model is often used for the diagnosis [1]. Two structural decomposition based qualitative diagnostic methods are presented in this lecture, together with their component-driven system decomposition ***, a model-based diagnostic method is described that is able to detect and isolate non-technical losses (illegal loads) in low voltage electrical grids of one transformer area [2]. As a preliminary off-line step of the diagnosis, a powerful electrical decomposition method is proposed, which breaks down the overall network to subsystems with one feeder layout enabling to make the necessary computations efficient. The diagnostic method is based on analyzing the differences between the measured and model-predicted voltages. The uncertainty in the model parameters together with the measurement uncertainties are also taken into account to make the approach applicable in real-world cases. The proposed method is able to detect and localize multiple illegal loads, and the amount of the illegal consumption can also be *** a second case study, a high level decomposition approach for process system fault diagnosis using event traces is given [3], [4]. Using a simple component graph model behind the process system and the measured trace applied for the diagnosis, the method can find the root cause(s) of propagating failures between separate components. This article introduces a comprehensive approach for designing and analyzing signal integrity in heterogeneous integrated systems that incorporate neuromorphic Darwin chips. The proposed integrated system architecture includes a neuromorphic Darwin chip, digital signal processing unit, microcontroller unit, field programmable gate arrays, and coding and decoding modules to encode and reconstruct analog spiking signals. The study evaluates the encoding module and the heterogeneous integration structure and conducts signal integrity analysis. To achieve optimal signal integrity performance, the article proposes a novel binocular eye diagram analysis technique. This innovative approach guides the encoding algorithm modification and improves the overall system performance. This research is the first to combine joint field-circuit simulation, heterogeneous integration modeling, and signal integrity analysis of the Darwin neuromorphic chip, and it is expected to serve as a valuable reference for future studies on similar systems. © 2022 IEEE.

In transiting from one civilization to another, technology has played a vital and positive role. In the 21st century, one of the digital developments that is paving ways for human life improvement is machine-assisted technology using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Artificial Intelligence has successfully enhanced man's capacity in solving complex problems and processes. However, as developed nations continue to reap from the adoption of AI in various fields of human endeavors, the continent of Africa has remained behind, especially in AI-based skills and research. Various governments in developing nations have encouraged the adoption of AI, especially in institutions of learning. However, theoretical adoption without practical experience has remained an ineffective way of bridging the digital divide. In this paper we present the outcome of a practical approach to bridging the AI divide among students and researchers in Africa through funding support from the Google TensorFlow College Outreach Award. A 3-day hybrid bootcamp was organized (11th to 13th December, 2023) using the Google funding in order to equip postgraduate students and researchers with AI and collaborative research skills. A pre-survey method was employed to ascertain the knowledge level of the bootcamp participants. From the pre-surveyed feedback, training sessions on various AI domains were presented, and participant equipped with practical AI skills using a deployed AI-based cloud programming platform running on the private Federated Genomic Cloud (FEDGEN) infrastructure at Covenant University. A post-survey feedback was used to ascertain the effectiveness of this approach. A comparative analysis of the pre-survey and post-survey reveals a 70% improvement of AI skills among participants. This shows that having continuous training session for students and researchers is an effective method in closing the AI skills gap between developed and developing nations. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper investigates an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided millimeter-wave integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. Specifically, based on the passive beam scanning in the downlink, the IRS finds the optimal beam for reflecting the signals from the base station to a communication user. Meanwhile, the IRS estimates the angle of a nearby target based on its echo signal received by the sensing elements mounted on the IRS (i.e., semi-passive IRS). We propose an ISAC protocol for achieving the above objective via simultaneous (beam) training and sensing (STAS). Then, we derive the achievable rate of the communication user and the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) of the angle estimation for the sensing target in closed-form. The achievable rate and CRB exhibit different performance against the duration of beam scanning. Specifically, the average achievable rate initially rises and subsequently declines, while the CRB monotonically decreases. Consequently, the duration of beam scanning should be carefully selected to balance communication and sensing performance. Simulation results have verified our analytical findings and shown that, thanks to the efficient use of downlink beam scanning signal for simultaneous communication and target sensing, the STAS protocol outperforms the benchmark protocol with orthogonal beam training and sensing. © 2023 IEEE.

The use of TD-learning has been widely employed in reinforcement learning algorithms due to its efficiency and practicality. Herein, we study the convergence of a variant of Monte Carlo Exploring Starts when $\operatorname{TD}(\lambda)$ is used in policy evaluation and policy improvement, and lookahead is used in the policy improvement step. Our results provide a threshold for the amount of lookahead that ensures convergence of Monte Carlo Exploring Starts with $\mathrm{T D}(\lambda)$ as a function of $\lambda \in[0,1]$.

In this paper we consider online distributed learning problems. Online distributed learning refers to the process of training learning models on distributed data sources. In our setting a set of agents need to cooperatively train a learning model from streaming data. Differently from federated learning, the proposed approach does not rely on a central server but only on peer-to-peer communications among the agents. This approach is often used in scenarios where data cannot be moved to a centralized location due to privacy, security, or cost reasons. In order to overcome the absence of a central server, we propose a distributed algorithm that relies on a quantized, finite-time coordination protocol to aggregate the locally trained models. Furthermore, our algorithm allows for the use of stochastic gradients during local training. Stochastic gradients are computed using a randomly sampled subset of the local training data, which makes the proposed algorithm more efficient and scalable than traditional gradient descent. In our paper, we analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm in terms of the mean distance from the online solution. Finally, we present numerical results for a logistic regression task.
