Collaborative learning is a kind of group learning mode where members of group learn any concept or topic through communication and discussions. Current researches on collaborative learning paid little attention to the functionalities of group members. In order to solve this problem, this paper utilizes a Learning Blog （LBlog） to share experience and viewpoints of group members, and achieve learning goals together in the end. The LBlog also integrates Learning Management System （LMS） to manage the group members’ profiles to evaluate the learners’ learning efficiency. Our initial experiments with the LBlog indicate that it is an useful educational tool to support collaborative learning.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) is a toxic gas that can cause respiratory problems, and sensing its presence is crucial for environmental monitoring and industrial safety. This investigation presents a novel approach towards sensing NO₂ gas by utilizing partially completed/recycled silicon solar cells employing a metal-assisted etching process to fabricate a high-performance p-black-silicon based sensor. Structural and morphological analyses using X-ray diffraction patterns, Raman spectroscopy and cross sectional FESEM characterization confirm the integrity of the p-B-silicon sensor. By combining recycling techniques with advanced fabrication methods, the resulting sensor exhibits exceptional sensitivity, a low detection limit of 1 ppm, and rapid response times (12-14 s) when exposed to NO₂ gas concentrations ranging from 1 to 5 ppm. The enhanced sensitivity is attributed to the unique nanostructured comb-like morphology of the sensor material, which facilitates fast charge transport mechanisms, and a plausible sensing mechanism has been proposed and explained using a depletion model diagram and energy model diagram. This eco-friendly and cost-effective solution not only addresses electronic waste concerns but also highlights the potential of sustainable practices in scientific research. The findings emphasize on the importance of environmental consciousness and innovation, showcasing a promising future for gas sensing technology. By utilizing recycled materials and advanced fabrication techniques, this study contributes to the development of efficient, eco-friendly sensors for environmental monitoring applications, paving the way for a more sustainable and technologically advanced future in the field of gas sensors. © 2025 RSC.

In this paper, we present a novel method (Contrast Source Inversion - Electric Properties Tomography or CSI-EPT) to dielectric imaging of biological tissue using so-called B1+ data measurable by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems. Integral representations for the electromagnetic field quantities are taken as a starting point and we follow an iterative contrast source inversion approach to retrieve the dielectric tissue parameters from measured field data. Numerical results illustrate the performance of the method and show that reliable results are produced near tissue boundaries as opposed to the currently used methods. Fine structures can be resolved as well and since CSI-EPT reconstructs the electric field strength inside a scanning region of interest, it is also a promising candidate to determine the patient-specific SAR deposition during an MRI scan. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, aiming at the problems including but not limited to Tibetan sorting, Tibetan syllable component attribute statistics, Tibetan speech recognition in the application field of component recognition of Tibetan syllable, we propose a new algorithm for component decomposition and type recognition of Tibetan syllable based on TSRM (Tibetan Syllable Rule Model). Experimental results on mixed-arranged complex Tibetan texts show that our newly proposed algorithm can achieve a score around 90% both accuracy rate and recall rate for Component Decomposition and Type Recognition of Tibetan Syllable. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Improved compressibility of multislice CT datasets using 3D JPEG2000 compression

This study evaluated the compressibility of multislice CT (MSCT) datasets and its dependence on (1) slice thickness and (2) the use of three-dimensional (3D) vs. 2D JPEG2000 compression methods. Five thoracic CT datasets were obtained using a 16-detector MSCT scanner with a collimation of 0.75 mm (120 kVp, 90 mAs) and reconstructed at five slice thicknesses from 0.75 to 10.0 mm. These datasets were irreversibly compressed using a standard 2D JPEG2000 encoder and a developmental 3D JPEG2000 algorithm based on Part 2 of the JPEG2000 standard. Compression ratios ranged from 4:1 to 64:1. Image distortion was computed utilizing peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and the Sarnoff JNDmetrix visual discrimination model. For 2D compression, the thinnest sections were substantially less compressible than thicker sections for the same level of image quality, particularly at higher compression ratios. Applying 3D compression yielded consistently higher image quality in most cases compared to 2D compression at the same ratios. The advantage of 3D compression increased for thinner slices and higher compression ratios. These results indicate that 3D JPEG2000 (Part 2) compression offers substantial advantages over the current 2D JPEG2000 standard, yielding better quantitative image quality at similar compression ratios or comparable image quality at higher compression ratios. © 2004, Elsevier science B.V. Metaheuristic algorithms have been applied widely for real-world problems in many fields, e.g., engineering, financial, healthcare. Bats algorithm (BA) is a recent metaheuristic algorithm with considering as a robust optimization method that can outperform existing algorithms. However, when dealing with complicated combinatorial problems such as traveling salesman problems (TSP), the BA can be fallen in a local optimum. This paper proposes a new hybridizing Parallel BA (HPBA) with a mutation in local-search to escape such its drawback scenario for TSP. A graph theory mutation method is used to embed for hybridizing BA with exploiting similarities among individuals. The proposed method is extensively evaluated in TSP with series instances of the benchmark from TSPLIB to test its performance. The compared experimental result with the previous method and the best-known solutions (B.K.S) in the literature shows that the proposed approach offers competitive results. © 2020 - IOS Press and the authors. Training machine learning (ML) models on mobile and Web-of-Things (WoT) has been widely acknowledged and employed as a promising solution to privacy-preserving ML. However, these end-devices often suffer from constrained resources and fail to accommodate increasingly large ML models that crave great computation power. Offloading ML models partially to the cloud for training strikes a trade-off between privacy preservation and resource requirements. However, device-cloud training creates communication overheads that delay model training tremendously. This paper presents EdgeMove, the first device-edge training scheme that enables fast pipelined model training across edge devices and edge servers. It employs probing-based mechanisms to tackle the new challenges raised by device-edge training. Before training begins, it probes nearby edge servers' training performance and bootstraps model training by constructing a training pipeline with an approximate model partitioning. During the training process, EdgeMove accommodates user mobility and system dynamics by probing nearby edge servers' training performance adaptively and adapting the training pipeline proactively. Extensive experiments are conducted with two popular DNN models trained on four datasets for three ML tasks. The results demonstrate that EdgeMove achieves a 1.3 × -2.1 × speedup over the state-of-the-art scheme. © 2023 ACM.

Network design and optimisation has been one of the major focuses of the research community over the past decades. Connectivity of topologies can be improved by simply adding links;however, this incurs cost for addition of links for increased resilience. Therefore, topological design and optimisation requires developing algorithms so that a designer can select optimum parameters to achieve resilience in the least costly manner. In this paper, we develop a heuristic algorithm that optimises a topology based on algebraic connectivity metric that is defined as the second smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix. Furthermore, the connectivity of a topology is improved based on the available budget, for which we capture network cost in terms of euclidian distance between two connected nodes. We apply our algorithm on three realistic sets of backbone service provider graphs and compare the utility of our algorithm. The heuristic algorithm we introduce in this paper optimises topologies and is computationally less costly than an exhaustive optimisation. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a fast switchable lens system with multiple focal points. Specifically, the combination of the Electrically Suppressed Helix Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal (ESHFLC) based polarization rotator and a passive polarizationdependent LC lens can switch the focal points at high speed (50μs). Moreover, a cascaded assembly of 3 such lens units shows 8-focal points, with a fast response time of 50μs. This device shows promising potential for VR and depth-mapping. © 2021 SID.
