PROGRESS:The past ten years have seen uneven developments in women's and adolescents' health and reproductive rights. Globally, reductions of maternal and neonatal mortality rates and adolescent birth rates have been achieved along with improvements in coverage of key reproductive and maternal health services. However, preterm birth rates have not changed significantly. There is still large variation in these rates across the world, with the highest rates occurring in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. programMATIC PRIORITIES:Effective interventions based on current clinical guidelines are available that can prevent preterm birth or reduce its negative impacts on newborns. These recommended interventions can be delivered as part of essential health service packages during the preconception, antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal phases. They encompass comprehensive family planning services that enable women and adolescent girls to determine the timing and number of children they have, and the provision of prevention and treatment-related interventions during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period that improve maternal and newborn health including reducing preterm births as well as stillbirths. Health system improvements are needed so that all women are reached with these services and that they are provided respectfully and according to standards. PIVOTS:To better prevent and manage preterm births as part of broader goals of improving maternal and newborn health, health systems need to be strengthened so that all women are reached with essential packages of care before, during, and after pregnancy and childbirth. Achieving this and integrating these service packages into universal health coverage strategies requires collaboration across government leaders, civil society members, private sector actors, and development partners. In this paper, we explain how an experiential learning course and study tour to Gansu Province (People’s Republic of China) enabled undergraduates at the Singapore Management University (SMU) to acquire 21st-century competencies and higher-order thinking skills by analyzing and evaluating specific aspects of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and China–Singapore (Chongqing) Connectivity Initiative — New International Land–Sea Trade Corridor (CCI-ILSTC) with emphasis on developing viable Go-To-Market (GTM) strategies aimed at selling Gansu produce in four Southeast Asian markets. We share how the course was designed to support the attainment of key learning goals and discuss how we turned pedagogical aspirations into concrete learning outcomes. We introduce key aspects of the so-called “SMU-XO” project that the students conducted in partnership with an industry partner, Pacific International Lines (PIL), and discuss how the project work helped learners to gain global competency by (i) examining critical issues related to BRI such as multi-modal infrastructure connectivity, (ii) appreciating the local perspectives of project stakeholders in Lanzhou and Shanghai and (iii) successfully interacting with people from different cultures, namely China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand.

Educational research suggests that cognitive processing in diagnostic radiology requires a solid foundation in the basic sciences and knowledge of the radiological changes associated with disease. Although it is generally assumed that dental students must acquire both sets of knowledge, little is known about the most effective way to teach them. Currently, the basic and clinical sciences are taught separately. This study was conducted to compare the diagnostic accuracy of students when taught basic sciences segregated or integrated with clinical features. Predoctoral dental students (n=51) were taught four confusable intrabony abnormalities using basic science descriptions integrated with the radiographic features or taught segregated from the radiographic features. The students were tested with diagnostic images, and memory tests were performed immediately after learning and one week later. On immediate and delayed testing, participants in the integrated basic science group outperformed those from the segregated group. A main effect of learning condition was found to be significant (p<0.05). The results of this study support the critical role of integrating biomedical knowledge in diagnostic radiology and shows that teaching basic sciences integrated with clinical features produces higher diagnostic accuracy in novices than teaching basic sciences segregated from clinical features.

DeYoung(top third from left) received his D.V.M. from Michigan State University and Ph.D. from Colorado State University. He is a Diplomate from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Don has worked at the University of Arizona Tucson since 1979 and is the Associate Director of University Animal Care and has been involved with numerous studies of wildlife. Brian D. Jansen(top right) is a graduate research assistant working towards his M.S. degree in wildlife ecology at the University of Arizona Tucson. He is studying desert bighorn sheep responses to disease and mining in the Silver Bell Mountains Arizona. He received his B.S. in wildlife from the University of Arizona in 2002. Vernon C. Bleich(bottom left) received B.S. and M.A. degrees from California State University Long Beach and a Ph.D. from the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). He is a senior environmental scientist with the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) where he supervises the Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep Recovery Program (SNBSRP) and directs the Round Valley Project a long-term effort examining relationships between habitat quality prey densities and populations of mule deer and mountain sheep in the eastern Sierra Nevada. A polygenic score (PGS) for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) was derived recently from data on genome-wide significant loci in European ancestry populations. We applied this PGS to populations in 17 European countries and observed a consistent association with the AD risk, age at onset and cerebrospinal fluid levels of AD biomarkers, independently of apolipoprotein E locus (APOE). This PGS was also associated with the AD risk in many other populations of diverse ancestries. A cross-ancestry polygenic risk score improved the association with the AD risk in most of the multiancestry populations tested when theAPOEregion was included. Finally, we found that the PGS/polygenic risk score captured AD-specific information because the association weakened as the diagnosis was broadened. In conclusion, a simple PGS captures the AD-specific genetic information that is common to populations of different ancestries, although studies of more diverse populations are still needed to better characterize the genetics of AD.

Recently unintended pregnancies have been described as "a new kind of mid-life crisis." Given the high prevalence of unwanted or mistimed pregnancy in the US, we examined the sexual and reproductive health patterns of sexually active midlife women. An examination of the prevalence of unintended pregnancy among midlife women revealed a gap in data indicating unmet sexual and reproductive health needs of midlife women. The application of a framework for primary, secondary and tertiary prevention for unintended pregnancy may assist with guiding care for women and identifying implications for reproductive health policy and potential political interference as they relate to sexual and reproductive health in midlife women.

EDITOR'S SUMMARY The 13th Annual SIG/USE Research Symposium focused on ways mobile technologies have influenced information needs, seeking and use. In her keynote address, Caroline Haythornthwaite framed movement as changing contributorship, interactions and participation in multiple knowledge communities. A series of Ignite talks on the common theme of mobility followed, with topics ranging from mobile phones as the preferred Internet access device, credibility of mobile applications and online resources and public libraries' use of social media and mobile applications to mobile apps promoting health information literacy and supporting teleworking. Small groups brainstormed on opportunities, challenges and research ideas inspired by the theme. Annual SIG/USE awards recognized scholars for innovative work on topics including refugees' information seeking, factors influencing scholars' data sharing and drawings as visual representations of information. The symposium closed with encouragement to consider how information on the move influences perspectives and research into information behavior.
