The potential for magnesium storage batteries to become the next generation of rechargeable batteries is high. This is largely due to the abundance of magnesium metal resources and their high safety and electric capacity per volume. Our research team has been studying magnesium alloys as anode materials for these batteries. Specifically, we have been investigating the electrochemical activity and mechanism of adding copper to Mg-9mass%Al and Mg-9mass%Al-3mass%Ca. Our findings indicate that the electrochemical activity increased with the addition of 1mass%Cu, but decreased with the addition of 3mass%Cu. In addition, changes in lattice constant and basal orientation were also observed. These changes decreased with 1mass%Cu and increased with 3mass%Cu. SEM observations showed that the cell delimitation was indistinct for the 1%Cu addition. © 2024 The Japan Institute of Light Metals.

Magnesium rechargeable batteries are attracting attention as next-generation rechargeable batteries because of their resource abundance, cost, safety, and high electrical capacity per volume compared to conventional lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. Our joint research team focused not only on the electrochemically active magnesium composition of ribbon for the negative electrode materials of magnesium rechargeable batteries but also on the production process, focused on the single roll type liquid quenching and rapid solidification method, which can be produced at a lower cost. In this study, the optimal processing conditions were examined by comparing CAE analysis with ribbon actually manufactured, with the aim of further improving manufacturing conditions using the same method, such as length discontinuities, thickness, and surface properties of ribbon. We specifically various process parameters such as injection pressure and roll peripheral speed for evaluation. As a result, several linear cracks were observed on the surface of the ribbon as the peripheral speed increased and as the Gap became wider, and the surface properties tended to deteriorate. Also, It was found that the dominant factor in the length of the ribbon was the peripheral speed. As the peripheral speed increased, the length of the ribbon tended to increase. © 2023 Japan Institute of Light Metals. All rights reserved.

Climate change-induced shifts in landslide susceptibility in São Sebastião (southeastern Brazil)

Landslides are a pressing natural hazard, particularly in regions prone to extreme weather events, and their frequency is expected to rise due to climate change. This paper investigates landslide susceptibility in São Sebastião, a coastal region in southeastern Brazil, under various climate change scenarios. The study fills a critical gap in understanding how future precipitation changes driven by climate models could affect the area's susceptibility to landslides. Current assessments often overlook the combined effects of environmental variables and land-use dynamics under future climate conditions. To bridge this gap, this research integrates environmental variables, including Soil Moisture Index (SMI), slope degree, saturation, relief dissection, geomorphology, geology, and topographic position index (TPI), with land use and land cover (LULC) data. Scenarios from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0, and RCP8.5 CMIP5 (Climate Models Intercomparison programme Version 5) models were applied to model the impact of changing precipitation patterns on landslide susceptibility. Using geospatial data and a weighted sum model, susceptibility maps were developed for each climate scenario and validated with a landslide inventory and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. The findings indicate a notable shift in landslide risk, with scenarios RCP6.0 and RCP8.5 showing significant increases in moderately susceptible areas due to higher precipitation intensities. Frequency Ratio (FR) analysis revealed varying levels of landslide susceptibility across scenarios, with RCP2.6 showing lower probabilities for moderate landslides (FR: 0.007946) compared to higher ratings for RCP4.5, RCP6.0, and RCP8.5 (FR: 1.663156 for high landslides). During COVID-19 pandemic several countries have implemented quarantines in response to the virus’ spread, which was considered an emergency. Thailand was under a state of emergency from January to December 2020, which has had an impact on the state of environment. Based on real-time data from the Pollution Control Department, the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on PM2.5 pollution in Thailand was examined. Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation was used to generate a more accurate visual representation of the PM2.5 pollution through a spatial distribution of atmospheric pollutants across the provinces of Thailand. PM2.5 levels in all considered areas reduced considerably between 2017 and 2020, with the most significant decrease occurring during the lockdown period of April-July in 2020. As the pre-COVID-19 period occurred during late winter in Thailand, the monthly average PM2.5 concentrations in all selected provinces were gradually increased from December 2019 to March 2020. During the lockdown period, the concentration of PM2.5 was reduced in Pathum Thani (48.9%), Samut Sakhon (35.6%) Samut Prakarn (33.6%), and Bangkok (31.7%) The spatial–temporal distribution of the PM2.5 levels in Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakarn provinces were analyzed for October 2020, during the new normal period. The results showed a significant decrease in concentration of up to 31% compared to previous years where industrial operations were situated. This study showed that the government enforced lockdown during COVID-19 pandemic was beneficial in understanding the impact of reduced human activities on anthropogenic air pollutants’ concentrations. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

With the recent digitization, electronic equipment housings are required to be thin-walled and have rigidity, heat dissipation, corrosion resistance, and electromagnetic shielding properties. Magnesium alloys are promising materials that satisfy these requirements. Mg-Al alloys have good castability and high strength, but their thermal conductivity decreases. In general, adding alloying elements to magnesium decreases thermal conductivity the effect of aluminum addition is significant. It was found that adding calcium to Mg-Al alloys to form Mg-Al-Ca (AX) alloys results in higher thermal conductivity than that of Mg-Al alloys. However, AX alloys have poor corrosion resistance and require post-treatment such as surface treatment. In this study, AX64, which has high thermal conductivity among the AX series alloys, was used as the basic composition, and corrosion resistance was improved by adding manganese and misch metal, and an attempt was made to improve corrosion resistance and emissivity through surface treatment. The change in thermal conductivity by heat treatment was also investigated. Experimental results showed that the addition of manganese and misch metal improved corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity. Plasma anodization also improved corrosion resistance and emissivity. Heat treatment of these alloys at 400°C improved the thermal conductivity with longer holding time. © 2023 The Japan Institute of Light Metals.

Our research specifies the criteria for categorizing comments and supplements the limitations of the existing services that filter out only some of the direct malicious comments centered on specific vocabulary and phrases. In comparison to prior research detecting three sentiments as positive, negative, or neutral, we subdivided expressions into six categories. Our model applying classification downstream tasks to a pre-trained KcBERT model draws results reflecting the meaning and social context of the comments. Of mice and cats: interspecific variation in prey responses to direct and indirect predator cues

Abstract: Prey behavioral responses to predation risk cues may vary between species;moreover, the strength of these behaviors may differ depending on risk cue. In northwestern Taiwan, we used the giving up density (GUD) framework supported with camera trap observations to test how two wild murid rodents that differ by up to fivefold in body size (striped field mouse, Apodemus agrarius, and lesser rice-field rat, Rattus losea) altered their foraging behavior depending on microhabitat characteristics (indirect predator cues) and exposure to predator odors (direct predator cues) of three felids: the native leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis), the introduced domestic cat (Felis catus), and the exotic bobcat (Lynx rufus). GUD was not affected by predator odors but rather by microhabitat type;rodents removed more seeds under the cover of vegetation compared to exposed food stations, which may reflect a proactive approach to avoiding high-risk areas in a heterogeneous environment. The smaller mouse, A. agrarius, spent more time foraging in experimental food patches compared to the larger rat, R. losea, irrespective of predator odor. Conversely, R. losea spent more time investigating stations and exhibiting vigilance compared to A. agrarius. Species-level differences are consistent with behavioral phenomenon that smaller, “faster” species confer more boldness compared to larger, “slower” species, which reinforces the connection between behavior and pace of life, and further elucidates how the behavior of different prey species may not be interchangeable in contexts of risk. Significance statement: In the wild, animals eat while trying not to be eaten. Therefore, preys often change their behavior in response to risk cues, but the intricacies of these behavioral shifts can be complex and vary between species. Effects of interactive unplugged programming activities on computational thinking skills and student engagement in elementary education

Different instructional strategies have been drawn to assist elementary school students in improving computational thinking (CT) skills and student engagement (SE) in unplugged programming activities. This paper aimed to explore how the interactive strategies of unplugged programming affect CT skills and SE. The study was conducted based on a quasi-experimental research method. The sample was composed of 104 sixth-grade students from northern China. The students in the experimental group learned with interactive unplugged programming, whereas those in the control group learned with non-interactive unplugged programming. Analysis of Covariance statistics and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling were adopted for data analysis. Results showed that the performance of the experimental group in CT skills and SE was considerably better than that of the control group. Moreover, the predictive relationships were more complex between CT skills and SE in the experimental group. In general, these findings confirmed the teaching value of interactive unplugged programming, and further emphasized the important role of students’ CT skills in programming engagement. Therefore, through the application of interaction in instruction design, each student can be assigned a positive role to create a programming classroom that is more conducive to students. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.
