The Effects of Audible Sound for Enhancing the Growth Rate of Microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis in Vegetative Stage

Physico-stimulant like audible sound is one of the new promising methods for enhancing microalgae growth rate. Here, microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis was cultivated with the addition of audible sound with titles “Blues for Elle” and “Far and Wide.” The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of audible sound to the growth and productivity of microalgae. The experiment has been conducted by exposing the audible sound for 8 h in 22 days to microalgae cultivation. The result showed that microalgae H. pluvialis treated by the music “Blues for Elle” shows the highest growth rate (0.03 per day), and 58% higher than the one without audible sound. The average number of cells in stationary phase is 0.76 × 10⁴ cells/mL culture and the productivity is 3.467 × 10² cells/mL/day. The pH of microalgae medium slightly decreases because of proton production during photosynthesis process. The kinetic rate constant (k_app) is 0.078 per day, reaction half-life (t_1/2) is 8.89 days, and catalytic surface (K_surf) is 1.66 × 10⁻⁵/day/cm². In conclusion, this audible sound is very useful to stimulate microalgae growth rate, especially H. pluvialis. © 2017 Institut Pertanian Bogor

Today in Scientific Data, two compendia of geochemical and multi-omic sequence information (DNA, RNA, protein) generated over almost a decade of time series monitoring in a seasonally anoxic coastal marine setting are presented to the scientific community. These data descriptors introduce a model ecosystem for the study of microbial responses to ocean deoxygenation, a phenotype that is currently expanding due to climate change. Public access to this time series information is intended to promote scientific collaborations and the generation of new hypotheses relevant to microbial ecology, biogeochemistry and global change issues. © The Author(s) 2017.

Background: The three-item Sexual Distress Scale (SDS-3) has been frequently used to assess distress related to sexuality in public health surveys and research on sexual wellbeing. However, its psychometric properties and measurement invariance across cultural, gender and sexual subgroups have not yet been examined. This multinational study aimed to validate the SDS-3 and test its psychometric properties, including measurement invariance across language, country, gender identity, and sexual orientation groups. Methods: We used global survey data from 82,243 individuals (Mean _age=32.39 years;40.3 % men, 57.0 % women, 2.8 % non-binary, and 0.6 % other genders) participating in the International Sexual Survey (ISS;https://***/) across 42 countries and 26 languages. Participants completed the SDS-3, as well as questions regarding sociodemographic characteristics, including gender identity and sexual orientation. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supported a unidimensional factor structure for the SDS-3, and multi-group CFA (MGCFA) suggested that this factor structure was invariant across countries, languages, gender identities, and sexual orientations. Cronbach's α for the unidimensional score was 0.83 (range between 0.76 and 0.89), and McDonald's ω was 0.84 (range between 0.76 and 0.90). Participants who did not experience sexual problems had significantly lower SDS-3 total scores (M = 2.99;SD=2.54) compared to those who reported sexual problems (M = 5.60;SD=3.00), with a large effect size (Cohen's d = 1.01 [95 % CI=-1.03, -0.98];p < 0.001). Conclusion: The SDS-3 has a unidimensional factor structure and appears to be valid and reliable for measuring sexual distress among individuals from different countries, gender identities, and sexual orientations. © 2024 The Author(s)

Our understanding of strong gravity near supermassive compact objects has recently improved thanks to the measurements made by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). We use here the M87* shadow size to infer constraints on the physical charges of a large variety of nonrotating or rotating black holes. For example, we show that the quality of the measurements is already sufficient to rule out that M87* is a highly charged dilaton black hole. Similarly, when considering black holes with two physical and independent charges, we are able to exclude considerable regions of the space of parameters for the doubly-charged dilaton and the Sen black holes.

She is a proud Bruin alumna and an avid reader of books and lover of sports. At UCLA Chris Mott has been teaching a general education course on the American novel since 1991. Over that period no syllabus has used the same set of texts though defining questions regarding race class gender and sexuality feature in every iteration. Steven Khang Duong is a second-year undergraduate student at UCLA majoring in Business Economics and double minoring in Labor and Workplace Studies and Public Policy. Involved with other student leaders of color at UCLA he aims to apply his academic knowledge to help bring equity to underrepresented communities on and off campus. Kristy Phan is a second-generation Chinese-Vietnamese American and fourth-year/transfer student at UCLA majoring in Asian American Studies. She has previously interned at Chinese American Museum and Chinese Historical Society of Southern California and has been involved in Asian Pacific Coalition FEM Newsmagazine and Pacific Ties Newsmagazine at UCLA. Upon graduation she hopes to explore careers in public service education and social work. Angela Rose David is a fourth-year undergraduate student at UCLA studying Physiological Science with specialties in Public Health and Spanish Community and Culture. Through interdisciplinary research that explores the intersection between modern healthcare and cultural practice she intends to investigate how factors like advancing biomedical technology cultural tradition community perspectives and socionormative expectations affect health standards and contribute to individual and global growth and success.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). Evaluation of 4-year data set (2013-2016) to define the trophic state of Cirata Reservoir among the seasons and its impact on the reservoir sustainability has been performed. Cirata is one of the cascade reservoirs located on the Citarum River, with the main purpose for electricity generation through a hydropower plant. Data were obtained from eleven sampling stations of monitoring programs in the Cirata Reservoir. The technique for water sample collection and analysis referred to SNI (Indonesian National Standard) 03-7016-2004 and standard method focussing on phosphate, Chlorophyll-a and transparency. This study indicated that the trophic condition of Cirata Reservoir, as a tropical man-made, was unique and dynamic compared to lakes in the temperate season. The results showed that the reservoir water in the last four years was already eutrophic whether in rainy, intermediate or dry seasons with Trophic State Index were 60.42; 59.00 and 57.32 respectively. This study showed that the inlet and centre area of the reservoir had a higher trophic index than the outlet area. This phenomenon indicated that the main sources of eutrophication in Cirata Reservoir came from both the catchment area of the reservoir (i.e. upper Citarum) and on-site the reservoir. Phosphate has been established as the nutrient that commonly limits the productivity in Cirata reservoir. Thereby, phosphate control is critical for the eutrophication mitigation in Cirata. To cope with this condition, strategies must be applied whether to control the phosphate utilization in the catchment or inside the reservoir area.
