The growing global demand for seafood and concerns about overfishing have spurred the rapid expansion of aquaculture. In aquaculture, managing diseases and parasites presents a critical problem, with drug-based solutions being increasingly challenged by the evolution of drug resistance. In this study, we focus on managing salmon louse in the context of open-cage salmon mariculture with potential for the evolution of drug resistance. We devise a model combining parasite dynamics and fish dynamics in a system of fish farms connected to each other by dispersive stages of the parasite and then evaluate the system-wide economic performance of different management strategies involving three parasite-control measures: drug treatment (administering medicine through fish feed), mechanical treatment (pumping fish through a system of water jets and/or soft brushes), and depopulation (emptying a whole farm prematurely). Drug treatment controls drug-sensitive lice at low cost but becomes ineffective in the presence of drug-resistant lice. Mechanical treatment can clear both types of lice but at the cost of diminished fish growth and additional fish mortality. Depopulation removes both the fish and the parasites within the farm but results in prematurely harvested fish that fetch a lower price. Our results suggest that even when the drug is used only once per production cycle and mechanical treatment and depopulation provide the main control of the parasite, the spread of drug resistance is unavoidable in an open-cage system. Furthermore, it is often not economically optimal to drive resistance to the lowest possible level by minimizing drug use: because resistant lice are assumed to have a slightly reduced fecundity, slightly fewer non-drug treatments are needed for controlling drug-resistant parasites than drug-sensitive parasites. Star formation rate (SFR) is a fundamental parameter for describing galaxies and inferring their evolutionary course. H II regions yield the best measure of instantaneous SFR in galaxies, although the derived SFR can have large uncertainties depending on tracers and assumptions. We present an SFR calibration for the entire molecular gas disk of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068, based on our new high-sensitivity ALMA 100 GHz continuum data at 55 pc (= 0′′ . 8) resolution in combination with the HST Paα line data. In this calibration, we account for the spatial variations of dust extinction, electron temperature of H II regions, AGN contamination, and diffuse ionized gas (DIG) based on publicly available multi-wavelength data. Especially, given the extended nature and the possible non-negligible contribution to the total SFR, a careful consideration of DIG is essential. With a cross-calibration between two corrected ionized gas tracers (free-free continuum and Paα), the total SFR of the NGC 1068 disk is estimated to be 3.2 ± 0.5 M☉ yr−1, one-third of the SFR without accounting for DIG (9.1 ± 1.4 M☉ yr−1). We confirmed high SFR around the southern bar-end and the corotation radius, which is consistent with the previous SFR measurements. In addition, our total SFR exceeds the total SFR based on 8 µm dust emission by a factor of 1.5. We attribute this discrepancy to the differences in the young stars at different stages of evolution traced by each tracer and their respective timescales. This study provides an example to address the various uncertainties in conventional SFR measurements and their potential to lead to significant SFR miscalculations. © 2024, CC0.

The transform domain provides a useful tool in the field of confidential data hiding and protection. In order to protect and transmit patients’ information and competence, this study develops an amplitude quantization system in a transform domain by hiding patients’ information in an electrocardiogram (ECG). In this system, we first consider a non-linear model with a hiding state switch to enhance the quality of the hidden ECG signals. Next, we utilize particle swarm optimization (PSO) to solve the non-linear model so as to have a good signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), root mean square error (RMSE), and relative root mean square error (rRMSE). Accordingly, the distortion of the shape in each ECG signal is tiny, while the hidden information can fulfill the needs of physiological diagnostics. The extraction of hidden information is reversely similar to a hiding procedure without primary ECG signals. Preliminary outcomes confirm the effectiveness of our proposed method, especially an Amplitude Similarity of almost 1, an Interval RMSE of almost 0, and SNRs all above 30. © 2023 by the authors.

The photosynthetic plastid(chloroplast)arose more than one billion years ago,when a free-living cyanobacterium became a permanent endosymbiont and remodeled as an organelle in an ancient eukaryotic algal cell(Archibald,2015).Seed plants further evolved mechanisms of plastid differentiation,whereby several types of non-green non-photosynthetic plastids develop in addition to chloroplasts,including amyloplasts,which accumulate starch granules,and chromoplasts,which deposit carotenoids(Pyke,2010,Sun et al.,2018).Plastid differentiation enables multicellular plants to assign specialized roles to different tissues upon cellular differentiation and/or in response to developmental and environmental changes.

In this study, we investigated the drying properties of Sentang (Azadirachta excelsa) dried at different temperatures. Sentang tree planted in Kelantan, Malaysia, was used in this study. Drying specimens with dimensions of 30 ×150 × 500 mm were dried under air-drying conditions, a constant temperature of 60, 80, 100, and 120 °C until the moisture content (MC) of the specimens reaches an equilibrium moisture content (EMC) at each drying condition. The drying properties of the specimens were then examined. The results confirmed that drying temperature had a significant effect on drying time. As expected, drying Sentang under air-drying conditions demanding considerable time than the other drying conditions. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Environmental impacts of small scale industries are still not well investigated, especially for estates where multiple small scale industries are clustered causing cumulative effects potentially impacting most vulnerable groups. This study aimed to investigate the concentrations of heavy metals (Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Pb, Al, Zn, and Cr) and the metalloid (As) in surface soils near the intensely active small-scale industrial area in Thailand, assess the contamination levels in the co-located child care center, and estimate potential human health risks from exposure to the heavy metals. Surface soil heavy metal(loid) elements were evaluated across a background area, area near main roads, a small-scale industrial area, and a child care centre. The concentrations of Al were found be the highest at all investigation sites, with the most elevated concentrations observed in the small-scale industrial area. The concentration of Pb in the industrial area reached 1176 mg/kg, exceeding the national standard and acceptable limit. Moreover, the contamination level for Cu, Pb, and Zn in the industrial area imply a considerable risk with enrichment factor EF > 40, and geo-accumulation index Igeo ≥5. Heavy metal levels (Ni, Cu, Pb) in the soil near the road and the child care center were similar, suggesting shared contamination sources. Conversely, Al, Zn, As, and Cr in the child care center had slightly higher concentrations than near the road but lower than the small-scale industrial area, indicating potential industrial influence on metal levels within the child care center. The principal component analysis showed Mn and Fe distributed in the background, while As, Pb, Ni, Cu, Al, Zn, and Cr accumulated in the small-scale industrial area. The findings indicate that small-scale industrial activities contribute to elevated levels of heavy metals in the soil, particularly within the child care center, posing significant ingestion risks, especially for children (HI > 1). The indiscriminate overconsumption of non-biodegradable packaging, particularly single-use food packaging, resulting from COVID-19 is exacerbating an age-old environmental problem. This is due to changes in consumer behavior that is concerned with safety issues when buying food, which has led to a preference for purchase in delivery and take-out. In addition, health department agencies indicate the use of disposable products to prevent contamination (e.g., disposable foods; and pre-packaged foods). To date, there is no evidence of SARS-CoV‑2 contamination through food ingestion, however, COVID-19 has raised awareness about packaging for hygienic-sanitary protection of food. This thesis paper discusses arguments from the literature regarding the current development of biodegradable food packaging in the context of COVID-19. It takes an international perspective concerning the impact of the pandemic and correlates it with the changes in current and post-pandemic perspectives. To minimize the impacts related to the increase in the consumption of plastics, there must be a greater investment in research for the development of biodegradable packaging focusing on recyclability. Besides that, there is a necessity to change the type of economy adopted nowadays—that is, the linear economy, to the circular economy.

Inner City communities have traditionally been overlooked and often forgotten in the satellite and ground-based remote sensing revolution. For too long, undergraduate minority students from these communities have been marginalized, ostracized, and unprepared to participate in the plethora of remote sensing applications that yet remain new, foreign, and mysterious. Even basic understanding of the amazing tool of remote sensing is unknown to them. These students lack the exposure, the awareness, the understanding, and the engagement in the foray of remote sensing and the unique lens it provides to probe and unearth new ways of gaining knowledge about the environment. To adequately prepare inner-city students to become members of the next generation of geoscientists, to empower and sustain underserved neighborhoods, and to assist in replenishing the geoscience workforce, unique paradigms of teaching and learning about remote sensing are *** the Center for Remote Sensing and Earth System sciences (ReSESS) at the New York City College of technology (City Tech), remote sensing is being used as a catalyst to attract and to engage students from underserved communities in studying urban climate within their local neighborhoods. Results indicate that this approach of using remote sensing to attract students to urban climate increased awareness and understanding in the geosciences, and it motivated students to share their newfound knowledge in environmental sustainability initiatives with their fellow local citizens.

Hybrid energy projects are gaining global interest due to their potential to promote sustainable development. This study addresses a gap in the literature by proposing a stochastic model that assesses the economic feasibility of a hybrid energy system combining wind, photovoltaic generation, and battery storage. Unlike traditional deterministic approaches, the model incorporates uncertainties in key financial and operational variables, improving decision-making in real-world conditions. The optimization framework integrates Design of Experiments (DoE), Response Surface Methodology (RSM), and the Desirability function to balance economic return and financial risk. By maximizing the mean and minimizing the variance of the Net Present Value (NPV), the model identifies an optimal system configuration with 92% wind energy, a demand level of 230 kWh/month, and lithium-ion battery storage. This approach reduces computational complexity and enhances hybrid system viability in regions with strong wind resources, providing a valuable tool for investors and policymakers in sustainable energy planning. © 2025 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
