Group Communication System (GCS) is an important building block for reliable, fault-tolerant distributed applications. Due to highly variable and unpredictable latency in WANs, GCS needs to cope with frequent membership, changes. It results in diminishing the scalability of GCS. In this paper we propose a new scheme that improves the scalability of group membership service for WANs by exploring dedicated membership sewers configured into multiple layers and reaching global agreement on the view through layered servers. It improves the scalability of a process group of N member processes front O(N-2) to O(N-3) with three layers, where N is the number of processes in the group. computer simulation verifies that the proposed scheme requires much smaller number of message exchanges for reaching an agreement on a next view and does that much quicker. In addition, the proposed scheme pl events applications from being blocked until reaching the final view agreement if the applications permit temporary inconsistency.

GDCA: A distributed channel assignment mechanism for multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks

Channel assignment is one of the most important problem in the research of the multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh networks ((MRMC-WMN). Aiming at minimizing the overall network interference and optimizing the usage of channel resource, channel assignment problem must obey the constraint of limited radios and available channels for MRMC-WMN. The above optimization problem is known to be NP-complete. This paper focuses on the study of channel assignment in MRMC-WMN. We propose a new grid-loop-based echanism for dynamic channel assignment. Our mechanism exploits the group which we called grid-loop, which is constructed on distributed minimum spanning tree by self-organized. Our new GDCA scheme has many advantages over cluster-based scheme. The analysis and comparison demonstrates its feasibility, stability, cost-saving and efficiency. © 2011 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

In disaster situations communication and power infrastructure could be damaged, disrupting their associated services. This could delay relief efforts and cost more lives. In situations where connections are damaged and unreliable, peer-to-peer (P2P) and delay-tolerant networking (DTN) technologies can help provide alternative communication modes particularly in support of rescue and relief operations. Combining the benefits of the store-and-forward capability of DTN and the data propagation techniques of Wi-Fi Direct, we have created a flexible framework called ARC which allows users to create applications that could meet their specific requirements, particularly those in support of emergency communications. To demonstrate our framework, we created a simple application using ARC, and used this application to evaluate its DTN and Wi-Fi Direct group recovery capabilities. © 2016 IEEE.

Personalized gesture interactions for cyber-physical smart-home environments

A gesture-based interaction system for smart homes is a part of a complex cyber-physical environment, for which researchers and developers need to address major challenges in providing personalized gesture interactions. However, current research efforts have not tackled the problem of personalized gesture recognition that often involves user identification. To address this problem, we propose in this work a new event-driven service-oriented framework called gesture services for cyber-physical environments(GS-CPE) that extends the architecture of our previous work gesture profile for web services(GPWS). To provide user identification functionality, GS-CPE introduces a two-phase cascading gesture password recognition algorithm for gesture-based user identification using a two-phase cascading classifier with the hidden Markov model and the Golden Section Search, which achieves an accuracy rate of 96.2% with a small training dataset. To support personalized gesture interaction, an enhanced version of the Dynamic Time Warping algorithm with multiple gestural input sources and dynamic template adaptation support is implemented. Our experimental results demonstrate the performance of the algorithm can achieve an average accuracy rate of 98.5% in practical scenarios. Comparison results reveal that GS-CPE has faster response time and higher accuracy rate than other gesture interaction systems designed for smart-home environments.

It is now accepted that powerful retrieval of multimedia data can be achieved with the integration of semantic and contextual metadata that relate to multimedia objects. In the case of objects related to culture and history there is a wealth of related information stored in Digital Libraries. CIDOC/CRM is a new, rapidly adopted standard in the field of cultural heritage that provides a very powerful model for encoding cultural heritage knowledge. In this paper we propose that knowledge is extracted and encoded in MPEG-7 multimedia object descriptions in an automatic manner so that the multimedia objects are augmented with very rich metadata descriptions coming from Digital Libraries. We analyze the mapping problem between CIDOC/CRM and MPEG-7 and we present the algorithms and a software system that supports this mapping. Copyright 2008 ACM.

The provision of interactive multimedia services, such as video-on-demand, teleshoping and distance learning, to a large number of users, still remains a challenging issue in the multimedia area. Despite of recent technological advances in all levels of the distributed multimedia infrastructure (storage, network, compression, standardization etc..), there is a strong need for feedback from public trials. Trial descriptions and evaluations, by revealing potential system limitations and measuring end user reactions, will provide valuable input towards the large-scale deployment of such services. In this paper, we present the teleteaching trial that was held at the end of 1998, at Limburg University (Belgium), in the context of ACTS SICMA project. We describe in detail the overall architecture and present results/implementation experiences for the parts of the system, putting the main emphasis on the server. We present technical integration issues between DAVIC and Internet server protocols (RTSP, DSM-CC etc..), and discuss the overall trial results. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1999.

The integration of information communication technology with the power grid exposes it to cyber threats. The network state estimation process provides stability to the smart grid. The communication network plays a major role in ensuring the successful transmission of state information. However, these network measurements are vulnerable to malicious attacks. This subsequently affects the network measurement such as associated high transmission delays and packet losses affecting the reliability of the smart grid. In this work, we propose a hybrid physics-based data-driven model that uses data fusion from the state-of-the-art physics-based Network State Estimation model and a data-driven model to detect false data injection attacks in the communication network layer of the smart grid. The performance of the data fusion method is evaluated and the simulation results show that the proposed model outperforms the standalone approaches in the detection of bad data. This shows that the proposed scheme is able to improve the cyber-physical security of the communication network layer of the smart grid. © 2024 IEEE.

Blockchain is a distributed ledger based on peer-to-peer networks, originally used for crypto-currency systems. Blockchains are being used as an enabling technology for decentralised applications in the areas of Internet-of-Things, finance, supply-chain and others. Consistency, data privacy, performance, and energy efficiency are of paramount importance in such applications. The full nodes of public, permissionless blockchains undertake the task of verifying the transactions generated by the network. Full nodes perform operations such as confirming balances, transactions, and history, i.e. mostly database search queries. Consequently, their throughput is crucial for the performance of blockchain systems. In this work, the benefits of accelerating the blockchain search and insert queries by leveraging GPU platforms are studied. An extensive comparison between the most dominant utilized database is provided, i.e. LevelDB, and MegaKV, a high-performance GPU-accelerated database. Realistic operations that take place in blockchain systems are emulated and evaluated over representative scenarios, showing three orders of magnitude gains in throughput and energy efficiency without compromising the security aspect. The extensive comparison between LevelDB and MegaKV indicates that GPU acceleration is an effective solution for runtime and energy efficiency enhancement of blockchain systems, and the integration of the two technologies is a promising field of research. © 2022 The Authors. Cyclops is a new vertex-oriented graph-parallel framework for writing distributed graph analytics. Unlike existing distributed graph computation models, Cyclops retains simplicity and computation-efficiency by synchronously computing over a distributed immutable view, which grants a vertex with read-only access to all its neighboring vertices. The view is provided via readonly replication of vertices for edges spanning machines during a graph cut. Cyclops follows a centralized computation model by assigning a master vertex to update and propagate the value to its replicas unidirectionally in each iteration, which can significantly reduce messages and avoid contention on replicas. Being aware of the pervasively available multicore-based clusters, Cyclops is further extended with a hierarchical processing model, which aggregates messages and replicas in a single multicore machine and transparently decomposes each worker into multiple threads ondemand for different stages of computation. We have implemented Cyclops based on an open-source Pregel clone called Hama. Our evaluation using a set of graph algorithms on an in-house multicore cluster shows that Cyclops outperforms Hama from 2.06X to 8.69X and 5.95X to 23.04X using hash-based and Metis partition algorithms accordingly, due to the elimination of contention on messages and hierarchical optimization for the multicore-based clusters. Cyclops (written in Java) also has comparable performance with PowerGraph (written in C++) despite the language difference, due to the significantly lower number of messages and avoided contention. Many machine learning and data mining (MLDM) problems like recommendation, topic modeling and medical diagnosis can be modeled as computing on bipartite graphs. However, most distributed graph-parallel systems are oblivious to the unique characteristics in such graphs and existing online graph partitioning algorithms usually causes excessive replication of vertices as well as significant pressure on network communication. This article identifies the challenges and opportunities of partitioning bipartite graphs for distributed MLDM processing and proposes BiGraph, a set of bipartite-oriented graph partitioning algorithms. BiGraph leverages observations such as the skewed distribution of vertices, discriminated computation load and imbalanced data sizes between the two subsets of vertices to derive a set of optimal graph partition algorithms that result in minimal vertex replication and network communication. BiGraph has been implemented on PowerGraph and is shown to have a performance boost up to 17.75X (from 1.38X) for four typical MLDM algorithms, due to reducing up to 62% vertex replication, and up to 96% network traffic. © 2014 ACM.
