This paper presents a parallelized algorithm for the deblurring of images obtained from Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Images generated by MRI may suffer a loss of clarity due to inhomogeneities in the magnetic field. One of the techniques for removing this blurring artifact is the demodulation of the data for each pixel of the image using the value of the magnetic field near that point in space. This method consists of acquiring a local field map, finding the best fit to a linear map and using it to deblur the image distortions due to local frequency variations. This is a very computation intensive operation and presents appreciable gains through parallelization. This paper presents the implementation of this algorithm using two popular message-passing platforms, PVM and MPI and discusses the pros and cons of each. A message-passing paradigm was chosen for parallelization since the target architecture is a network of workstations. Performance figures are presented for various problem and network sizes and future improvements are discussed. © 13th International Conference on Computers and Their Applications 1998, CATA 1998. Currently, many multimedia or continuous media server system is under development on top of either workstations or high-end PCs clustered with high speed networking facilities. In this paper we introduce Crown, a continuous media server on clustered high performance PCs with Myrinet, fast network switching equipment, and then address CrownFS, a file system on top of Crown, to offer continuous media streams to many subscribers at the same time. For easy and rapid tuning of the performance of CrownFS, we prototyped it. Prototyping requires less efforts and costs than direct implementation. Also, more reliable system optimization is obtainable rather than simulation. By using the prototype, we measured the scalability of CrownFS according to disk access strategies.

NYNET (ATM wide area network testbed in New York state) Communication System (NCS) is a multithreaded message passing system developed at Syracase University that provides high performance and flexible communication services over asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) based high performance distributed computing (HPDC) environments. NCS capitalizes on thread based programming model to overlap computations and communications, and develop a dynamic message passing environment with separate data and control paths. This leads to a flexible and adaptive message passing environment that can support multiple flow control, error control, and multicasting algorithms. We provide an overview of the NCS architecture and present how NCS point to point communication services are implemented. We also analyze the overhead incurred by using multithreading and compare the performance of NCS point to point communication primitives with those of other message passing systems such as p4, PVM, and MPI. Benchmarking results indicate that NCS shows comparable performance to other systems for small message sizes but outperforms other systems for large message sizes.

Introduces Strings, a high-performance distributed shared memory system designed for clusters of symmetrical multiprocessors (SMPs). The distinguishing feature of this system is the use of a fully multithreaded runtime system, written using POSIX threads. Strings also allows multiple application threads to be run on each node in a cluster. Since most modern UNIX systems can multiplex these threads on kernel-level lightweight processes, applications written using Strings can use all the processors in a SMP machine. This paper describes some of the architectural details of the system and analyzes the performance improvements with two example programs and a few benchmark programs from the SPLASH-2 suite.

In this paper, we present the Cello disk scheduling framework for meeting the diverse service requirements of applications. Cello employs a two-level disk scheduling architecture, consisting of a class-independent scheduler and a set of class-specific schedulers. The two levels of the framework allocate disk bandwidth at two time-scales: the class-independent scheduler governs the coarse-grain allocation of bandwidth to application classes, while the class-specific schedulers control the fine-grain interleaving of requests. The two levels of the architecture separate application-independent mechanisms from application-specific scheduling policies, and thereby facilitate the co-existence of multiple class-specific schedulers. We demonstrate that Cello is suitable for next generation operating systems since: (i) it aligns the service provided with the application requirements, (ii) it protects application classes from one another, (iii) it is work-conserving and can adapt to changes in work-load, (iv) it minimizes the seek time and rotational latency overhead incurred during access, and (v) it is computationally efficient.

Discusses how a Java execution environment, named Gabi, is designed and implemented. It includes the design and implementation of the interpreter of a Java Virtual Machine (JVM), the class loader, the frame and Java stack, the hash table (class table, native function table and Java string table), the handling of ***, the interface to the native function, the interface to the just-in-time (JIT) compiler and its compiled code for Java methods and the multithreading support, and approaches to boost the performance of the bytecode interpreter by programming skills. Benchmarks are made to compare Gabi with Sun's JRE (Java Runtime Environment).

NYNET (ATM wide-area network testbed in New York state) Communication System (NCS) is a multithreaded message-passing tool developed at Syracuse University that provides low-latency and high-throughput communication services over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)-based high-performance distributed computing (HPDC) environments. NCS provides flexible and scalable group communication services based on dynamic grouping and tree-based multicasting. The NCS architecture, which separates the data and control functions, allows group operations to be implemented efficiently by utilizing the control connections when transferring status information (e.g. topology information, routing information). Furthermore, NCS provides several different algorithms for group communication and allows programmers to select an appropriate algorithm at runtime. The authors overview the general architecture of NCS and present the multicasting services provided by NCS. They analyze and compare the performance of NCS with that of other message-passing tools such as p4, PVM, and MPI in terms of primitive performance and performance.

Recent progress in network technologies has made it possible to integrate digital video and audio into distributed computing environments. Among the various distributed multimedia applications, video-on-demand (VOD) services are the most typical application area. However, interest in large-scale VOD systems is gradually transferring to small and low-cost VOD systems because of the excess investment required in the transmission media. When we make a small-scale VOD system, one of the most important factors is the efficient resource management of the VOD server in order to achieve cost-effectiveness. Thus, multimedia has generated widespread interest in real-time and high-performance I/O support within general-purpose operating systems. This paper presents the performance of a small-scale, UNIX-based VOD server equipped with a real-time scheduler and a continuous media file system (CMFS). The real-time scheduler is based on the theory of non-preemptive real-time systems to test schedulability within polynomial time. To reduce interference of the interrupt processing for the real-time processes, the processes are classified into two groups in order of importance. The CMFS has been designed and implemented to acquire the performance of the raw disk. According to the analysis of the measured data, UNIX can efficiently transfer video data from disk to network and it can also guarantee most deadlines.

With small device features in submicron technologies, interconnection delays play a dominant part in cycle time. Hence, it is important to consider the impact of physical design during high level synthesis. In comparison to a traditional approach which separates high-level synthesis from physical design, an algorithm which is able to make these stages interact very closely, would result in solutions with lower latency and area. However, such an approach could result in increased runtimes. Parallel processing is an attractive way of reducing the runtimes. In this paper, two parallel algorithms for simultaneous scheduling, binding and floorplanning algorithm are presented. A detailed hardware model is considered, taking into account multiplexor and register areas and delays. Experimental results are reported on an IBM SP-2 multicomputer, with close to linear speedups for a set of benchmark circuits.

This paper discusses software reusability strategies for performance and reliability modeling tools. Special emphasis is on web-embedded tools, and the potential interaction between such tools. We present the system analysis tools (SAT) application programming interface, which allows for quickly embedding existing tools in the web, and generally simplifies programming analysis tools by structured reuse. We also introduce the FREUD project, which has as primary aim to establish a single point of access to a variety of web-enabled tools. In addition, FREUD facilitates configurable web tools by allowing a user to select from the registered modeling formalisms, solvers and graphics tools, and by providing glue between the tools through scripting. We will argue that this form of reuse is particularly suitable for performability modeling tools because of their predictable usage pattern. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.
