Contemporary distributed computing systems (DCS) such as Cloud Data Centers are large scale, complex, heterogeneous, and distributed across multiple networks and geographical boundaries. On the other hand, the Internet of Things (IoT)-driven applications are producing a huge amount of data that requires real-time processing and fast response. Managing these resources efficiently to provide reliable services to end-users or applications is a challenging task. The existing Resource Management systems (RMS) rely on either static or heuristic solutions inadequate for such composite and dynamic systems. The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) due to data availability and processing capabilities manifested into possibilities of exploring data-driven solutions in RMS tasks that are adaptive, accurate, and efficient. In this regard, this paper aims to draw the motivations and necessities for data-driven solutions in resource management. It identifies the challenges associated with it and outlines the potential future research directions detailing where and how to apply the data-driven techniques in the different RMS tasks. Finally, it provides a conceptual data-driven RMS model for DCS and presents the two real-time use cases (GPU frequency scaling and data centre resource management from Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure) demonstrating AI-centric approaches' feasibility.

The rapid evolution of Internet of Things (IoT) environments has created an urgent need for secure and trust-worthy distributed computing systems, particularly when dealing with heterogeneous devices and applications where centralized trust cannot be assumed. This paper proposes TrustMesh, a novel blockchain-enabled framework that addresses these challenges through a unique three-layer architecture combining permissioned blockchain technology with a novel multi-phase Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) consensus protocol. The key innovation lies in TrustMesh’s ability to support non-deterministic scheduling algorithms while maintaining Byzantine fault tolerance, features traditionally considered mutually exclusive in blockchain systems. The framework supports a sophisticated resource management approach that enables flexible scheduling decisions while preserving the security guarantees of blockchain-based verification. Our experimental evaluation using a real-world cold chain monitoring scenario demonstrates that TrustMesh successfully maintains Byzantine fault tolerance with fault detection latencies under 150 milliseconds, while maintaining consistent framework overhead across varying computational workloads even with network scaling. These results establish TrustMesh’s effectiveness in balancing security, performance, and flexibility requirements in trustless IoT environments, advancing the state-of-the-art in secure distributed computing frameworks.

Grid-based simulations of hot fusion plasmas are often severely limited by computational and memory resources;the grids live in four- to six-dimensional space and thus suffer the curse of dimensionality. However, high resolutions are required to fully capture the physics of interest. The sparse grid combination technique is a multi-scale method in which many anisotropically coarse resolved grids are used to approximate a fine-scale solution - -and it alleviates the curse of *** paper presents the core concepts of the widely-distributed combination technique, which allows us to use the compute power and memory of more than one HPC system for the same simulation. We apply the sparse grid combination technique to a six-dimensional advection problem serving as a proxy for plasma simulations. The full-grid solution approximated by the combination technique would contain ≈ 5 ZB if computed with conventional grid-based methods. Even the combination technique simulation operates on ≈ 1 × 1011 double-precision degrees of freedom, or 988 GB, plus the supporting sparse grid data structures. We propose a new approach to divide the compute load between the two HPC systems, requiring only 76 GB to be exchanged. Based on this, we have realized the first synchronous combination technique simulation using two HPC systems, in our case the two German Tier-0 supercomputers HAWK and SuperMUC-NG. On two systems, the simulation can be computed at an average overhead of ≈ 35 % (108 s per combination step) for file I/O and transfer. The presented concepts apply to any pair of HPC systems if high-speed data transfer is possible. © 2023 ACM.

While various service orchestration aspects within computing Continuum (CC) systems have been extensively addressed, including service placement, replication, and scheduling, an open challenge lies in ensuring uninterrupted data delivery from IoT devices to running service instances in this dynamic environment, while adhering to specific Quality of Service (QoS) requirements and balancing the load on service instances. To address this challenge, we introduce QEdgeProxy, an adaptive and QoS-aware load balancing framework specifically designed for routing client requests to appropriate IoT service instances in the CC. QEdgeProxy integrates naturally within Kubernetes, adapts to changes in dynamic environments, and manages to seamlessly deliver data to IoT service instances while consistently meeting QoS requirements and effectively distributing load across them. This is verified by extensive experiments over a realistic K3s cluster with instance failures and network variability, where QEdgeProxy outperforms both Kubernetes built-in mechanisms and a state-of-the-art solution, while introducing minimal computational overhead. © 2024 IEEE.

Decision making framework for heterogeneous QoS information: an application to cloud service selection

In recent times, appropriate decision-making in challenging and critical situations has been very well supported by multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) methods. The technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is the most widely used MCDM method for solving decision problems. However, it restricts decision-makers to use only one type of Quality of Service (QoS) information, and it suffers from the rank reversal problem. Restriction to only one type of QoS makes the decision problems more challenging, as it restricts the decision-makers freedom. Further, the rank reversal problem makes the decision result unreliable. To address these issues of TOPSIS, we have proposed a reliable rank reversal robust modular TOPSIS (RMo-TOPSIS). RMo-TOPSIS allows crisp, interval, fuzzy, intuitionistic and neutrosophic fuzzy QoS metrics. It does not suffer from the rank reversal problem. Cloud computing provides computing services on-demand basis without involving maintenance by its users. The availability of many cloud service providers and their services makes cloud service selection a challenging problem. To validate RMo-TOPSIS, we select the cloud service selection consisting of different types of QoS metrics as an application. Experiments on cloud service selection show consistency and accuracy in results obtained by RMo-TOPSIS and its robustness against rank reversal. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Fog and Edge computing extend cloud services to the proximity of end users, allowing many Internet of Things (IoT) use cases, particularly latency-critical applications. Smart devices, such as traffic and surveillance cameras, often do not have sufficient resources to process computation-intensive and latency-critical services. Hence, the constituent parts of services can be offloaded to nearby Edge/Fog resources for processing and storage. However, making offloading decisions for complex services in highly stochastic and dynamic environments is an important, yet difficult task. Recently, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has been used in many complex service offloading problems; however, existing techniques are most suitable for centralized environments, and their convergence to the best-suitable solutions is slow. In addition, constituent parts of services often have predefined data dependencies and quality of service constraints, which further intensify the complexity of service offloading. To solve these issues, we propose a distributed DRL technique following the actor-critic architecture based on Asynchronous Proximal Policy Optimization (APPO) to achieve efficient and diverse distributed experience trajectory generation. Also, we employ PPO clipping and V-trace techniques for off-policy correction for faster convergence to the most suitable service offloading solutions. The results obtained demonstrate that our technique converges quickly, offers high scalability and adaptability, and outperforms its counterparts by improving the execution time of heterogeneous services.

Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) is a state-of-the-art machine learning model capable of generating human-like text through natural language processing (NLP). GPT is trained on massive amounts of text data and uses deep learning techniques to learn patterns and relationships within the data, enabling it to generate coherent and contextually appropriate text. This position paper proposes using GPT technology to generate new process models when/if needed. We introduce ProcessGPT as a new technology that has the potential to enhance decision-making in data-centric and knowledge-intensive processes. ProcessGPT can be designed by training a generative pre-trained transformer model on a large dataset of business process data. This model can then be fine-tuned on specific process domains and trained to generate process flows and make decisions based on context and user input. The model can be integrated with NLP and machine learning techniques to provide insights and recommendations for process improvement. Furthermore, the model can automate repetitive tasks and improve process efficiency while enabling knowledge workers to communicate analysis findings, support evidence, and make decisions. ProcessGPT can revolutionize business process management (BPM) by offering a powerful tool for process automation and improvement. Finally, we demonstrate how ProcessGPT can be a powerful tool for augmenting data engineers in maintaining data ecosystem processes within large bank organizations. Our scenario highlights the potential of this approach to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance the quality of business operations through the automation of data-centric and knowledge-intensive processes. These results underscore the promise of ProcessGPT as a transformative technology for organizations looking to improve their process workflows. © 2023 IEEE.

In today’s Function-as-a-Service offerings, a programmer is usually responsible for configuring function memory for its successful execution, which allocates proportional function resources such as CPU and network. However, right-sizing the function memory force developers to speculate performance and make ad-hoc configuration decisions. Recent research has highlighted that a function’s input characteristics, such as input size, type and number of inputs, significantly impact its resource demand, run-time performance and costs with fluctuating workloads. This correlation further makes memory configuration a non-trivial task. On that account, an input-aware function memory allocator not only improves developer productivity by completely hiding resource-related decisions but also drives an opportunity to reduce resource wastage and offer a finer-grained cost-optimised pricing scheme. Therefore, we present MemFigLess, a serverless solution that estimates the memory requirement of a serverless function with input-awareness. The framework executes function profiling in an offline stage and trains a multi-output Random Forest Regression model on the collected metrics to invoke input-aware optimal configurations. We evaluate our work with the state-of-the-art approaches on AWS Lambda service to find that MemFigLess is able to capture the input-aware resource relationships and allocate upto 82% less resources and save up to 87% run-time costs.

Microservice architectures are increasingly used to modularize IoT applications and deploy them in distributed and heterogeneous edge computing environments. Over time, these microservice-based IoT applications are susceptible to performance anomalies caused by resource hogging (e.g., CPU or memory), resource contention, etc., which can negatively impact their Quality of Service and violate their Service Level Agreements. Existing research on performance anomaly detection in edge computing environments is limited primarily due to the absence of publicly available edge performance anomaly datasets or due to the lack of accessibility of real edge setups to generate necessary data. To address this gap, we propose iAnomaly: a full-system emulator equipped with open-source tools and fully automated dataset generation capabilities to generate labeled normal and anomaly data based on user-defined configurations. We also release a performance anomaly dataset generated using iAnomaly, which captures performance data for several microservice-based IoT applications with heterogeneous QoS and resource requirements while introducing a variety of anomalies. This dataset effectively represents the characteristics found in real edge environments, and the anomalous data in the dataset adheres to the required standards of a high-quality performance anomaly dataset.
