Monitoring chloride levels in water is essential for environmental health, industrial processes, and safe drinking water, as both high and low concentrations can cause harm for living being. This paper presents a novel approach to detecting chloride concentrations using Open-Ended Coaxial Probe (OECP) sensing combined with machine learning algorithms. OECP sensing offers real-time, non-destructive, and precise monitoring, enabling early detection of contaminants. Scattering parameter (S11) data across a broad frequency range was collected with varying chloride concentrations in controlled laboratory experiments. Thirteen machine learning algorithms were trained to predict chloride concentrations, with different datasets for training and testing to ensure robustness. Among these, CatBoost demonstrated the best performance. After fine tuning and cross-validation, the CatBoost model achieved a test Mean Square Error (MSE) of 0.00627 and Coefficient of Determination (R2) of 0.9936, showcasing its accuracy for applications in water monitoring, corrosion prevention, and safeguarding public health. © 2025 IEEE.

High-resolution multispectral (HRMS) images combine spatial and spectral information originating from panchromatic (PAN) and reduced-resolution multispectral (LRMS) images. Pansharpening performs well and is widely used to obtain HRMS images. However, most pansharpening approaches determine the ratio of PAN and LRMS images through direct interpolation, which may introduce artifacts and distort the color of the fused results. To address this issue, an unsupervised progressive pansharpening framework, MSBANet, is proposed, which adopts a multistage fusion strategy. Each stage contains an attention interactive extraction module (AIEM) and a multiscale bilateral fusion module (MBFM). The AIEM extracts spatial and spectral features from input images and captures the correlations between features. The MBFM can efficiently integrate information from the AIEM and improve MSBANet context awareness. We design a hybrid loss function that enhances the ability of the fusion network to store spectral and texture details. In qualitative and quantitative experimental studies on four datasets, MSBANet outperformed state-of-the-art pansharpening techniques. The code will be released. © 2024 IEEE.

Blockchain technology has piqued the interest of businesses of all types, while consistently improving and adapting to business requirements. Several blockchain platforms have emerged, making it challenging to select a suitable one for a specific type of business. This paper presents a classification of over one hundred blockchain platforms. We develop smart contracts for detecting healthcare insurance frauds using the top two blockchain platforms selected based on our proposed decision-making map approach which selects the top suitable platforms for healthcare insurance frauds detection application. Our classification shows that the largest percentage of platforms can be used for all types of application domains, the second biggest percentage for financial services, and a small number is to develop applications in specific domains. Our decision-making map and performance evaluations reveal that Hyperledger Fabric surpassed Neo in all metrics for detecting healthcare insurance frauds.

Multi-party privacy-preserving decision tree training with a privileged party

Currently, a decision tree is the most commonly used data mining algorithm for classification tasks. While a significant number of studies have investigated privacy-preserving decision trees, the methods proposed in these studies often have shortcomings in terms of data privacy breach or efficiency. Additionally,these methods typically only apply to symmetric frameworks, which consist of two or more parties with equal privilege, and are not suitable for asymmetric scenarios where parties have unequal privilege. In this paper,we propose SecureCART, a three-party privacy-preserving decision tree training scheme with a privileged party. We adopt the existing pMPL framework and design novel secure interactive protocols for division,comparison, and asymmetric multiplication. Compared to similar schemes, our division protocol is 93.5–560.4× faster, with the communication overhead reduced by over 90%; further, our multiplication protocol is approximately 1.5× faster, with the communication overhead reduced by around 20%. Our comparison protocol based on function secret sharing maintains good performance when adapted to pMPL. Based on the proposed secure protocols, we implement SecureCART in C++ and analyze its performance using three real-world datasets in both LAN and WAN environments. he experimental results indicate that SecureCART is significantly faster than similar schemes proposed in past studies, and that the loss of accuracy while using SecureCART remains within an acceptable range.

Many machine learning models are susceptible to adversarial attacks, with decision-based black-box attacks representing the most critical threat in real-world applications. These attacks are extremely stealthy, generating adversarial examples using hard labels obtained from the target machine learning model. This is typically realized by optimizing perturbation directions, guided by decision boundaries identified through query-intensive exact search, significantly limiting the attack success rate. This paper introduces a novel approach using the Approximation Decision Boundary (ADB) to efficiently and accurately compare perturbation directions without precisely determining decision boundaries. The effectiveness of our ADB approach (ADBA) hinges on promptly identifying suitable ADB, ensuring reliable differentiation of all perturbation directions. For this purpose, we analyze the probability distribution of decision boundaries, confirming that using the distribution’s median value as ADB can effectively distinguish different perturbation directions, giving rise to the development of the ADBA-md algorithm. ADBA-md only requires four queries on average to differentiate any pair of perturbation directions, which is highly query-efficient. Extensive experiments on six well-known image classifiers clearly demonstrate the superiority of ADBA and ADBA-md over multiple state-of-the-art black-box attacks. Diabetes Mellitus has no permanent cure to date and is one of the leading causes of death globally. The alarming increase in diabetes calls for the need to take precautionary measures to avoid/predict the occurrence of diabetes. This paper proposes HealthEdge, a machine learning-based smart healthcare framework for type 2 diabetes prediction in an integrated IoT-edge-cloud computing system. Numerical experiments and comparative analysis were carried out between the two most used machine learning algorithms in the literature, Random Forest (RF) and Logistic Regression (LR), using two real-life diabetes datasets. The results show that RF predicts diabetes with 6% more accuracy on average compared to LR.

Information diffusion prediction (IDP) is a pivotal task for understanding the dynamics of information propagation within social networks. Conventional models typically adhere to a fixed learning-based paradigm, where the trained prediction model remains static during the inference phase. This paradigm presupposes that the data is independent and identically distributed, an assumption that may not hold true due to the inherently open nature of social media and the uncertainty and variability in user behavior. In this paper, we address the novel problem of out-of-distribution (OOD) shifts within IDP tasks and propose a new test-time training-based model for multi-scale IDP tasks, named Ghidorah. Our approach focuses on adapting a subset of model parameters to accommodate the unique characteristics of test samples through self-supervised learning (SSL) tasks. Ghidorah comprises three components: the macroscopic prediction branch, the microscopic prediction branch, and the auxiliary SSL branch. The auxiliary SSL task employs a masked autoencoder-based loss to fine-tune the model for specific test samples prior to prediction. Furthermore, Ghidorah integrates invariant learning to capture robust representations while mitigating spurious correlations. To our knowledge, Ghidorah is the first work to introduce a test-time training framework specifically designed to address the critical yet often overlooked OOD challenges in IDP tasks. Fact verification has become increasingly vital in the internet age, driven by the proliferation of false claims and political misinformation. While traditional methods rely predominantly on text-based evidence, multi-modal evidence introduces richer sources of information, offering valuable insights for claim verification. Existing multi-modal verification models often focus on superficial correlations between claims and evidence, neglecting the complex semantic interactions present in fine-grained multi-modal signals. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for multi-modal fact-checking, named Hypergraph Transformer-based Multimodal Fact-Checking (HGTMFC). Our approach captures high-order relationships between different modalities of evidence and claims by leveraging hypergraphs. HGTMFC models the intricate relationships among evidence across various modalities and enhances information propagation through a transformer-based mechanism embedded within the hypergraph. Moreover, we utilize linegraphs to refine this propagation process, further strengthening the model’s reasoning capabilities. Experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate that our model significantly outperforms existing approaches in multi-modal fact verification.
