Over centuries it has been common usage that the cooperation of foreman and assistant increases the working efficiency. This is due to the mutual understanding of each others actions and intentions. Hence, an important first step for automation in this field is to develop models of this natural and adaptive assistance. An artificial system equipped with such models would enable higher acceptance, passive safety and efficiency. Towards this goal we investigated the most common physical interaction occurring in human-robot cooperation - the handing over of items. In experiments, the timing and interplay of different modalities during a typical assembly task were analysed. A first model to predict timings and motor programs has been develop [1][2].

Internet services are now the major service platforms to provide services for all sectors of business and industries. To assure the correctness for concurrent data access, transaction-based Internet service is a well-accepted computation model. Because of the proliferation of networked devices and globalization, internet services can barely undertake any service interruption during any time of the day. Service interruption includes scheduled service upgrade, bug fixes, power outage, and service attacks. While considering the QoS (Quality of Service) for the transaction-based Internet service, service continuity is not negligible. However, transaction-base service model does not guarantee service continuity and could lessen the quality of service in many circum-stances. Although several service continuity technologies are developed, many of them focus on providing backup service when failure occurs and do not guarantee that the clients can continue their requested services step when the system is back to service. Existing technologies that support on-line service upgrade are usually too complicated to implement or have tremendous runtime overhead. In this paper, we describe the design, implementation and performance evaluation for service continuity technology to provide seamless online service upgrade for transaction-based Internet services. This approach requires minimal amount of code rewriting and has least overhead, comparing with existing approaches. We present the performance evaluation results and show that the overhead of our design is negligible.

Honeypots present networked computer systems with known security flaws to attackers and can serve to collect the executable code (malware) aiming to exploit the vulnerability. We describe and evaluate the proof-of-concept NetStage Architecture for a high-speed honeypot realized in reconfigurable logic. Dedicated hardware accelerators for the different network processing and detection layers allow the honeypot to operate at full speed of a 10 Gb/s connection and project the illusion of thousands of vulnerable systems at once. Furthermore, compromising the honeypot itself is significantly more difficult than in software honeypots, since all processing is handled by specialized hardware blocks instead of general purpose processors.

Routing is a general task, yet the implementation of routing protocols requires specific operating system related knowledge. The developer has to deal with particular kernel internals that might have severe side effects. This is especially true for reactive and hybrid protocols where routing and forwarding are heavily intermixed. Furthermore, novel routing protocols require features that are not provided by current operating systems or have to be customized. Thus routing protocols for mobile ad-hoc networks and wireless mesh networks are often studied in simulation environments. However, simulations have limitations that can result in conclusions that do not hold in real networks. A framework for the implementation of routing protocols in operating systems is required to enable real world oriented research. We introduce the DES Simple and Extensible Routing-Framework for Testbeds (DES-SERT). The framework supports the implementation and evaluation of routing protocols in a testbed environment. A structured protocol implementation is advocated by transmitting data in extensions attached to packets and by its pipeline based architecture. Several steps are elaborated how to derive an implementation from a routing protocol specification. ©2009 IEEE.

We investigate an abstraction method, called mean-field method, for the performance evaluation of dynamic networks with pairwise communication between nodes. It allows us to evaluate systems with very large numbers of nodes, that is, systems of a size where traditional performance evaluation methods fall short. While the mean-field analysis is well-established in epidemics and for chemical reaction systems, it is rarely used for communication networks because a mean-field model tends to abstract away the underlying topology. To represent topological information, however, we extend the mean-field analysis with the concept of classes of states. At the abstraction level of classes we define the network topology by means of connectivity between nodes. This enables us to encode physical node positions and model dynamic networks by allowing nodes to change their class membership whenever they make a local state transition. Based on these extensions, we derive and implement algorithms for automating a mean-field based performance evaluation.

Data collection using Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) is increasing in importance within the oceanographic research community. Contrary to traditional moored or static platforms, mobile sensors require intelligent planning strategies to maneuver through the ocean. However, the ability to navigate to high-value locations and collect data with specific scientific merit is worth the planning efforts. In this study, we examine the use of ocean model predictions to determine the locations to be visited by an AUV, and aid in planning the trajectory that the vehicle executes during the sampling mission. The objectives are: a) to provide near-real time, in situ measurements to a large-scale ocean model to increase the skill of future predictions, and b) to utilize ocean model predictions as a component in an end-to-end autonomous prediction and tasking system for aquatic, mobile sensor networks. We present an algorithm designed to generate paths for AUVs to track a dynamically evolving ocean feature utilizing ocean model predictions. This builds on previous work in this area by incorporating the predicted current velocities into the path planning to assist in solving the 3-D motion planning problem of steering an AUV between two selected locations. We present simulation results for tracking a fresh water plume by use of our algorithm. Additionally, we present experimental results from field trials that test the skill of the model used as well as the incorporation of the model predictions into an AUV trajectory planner. These results indicate a modest, but measurable, improvement in surfacing error when the model predictions are incorporated into the planner.

For preemptive scheduling,the discrete scheduling has the same capability as the continuous scheduling. However,most work previously done has been focused on the continuous scheduling. In this paper,a discrete analysis approach Empty Slots method is discussed and applied to fixed priority scheduling for constraint-deadline task model. Then a new schedulability test using the Empty-Slots method is presented. Compared with classical schedulability tests for continuous scheduling,this test is more convenient to be used and more efficient to tackle practical problems.

In this paper, we study the theory of collaborative upload bandwidth measurement in peer-to-peer environments. A host can use a bandwidth estimation probe to determine the bandwidth between itself and any other host in the system. The problem is that the result of such a measurement may not necessarily be the sender's upload bandwidth, since the most bandwidth restricted link on the path could also be the receiver's download bandwidth. In this paper, we formally define the bandwidth determination problem and devise efficient distributed algorithms. We consider two models, the free-departure and no-departure model, respectively, depending on whether hosts keep participating in the algorithm even after their bandwidth has been determined. We present lower bounds on the time-complexity of any collaborative bandwidth measurement algorithm in both models. We then show how, for realistic bandwidth distributions, the lower bounds can be overcome. Specifically, we present O(1) and O(log log n)-time algorithms for the two models. We corroborate these theoretical findings with practical measurements on a implementation on PlanetLab.

Solving the routing and wavelength assignment problem with a multilevel distributed memetic algorithm

The Routing and Wavelength Assignment problem is a graph optimization problem which deals with optical networks, where communication requests in a network have to be fulfilled. In this paper, we present a multilevel distributed memetic algorithm (ML-DMA) for the static RWA which finds provable optimal solutions for most benchmark instances with known lower bounds and is capable of handling large instances. Components of our ML-DMA include iterated local search, recombination, multilevel scaling, and a gossip-based distribution algorithm. Results demonstrated that our ML-DMA is among the most sophisticated heuristic RWA algorithms published so far. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.
