Cloud resource providers in a market face dynamic and unpredictable consumer behavior. The way, how prices are set in a dynamic environment, can influence the demand behavior of price sensitive customers. A cloud resource provider has to decide on how to allocate his scarce resources in order to maximize his profit. The application of bid price control for evaluating incoming service requests is a common approach for capacity control in network revenue management. In this paper we introduce a customized version of the concept of self-adjusting bid prices and apply it to the area of cloud computing. Furthermore, we perform a simulation in order to test the efficiency of the proposed model.

Manual reviews and inspections of software artefacts are time consuming and thus, automated analysis tools have been developed to support the quality assurance of software artefacts. Usually, software analysis tools are implemented for analysing only one specific language as target and for performing only one class of analyses. Furthermore, most software analysis tools support only common programming languages, but not those domain-specific languages that are used in a test process. As a solution, a framework for software analysis is presented that is based on a flexible, yet high-level facade layer that mediates between analysis rules and the underlying target software artefact; the analysis rules are specified using high-level XQuery expressions. Hence, further rules can be quickly added and new types of software artefacts can be analysed without needing to adapt the existing analysis rules. The applicability of this approach is demonstrated by examples from using this framework to calculate metrics and detect bad smells in Java source code, in UML models, and in test specifications written using the testing and test control notations (TTCN-3).

Wireless systems that form a body-area network must be made small and low power without sacrificing performance. To achieve high-throughput communication in low-cost wireless body area networks, we propose a low complexity,¿pulling¿ MAC protocol. Such a network architecture consists of low-complexity nodes and moderate complexity base stations, which act as clients to pull data from the nodes that act as thin servers. This organization achieves intra-network collision-free multiple access as in TDMA but without expensive time synchronization. It also achieves high utilization of air bandwidth and adaptivity of CSMA protocols but without collision or complexity on the node side. Experimental results show that our pulling protocol achieves better good channel utilization of up to 52.8% and high data throughput of up to 432 Kbps. We also tested our MAC protocol on a wireless ECG system. Our MAC protocol can transmit ten simultaneous streams of data at 200 samples per second each from ten sensing devices.

We describe a general purpose master-worker parallel computation Python module called PyMW. PyMW is intended to support rapid development, testing and deployment of large scale master-worker style computations on a desktop grid or volunteer computing environment. This module targets non-expert computer users by hiding complicated task submission and result retrieval procedures behind a simple interface. PyMW also provides a unified interface to multiple computing environments with easy extension to support additional environments. In this paper, we describe the internal structure and external interface to the PyMW module and its support for the Condor computing environment and the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) platform. We demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of PyMW by performing master-worker style computations on a desktop grid using Condor and a BOINC volunteer computing project.

The evolution of services market raises the need for automatic support for negotiating service use criteria. In order to reach an agreement, the negotiating parties need to develop a common understanding of the Quality of Service (QoS) terms which are part of the Service Level Agreement (SLA). The use of semantic annotations together with reasoning can increase the level of flexibility and automation in SLA management. In ubiquitous computing, dynamic adaptation and the evolvability of software become increasingly important. This paper proposes AOCI, an aspect-oriented component infrastructure that combines the core ideas of aspect-oriented programming (AOP) and component based systems. Components are usually considered as black boxes that can be combined to form complex systems. In the context of our infrastructure, components export possible points of adaptation, which are tagged with ontological information. This information enables the use of AOP techniques without detailed knowledge about the component's internals, enabling distributed and dynamic adaptation. Copyright 2008 ACM.
