At system level, the on-chip temperature depends both on power density and the thermal coupling with the neighboring regions. The problem of finding the right set of input power profile(s) for accurate temperature estimation has not been studied. Considering only average or peak power density may lead either to underestimation or overestimation of the thermal crisis, respectively. To provide more realistic temperature estimation, we propose to incorporate multiple power profiles. Using the proposed statistical methods to determine the closeness between the power profiles, we apply a clustering algorithm to identify few input power profiles. We incorporate them in a thermal-aware floorplanner and empirical results show that using the single input power profile (average or peak) leads to 37% degradation in critical wire delay and 20% degradation in wire length, compared to using the multiple input power profiles.

We present results of extensive experiments performed on nine data sets with numerical attributes using six promising discretization methods. For every method and every data set 30 experiments of ten-fold cross validation were conducted and then means and sample standard deviations were computed. Our results show that for a specific data set it is essential to choose an appropriate discretization method since performance of discretization methods differ significantly. However, in general, among all of these discretization methods there is no statistically significant worst or best method. Thus, in practice, for a given data set the best discretization method should be selected individually. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The fundamental paradigm of context-aware computing has lead to a diversity of conceivable context-based applications. In order to support these applications, efficient and scalable context management platforms have become utterly important. In this paper we propose a layered reference model that encapsulates suitable abstractions to tackle the complexity of context management in mobile ad-hoc networks. For each layer, we outline strategies and mechanisms we have developed to manage context information efficiently so that it can readily be used by context-based services and applications in these networks. In addition, we discuss refinements of the current model that we currently investigate, which are related to data semantics such as context quality and expressive location models, performance enhancement by adaptation, and aspects regarding the integration of ad-hoc context management with infrastructure- based systems leading to a hybrid system structure.

MCP is the chosen acronym for Mini-Car Pro - a wireless mobile robotic platform designed for research and education in embedded system development and wireless sensor network. The hardware architecture consists of a 200 MIPS ARM9 32-bit SoC, ultrasonic sensors, an IEEE 802.15.4 based Telos mote (a wireless sensor network node) for wireless communications, and a differential motor driven base platform with shaft mounted optical encoder for closed loop motion control. MCP is controlled remotely via a console software client running on a Windows based PC. Through the graphical user interface, the operator sends motion commands to and receives status from the MCP through a pair of Telos, one connecting to the PCpsilas USB port and the other to the MCPpsilas. One of the key features of the MCP is automated obstacle avoidance empowered by on-board ultrasonic detection of the surrounding environment. To achieve the goal of real-time system control, multi-thread software architecture is adopted, and along with a real-time Linux operating system framework. This paper describes the design of the MCP, and in particular highlights the real time software engineering development aspects which are generically applicable to similar mobile robotic platforms.

This paper has provided a first step towards solid theoretical foundations of large scale distributed systems. It has focused on applying complex systems theories SOC and HOT to data management solutions in P2P grids. It argues that replica management solution over OpenDHT, the state of the art DHT deployment, is based on SOC and consequently achieves robustness even in the presence of churn but not optimal performance.

Statistical anomaly detection (SAD) becomes an increasingly important tool for the early recognition of potential threats for security-relevant information systems. SAD systems heavily rely on the probing of potentially very large networks. Our contribution is an analysis of the resource requirements on the information sink which constitutes the bottleneck of Client/Server-based SAD systems. In order to dimension the system appropriately, we investigate the trade-off between accumulated and distributed arrival patterns, and the impact of the processing phase of the information sink.

Network operators gradually open their interfaces to formerly hidden services that foster the development of a new class of mobile applications which are operated by 3rd party providers and take into account context information such as the user's location. As a result, the inclusion of the network operators' infrastructure provides many new possibilities and the potential to change the way in which mobile devices are used in everyday life. However, this development raises important issues such as the protection of the users location information and privacy while using location-based services. In this paper we illustrate a service architecture together with a novel and flexible privacy enhancing mechanism that allows the realization of the highly postulated pay-as-you-go model for location-based services. We further specify mobile applications that operate on the exchange of location information even between different network operators while still meeting mandatory legal requirements.

Flooding is an elementary tool for information dissemination in a wide range of network scenarios, such as link state advertisements in wireless multi-hop networks and query propagation in peer-to-peer networks. Using random graph models, we compare two competing flooding techniques: multipoint relays and network coding. Our analytical results show that in the case of network coding, the number of transmissions per source message is asymptotically independent of the number of nodes. Simulation results yield further insights on the impact of topology on the performance of each flooding technique, more specifically on the required number of transmissions and the resulting end-to-end delay.

Home networks recently gain importance due to their development from pure internal networks in form of an Ethernet LAN to converged networks integrating home, Internet, and access provider infrastructure. In emerging future home networking scenarios, service provisioning and network management is proposed by distributed architectures forming virtual home environments (VHEs). This paper provides a service description and corresponding traffic and cost model for fair resource sharing in VHEs. The objective of the proposed cost model is to allow an evaluation of the contribution and consumption for each user participating in the VHE to find an economic balance in the distributed behavior. Hereby, the contribution counts positively and the consumption negatively. The economic balance controls the load balancing in the VHE and further limits the consumption of resources for users which over-pass a corresponding threshold of negative balance leading to an exclusion from the VHE, if the negative balance is not equilibrated over a mean- or long-time horizon.

This paper introduces a novel concept for automated navigation and control of a mobile platform. It utilizes an ad-hoc mobile wireless sensor network to provide navigational information to the mobile platform embedded control system. The embedded controller is realized with an ARM9 SOC based single board computer, with real time, multi-thread software implementation using a real time Linux operating system framework. We have repeatedly tested the automated navigation and control concept on a wheel based mobile platform in an indoor environment, and found the performance meeting our original design goals.
