Two smart-grid topologies are analyzed in this paper. The first one has two main differences from the traditional grid, a dc-bus and a smart integration module (SIM), which interconnects the dc- with the ac-bus. The second topology has only one difference from the traditional grid, a special control unit (SCU), which is attached to each device before connecting to the grid. The first topology has been implemented in a small-scale installation. This small-scale pilot installation is described and experimental results are presented. These results verify the predicted disadvantages of the first topology. It is expected that these disadvantages will be eliminated by using the second topology. This paper also presents the design of the second topology. © 2011 IEEE.

Transmission of multi-view video content is not practical in most mobile environments due to the limited bandwidth and processing power of mobile devices. To support such environments, one can limit the number of views that are being transmitted, known as Scalab.e Multi-view Video Coding (SMVC). In this paper, we propose a new view selection method for view scalab.lity in multi-view video coding in mobile environments, which uses inter and intra view dissimilarities to determine the most suitable views for the base layer corresponding to the prediction structure and user selected limited number of views. By selecting more correlated views for the base layer, the proposed method provides an improved performance, as confirmed by simulation results, even when all the enhancement layers are dropped due to network limitations.

Key frame extraction methods aim to obtain a set of frames that can efficiently represent and summarize video contents and be reused in many video retrieval-related applications. An effective set of key frames, viewed as a high-quality summary of the video, should include the major objects and events of the video, and contain little redundancy and overlapped content. In this paper, a new key frame extraction method is presented, which not only is based on the traditional idea of clustering in the feature extraction phase but also effectively reduces redundant frames using the integration of local and global information in videos. Experimental results on the TRECVid 2007 test video dataset have demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed key frame extraction method in terms of the compression rate and retrieval precision. © 2010 IEEE.

In the popular video coding trend, the encoder has the task to exploit both spatial and temporal redundancies present in the video sequence, which is a complex procedure;As a result almost all video encoders have five to ten times more complexity than their decoders. In a video compression process, one of the main tasks at the encoder side is motion estimation which is to extract the temporal correlation between frames. distributed video coding (DVC) proposed the idea that can lead to low complexity encoders and higher complexity decoders. DVC is a new paradigm in video compression based on the information theoretic ideas of Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv theorems. Wyner-Ziv coding is naturally robust against transmission errors and can be used for joint source and channel coding. Side Information is one of the key components of the Wyner-Ziv decoder. Better side information generation will result in better functionality of Wyner-Ziv coder. In this paper we proposed a new method that can generate side information with a better quality and thus better compression. We've used HVS (human visual system) based image quality metrics as our quality criterion. The motion estimation we've used in the decoder is modified due to these metrics such that we could obtain finer side information. The motion compensation is optimized for perceptual quality metrics and leads to better side information generation compared to conventional MSE (mean squared error) or SAD (sum of absolute difference) based motion compensation currently used in the literature. Better motion compensation means better compression. © 2010 IEEE.

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are attractive as a new communication paradigm. Ad hoc routing protocols for WMNs are classified into: (a) proactive, (b) reactive, and (c) hybrid approaches. In general, proactive routing is more suitable for a stationary network, while reactive routing is better for a mobile network with a high mobility. In many applications, a node in WMN is mobile but it can fluctuate between being mobile and being stationary. Therefore, a hybrid routing approach with the ability to adapt to node mobility could improve the performance of WMNs. In this paper, we propose a Mobility-aware Hybrid Routing (MHR) approach for WMNs, which varies its routing between reactive and proactive to adapt to node mobility. The MHR basically uses a reactive approach for route discovery, and as a proactive approach it maintains the route entry in the routing table unless the route fails due to node movement, even if the route is not used. In this paper, the MHR approach was applied to AODV, and herein called AODV-MHR. Its performance was compared with that of AODV and OLSR by simulation. The simulation results showed that AODVMHR could achieve the advantages of both reactive and proactive routing approaches in performance. © 2010 IEEE.

Increasingly, multimedia collections are associated with networked communities consisting of interconnected groups of users who create, annotate, browse, search, share, view, critique and remix collection content. Information arises within networked communities via connections among users and in the course of interactions between users and content. Community-derived information can be exploited to improve user access to multimedia. This paper provides a survey of techniques that make use of a combination of three information sources: community-contributed information (e.g., tags and ratings), network structure and techniques for multimedia content analysis. This triple synergy offers a wide range of opportunities for improving access to multimedia in networked communities. We focus our survey on three areas important for multimedia access: annotation, distribution and retrieval. The picture that emerges is promising: information derived from the social community is remarkably effective in improving access to multimedia content, and participation in networked communities has a high payoff. We present a new dataset, ideal for Head Pose and Eye Gaze Estimation algorithm testings. Our dataset was recorded using a monocular system, and no information regarding camera or environment parameters is offered, making the dataset ideal to be tested with algorithms that do not utilize such information and do not require any specific equipment in terms of hardware. Online games have been played mainly over wired networks due to high speed links and capable desktop computers. The advances in mobile devices and ever increasing wireless link bandwidth motivate us to study whether players can enjoy online gaming over broadband wireless networks such as mobile WiMAX networks. In this paper we carry out the World of Warcraft (WoW) measurements via the mobile WiMAX networks and analysis the performance. We focus on two aspects: (1) application level packet dynamics such as RTT and jitter;(2) WiMAX link level statistics such as wireless link quality and handovers. We measure various scenarios for comprehensive analysis of WoW traffic and WiMAX link-layer characteristics. Finally we discuss how to improve the service quality of WiMAX online gaming. ©2009 IEEE.
